You are always training your dog, even when you think you aren't. You are either training to better your dog or approving undesirable behaviors. Training is more than obedience.

Yesterday afternoon we were doing landscaping in the front yard. We live next to a busy road so it's important that my dogs listen to me in a moments notice and understand boundaries.

When working up front I wanted Sadie to follow me when I left an area but also lay down when we were working in one spot. This allowed me to keep an eye on her at all times without worrying where she was sniffing or if she was near the road. Pretty simple stuff.

Look at the difference in Delta!

Amazing what more one-on-one time, training, love, and adoption does to a dog. I was so happy to find out Delta was adopted. By who? His handler! She got a too attached during his program and decided to take him home.

The human has approximately 1 billion neurons in their brain while the canine has appoximately 500 million. Now let me explain why all of us in the dog industry become extremely agitated on a daily basis. This is a comparison of the two species and the silly expectations people place on canines.

1) Human- Given two plus years to accomplish potty training.
1) Canine- Human wants canine potty trainined in two weeks or they will have to rehome the dog....Please take the diaper off your eight month old human and let them crawl around your floor, lets just see the results....

2) Human- Gives human babies pain relievers and various numbing agents to help appease the pain of teething.
2) Canine- Demands Dog Trainer tells them how to reprimand their dog for chewing.

3) Human- Encourages young humans to run and play with endless forms of mental and physical stimulation.
3) Canine- β€œI have got to teach this dog to calm down!!!”

4) Human- Given 20 plus years to complete an education and become a productive member of society.
4) Canine- Expected to behave flawlessly after 6 weeks of training.

5) Human- Given sick and personal days from work and endless excuses for poor performance.
5) Canine- Expects to perfom perfectly 365 days a year with no questions asked. Canines are also not allowed to feel bad or forget.

6) Human- Expects a pay raise anually for the job they perform.
6) Canine- Humans demand their dog perform more every year and don’t believe they should reward the dog for the work they perform.

Dear human....If you don’t train, don’t complain!

Never be afraid to go back to the basics in anything you teach your dog--- from general obedience to competition sport work. If you aren't afraid to return to the basics, the foundation, then you will succeed.

Medea and I have returned to teaching impulse control with toys. She is my husband's dog, but I handle her most these days, and well I'm tired of having my hand inside her mouth. She is awful about rebiting toys, attempting to grab a toy if I grab it, or if I attempt to throw a toy she's trying to grab it. Medea is easy to over stimulate and she has no impulse control with toys. Right now she thinks when she sees a toy she can take it and play right then, even when I'm not ready.

How did I begin to fix the behavior and teach impulse control?

1) Have a plan before training: My goal for this session was for her to hold back her urge to grab a toy when I drop or toss a toy.

2) What equipment is needed? Gloves, 20ft long leash, prong collar, and a toy

3) What commands will be used? Leave it, No, Get it, Bring, and All done. My "all done" command is similar to a release command, but is only used in play. I'm telling my dog that we are done with the game.

Step 1) I began easy. I held the toy in front of her, telling her leave it. If she attempted to grab the toy she was given a verbal correction or leash correction, or both depending on the intensity. If she didn't go for the toy she was praised.

Step 2) I dropped the toy in front of her. Again, I told her leave it, went through the same corrections and praise as needed.

Step 3) Tossing the toy. Same commands, corrections, and praise as above.

Step 4) Once she began to focus more on me and not be consumed with the toy I gave the "get it" and "bring it" commands.

I spent probably 15 minutes doing these exercises at a slow, easy going pace. This pace helps her settle. The quicker I work, the quicker she escalates. We have lots of work to do, but we will get there.

Sadie started e collar training yesterday. I am fine tuning her obedience, making her recall more dependable (especially with the kids), and correcting unwanted behaviors at a distance. The unwanted behavior I am correcting is her herding instinct. Sadie nips my daughter's ankles when she runs and also shows the same behavior with my big dogs when they run. It's not often, but I still want to correct it before it progresses.

A couple quick facts about the e collar:

*The purpose is to not "fry" your dog.

*Find the dog's "just right" setting. This level is when the dog feels the static, but there is no pain involved. Used as a signal at this level. Sadie's level is 5 out of 127. That is low for my collar.

* Purchase a quality collar such as Dogtra or Mini Educator.

* Think of it as an insurance policy or back up plan!

I always say dogs thrive on rules and boundaries. They indeed do, but without clarity they will fail due to being confused. Dogs often fail because of us. Make sure to always set your dog(s) up for success. Guide your dogs. Praise more than punish. Teach through play. Motivate your dog, don't demand it.

Niko (Medea x Sir) is back home from training. Proud of Joni for taking Niko to training to improve both their lives. Off leash freedom is beneficial on so many levels!

Ultimate Canine evaluated a previous litter of mine. Happy to see they took on one of my "big pups" as well. ❀️

Place is one of the most used commands I use with my dogs. Place is simply an implied down stay on a bed or at a specific marked location.

When do I use place?

🐾 At meals, to prevent the dogs from being around the table.
🐾 To prevent door darting
🐾 When we have visitors, prevents crowding at the door and jumping
🐾 To create boundaries when needed
🐾 Used as a settle area
🐾 During cleaning
🐾 When we camp

A Little About Us

Our certified Master Trainer, Raven, offers all breed dog training. Services include: in-home training, private training, group classes, therapy dog training, service dog training, agility, tracking, and nose work classes. Raven obtained her basic/advance obedience, canine behavior, and kennel managment certification from Conifer Canine in Oct 2018. In Spring 2019 she returned to school to get her Master Trainer certification, areas of study include: decoy work, police k9, detection, trailing/tracking, search and rescue, and service dogs. Raven is also an AKC Evaluator, C.L.A.S.S Evaluator, and Therapy Pets Unlimited evaluator. She has several years experience training dogs and she is a K9 handler for the Vigo County Search and Rescue. Her K9 Athena, is nationally certified in human remains detection. Raven and her husband, Derek, co-handle K9 Medea who is in training for tracking and human remains detection.

On occasion we have German Shepherd puppies for sale. All breeding stock are health tested (DM, Hips, and Elbows). Puppies are raised around other dogs, cats, and children. They are temperament tested and will be placed in appropriate homes. They have began potty training and obedience training (sit and walking on leash) before going home. Pups are registered and come with a care package.

We have began helping our local shelters and rescue by offering free training services to prepare dogs for their future families. Dogs are taught how to heel, sit, down, stay, come, place, kennel manners, and door manners. This prepares them to take the AKC Canine Good Citizen test after they are adopted. We also work with shelter dogs that have behavioral problems. If you would like to donate to CARE Rescue or the Greene County Humane Society please contact them directly or us.
