Check out these tiny little guys who have been hanging out on our patients!

Ticks carry lots of zoonotic diseases, meaning we can catch those diseases from our furry companions!🏥
Remember to keep your cats and dogs up to date on their flea and tick prevention, some are so small we have to use the microscope to see them!

🦴Breed of the Week🦴

American Bulldog 🐶
Meet Roxie, a frequent flyer at AMC! She is an American Bulldog, a breed that was used for working cattle, hogs, and protecting property as early as the 1700s. They’re well known as family companions and are great with children. Being easy to train is one of many reasons bulldogs are still so popular today!

Pugs!
Meet Walter and Leonard! Pugs are one of the oldest dog breeds, originally bred in China to be a companion. Todays pugs carry on their ancestors’ job as wonderful companion pets. They’re loyal, friendly, and want nothing more than to be at their owners’ side. How could you say “no” to those wrinkly faces?! 🐶

Meet our new friend, Simon!
Last week, during play, Simon swallowed his ball! He bit off a little more than he could chew, and it got stuck in his throat! Luckily Dr. Worthen was able to extract the ball without surgery.

This is a great reminder for owners to select their dogs’ toys and treats carefully. Be sure to monitor their behavior with toys as this can happen to anyone! 🦴

Dachshund!

Meet Crosby, our favorite mini Dachshund! Crosby is owned by Kacie, AMC’s surgery technician! 🩺

Dachshunds come in two sizes, standard and miniature. They also have three coat types, smooth, wirehaired, and longhaired. Dachshunds were originally bred in Germany to hunt badgers!🦡 Now they’re well known as family pets. Did you know the first Olympic Mascot was a dachshund named Waldi!

Neapolitan Mastiff!

Meet Uhtred, one of our favorite mastiff patients! Neapolitan Mastiffs are an Italian working breed. They are wonderful guard dogs, being massive and powerful! Don’t let their appearance fool you though, because many of these dogs (like Uhtred) are as sweet as can be! 🩶

THANK YOU to EVERYONE in the community that came out for our community night hosted by Animal Medical Center of Litchfield! We were able to receive 361 pounds of dry food and 100 cans of wet food for the Benld Adopt-A-Pet through your donations!

We are so thankful and humbled by the generosity of our communities and our customers for making this event a success! We couldn't do it without all of you!

Smooth Collie!

Meet Elliot, one of the only smooth collies we see at Animal Medical Center! Smooth collies are a tall, hardy breed from Scotland. Originally bred for herding sheep, smooth collies are very intelligent and well-mannered.

Many people mix up smooth collies with their long-coated cousins, the rough collie, like Lassie!

Meet Knox and Mack, two of our favorite German Shepherd patients! German Shepherds are an intelligent, loyal, and brave breed. While they were originally breed for herding in Germany, they are now well known and trained for police work and guarding/bite-work around the world. Show us your German Shepherds in the comments!

It’s hot out! Here are some tips to keep yourself and your pets safe this summer!

DO
☀️ Stay hydrated
☀️ Take water on walks
☀️ Walk in the early morning or late evening
☀️ Stay in the A/C and shade when possible

DON’T
🚫 Walk on hot concrete/asphalt
🚫 Leave pets in the car
🚫 Leave your pet unattended in the water

Remember to keep a close eye on brachycephalic (short-nosed) dog breeds like bulldogs, boxers, and pugs, as well as Persian, Scottish Fold, and Himalayan cats. These breeds have more difficulty in the heat as they can’t breathe as efficiently as longer-nosed breeds.

Australian Shepherd!

Meet one of our Aussie patients, Slash!

Australian Shepherds are a breed that visit us often! They were originally bred for herding livestock, and most do their job well! They are incredibly intelligent dogs with the instinct to work. Not only are they amazing herding dogs, they are great family pets too! Agility is a popular sport among Aussie owners since these dogs are smart, athletic, and aim to please. Due to their nature, Aussies can get bored easily so needs lots of jobs to do! They also come in several coat colors including Black, Red, Blue Merle, and Red Merle.
