A short clip from Saturday's session.

In the clip you will notice Sage stops a couple times while coming to me then offers a play bow. I don't step forward at any time. If I did Sage would have bolted and started the famous chase game every dog owner dreads.

Sage hasn't started the chase game and I don't want him too. So just remember, don't chase the dog, and always have the dog come to you! You are only making it worse and the dog thinks its a game.

Im pleased with Sage's performance today. He was more motivated. I've been struggling with him being semi motivated which gives "so so" results. He's learning and doing the commands but there's room for improvement.

I fixed it with play in the session. Normally, we play after sessions. Today, I played during it. At random times after Sage did a command or a series of commands I would throw a ball. The ball reward was the golden ticket. It even made him lay down quicker. Adding play directly in our sessions created more fun, motivation, enthusiasm, handler focus, and bonding.

He's a goof 🥰

Sage has been with us for a week! I have introduced all commands. Now I am fine tuning him. I still have a lot of ground to cover until he leaves Thanksgiving week. Next weekend his family will have their first training session to begin the transfer process.

It's a family business. Even the littles help with chores. Was he forced to help? No. This kid happily grabbed his shovel and ran to the yard to find piles of p**p. Those that don't know my son, he has a work ethic that would put some adults to shame.

Sage would like to file a complaint about having to do an extra training session right before bed. Sorry pal, but it had to be done. On the bright side this trainer won't loose sleep since he had a good session. Whoo-hoo! Long day with the puppy. I'll blame it on the nice weather. 🌞

Mr. Sage and I are working through some stubbornness. Since it's been cold I've done all but maybe 2 sessions outside. So he thinks the learning area is indoors and outdoors is for fun. I bet we did sit and down 100x outside then once inside ran through commands again to end on a high note. Training is consistency and repetition. You just have to be stubborn than a stubborn dog at times.

I am not a die hard couch privilege type of dog owner. Primarly because I don't like being smothered and I don't want to clean another surface regularly. When I do allow a dog on the furniture it's on the recliner.

When Sadie jumps up you will notice she quickly gets comfortable and doesn't smell or lick my face. She knows I hate that. That behavior is invading my personal space and I would ask her to get off.

My rules for couch privileges and I believe every house should have these rules as well.

💥 Calm behavior: the biggest, most important rule. There should be no reason why a dog is using the couch as a trampoline, bouncing from couch to couch, or walking on end tables.

Dogs should immediately be told to get off the furniture when these behaviors begin, even the slightest. Any sort of out of control arrousement means it's time for the dog to get off the furniture and settle elsewhere.

💥 Teach an on and off command: If you want to allow your dog on the furniture then it is wise to teach an off command. This is convenient and polite to have when guests are over. Remember, not all people enjoy dogs.

My rule is no dogs on the furniture, ever, when I have guests. I don't want it to be a habit for the dogs to see a new person then jump on the couch to say hi. My dogs are to sit in front of the person at the couch to be petted. I do have multiple people in my family that are scared of dogs, so this rule has to be firm at all times.

💥 Always invite your dog up: Remember, the couch is your space. If you get in the habit of inviting your dog then your dog will respect the space. If you allow them to jump up whenever then they will not respect the space as much. This is typically when the jumping and invading personal space begin.

💥 No dogs on the couch when people are eating!

Remember folks, dogs are a guest in your home. It's your home. Take pride in your dog's behavior, make rules and boundaries, and stick with them. Don't treat your home like a dog house. It's exhausting and frustrating.

A Little About Us

Our certified Master Trainer, Raven, offers all breed dog training. Services include: in-home training, private training, group classes, therapy dog training, service dog training, agility, tracking, and nose work classes. Raven obtained her basic/advance obedience, canine behavior, and kennel managment certification from Conifer Canine in Oct 2018. In Spring 2019 she returned to school to get her Master Trainer certification, areas of study include: decoy work, police k9, detection, trailing/tracking, search and rescue, and service dogs. Raven is also an AKC Evaluator, C.L.A.S.S Evaluator, and Therapy Pets Unlimited evaluator. She has several years experience training dogs and she is a K9 handler for the Vigo County Search and Rescue. Her K9 Athena, is nationally certified in human remains detection. Raven and her husband, Derek, co-handle K9 Medea who is in training for tracking and human remains detection.

On occasion we have German Shepherd puppies for sale. All breeding stock are health tested (DM, Hips, and Elbows). Puppies are raised around other dogs, cats, and children. They are temperament tested and will be placed in appropriate homes. They have began potty training and obedience training (sit and walking on leash) before going home. Pups are registered and come with a care package.

We have began helping our local shelters and rescue by offering free training services to prepare dogs for their future families. Dogs are taught how to heel, sit, down, stay, come, place, kennel manners, and door manners. This prepares them to take the AKC Canine Good Citizen test after they are adopted. We also work with shelter dogs that have behavioral problems. If you would like to donate to CARE Rescue or the Greene County Humane Society please contact them directly or us.
