This Memorial Day, we honor all who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our country. There have been well over 600,000 fallen heroes since the First World War, according to government data.

Thousands of "four-legged fighters" have served alongside their human counterparts, and many have given their lives in the line of duty. More than 1,600 military working dogs currently help keep the nation safe.

The Human Animal Bond Research Institute - HABRI unleashed a wealth of insights at its 2024 Spring Policy Forum in Washington, DC. We were thrilled to be there!

A big thanks to President Steven Feldman and Events Executive Samantha Serrano for including WagWay executives Scott Buttz, Lisa Morrell and Sarah (Richmond) Mahoney in this important dialogue among top leaders in the pet care and mental health space. The annual forum promotes the understanding of the critical role that companion animals play in human emotional wellbeing.

Steven kicked it off with insights from HABRI's compelling research:

😄 87% of pet owners said their companions improve their mental state.
👨‍⚕️22% of pet owners had a pet recommended to help their health by a doctor or therapist.
🐶 Dog ownership was credited with reducing people's risk of death from all causes by 24%.

He shared a powerful message: "We need to stop thinking about pets as a 'nice to have' and start thinking about them as a public health strategy."

The forum was packed with perspective from researchers, human health practitioners, pet industry experts, and public policy leaders on ways to leverage the human-animal bond for better mental and public health outcomes. We're excited about the great connections and partnership opportunities.

This weekend's blowout Pup Festival showed the humanization of pets going full speed ahead. Just like the dog races there! Pet parents flocked to this event offering human-level services from nutrition to entertainment. Highlights included:

🐾 Artie Dog Meal System. This innovative freeze-dried food cup and appliance system allows for easy creation of home-cooked doggie meals and won the 2023 Purina Nestlé Pet Care Innovation award. Plus it has a slick branded van to showcase its wares.

🐾The Pets Table. It was inevitable - HelloFresh created this dog-food version of its popular people home delivery dining kits, bringing fresh and convenient canine meals to your doorstep.

🐾Dog versions of fun people activities: From psychic readings and dress-up portraits to caricatures and races, there was plenty to keep pet families enjoying time together and connecting with others.

We're kicking off National Volunteer Week with a salute to therapy and service dog teams! Getting certified at various levels is a long process requiring commitment, patience, and hard work on the part of the pet and the parent. Volunteering time and energy to those in need takes a special level of dedication and genuine care and concern for others.

Our CEO Scott Buttz's wife, Jennifer, and their English golden, Jessie, were a devoted volunteer team and community contributors for years with and in Maryland. Jessie’s gentle spirit touched countless lives, comforting children, college students, and the elderly, assisting individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities, and working with veterans. See some moments here from her heartwarming interactions with children in our community.

We celebrate the legacy of love, compassion, and caring of so many volunteer therapy and service teams in communities all across the nation.

👷‍♂️Last week, we traded our laptops for hard hats to tour our new Class A office space being constructed in the DMV area. Our leadership team took a break from our strategy working session one afternoon to visit the new office under construction. It's beams and drywall, but we were impressed by how fast it’s taking shape!

🏢 Set to open in June, WagWay Group headquarters will feature a state-of-the-art podcast and media studio, a teched-out digital analytics and strategy room, comfy team gathering areas, and a modern cafe. Plus lots of light-filled offices and workspaces from all those walls of windows.

One of our executives just took her Spaniel family members on weekend errands for quality mom-pup time.

They popped in to the pet store for a much-needed bag of food. One bag. "They" ended up browsing (aka snatching stuff off lower shelves).

The final haul was: A fox toy, an octopus toy, a double-wide teal orthopedic bed, collagen braided sticks, a pig's ear chew and a Nerf sports ball. Up went the basket size.

Recalled our WagWay infographic from earlier this week: Pet parents spend an average of $4,800 on their fur babies per year, according to MetLife.

That sounds low after just today's bill! How about you, pet parents? Is bringing your dog to the store a cart-boosting experience?
