It is with great sadness that I am even making this post, but considering the events of today, I feel I have no choice. Most of you are aware of the recent incident where a dog escaped our facility, was injured while on the loose, and ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
We have been in business for over 12 years and have never had a situation like this occur. I credit that to our clients’ humans who display a great level of communication with us. We board many dogs that are escape risks…that can jump fences…that can climb, etc, but it is always communicated to us in advance. (We have multiple rooms dedicated to “escape risk” dogs that we care for.) Communication did not happen in this situation. We were not made aware of pertinent information that could have prevented this tragedy from ever happening. The owners admitted to us that their dog was a “climber” after the fact, but did not tell us prior. Unfortunately, as expected, the blame is now being placed at our feet with threats of a lawsuit, etc being made. I have been sick to my stomach since the beginning of this incident. It is my worst nightmare come true. Most people get the love that we have for our clients and the pride that we take in our business. We are absolutely distraught over what has happened. This has affected us deeply also. I know not at the level of the pup’s family, but we are truly upset too. Especially since one sentence relayed to us could have prevented this chain of events. This post is not meant to disparage the owners of that dog as I understand they are grieving and everybody grieves in their own way, but I cannot sit back while we are publicly disparaged and threats are made towards my staff and business. I am very proud of my staff and the job that they do. I would be the first person to take action If I believed there was any negligence on our part. We cannot prevent what we are not aware of. So to our current clients that have done such a fantastic job of letting us know your fur babies quirks, etc, we appreciate it more than you know as it truly prevents things like this from happening. For those of you that may use us in the future or currently use us but have not shared information like this please know that sharing that kind of information with us does not mean that we are going to refuse your dog. It simply means that we will be able to better care for your dog and protect your dog while it is in our care if we are armed with the knowledge that we need to have. In 12 years, we have had a few times where information was not shared with us, from dogs being in end stage cancer to other things, but we just always were lucky enough that nothing bad happened. Unfortunately, that is now no longer the case. The worst happened. Please, please, please share information like this with us. We have never turned anyone away for being honest with us about an issue with their dog, regardless of what it is. We just go in to it eyes wide open, and taking all the measures we need to in order to ensure a safe and happy stay with us.
I want to finish this by saying that hindsight is 20/20. I feel for the family as they may simply have not thought to tell us. Unfortunately, it does not change the fact that this family lost their family member, and we are truly sorry for that. I wish more than anything that the events would have unfolded differently. We are heartbroken, and I know that what we feel must be miniscule compared to what the family is feeling. If I could change it, I would in a heartbeat.
