If you're planning to grow garlic you have a lot of options. The corms can be planted any time, and if you already had garlic (especially elephant garlic) there will probably be corms left in the soil from last year's harvest.

Late summer and fall are the best times to plant garlic and the leaves will appear with the colder weather, maturing in April and May for harvest. When you plant garlic in a spot give it some thought, because chances are you'll have garlic coming up every year from now on.

Elephant garlic is milder than some of the smaller versions, and is probably a cross between leeks and garlic. When harvested on time (before the cloves start separating from the bulb) they will store in a cool dry place (not the refrigerator) for a year or two.

If your lawn looks like this every summer, then consider switching to a creeping thyme lawn. A creeping thyme lawn is drought tolerant, it chokes out competing plants (w**ds) that would otherwise look unsightly, it can handle foot traffic, most varieties stay under 4" so it doesn't need mowing every weekend, it flowers profusely so is a boon for bees and other pollinators and it smells so much nicer than grass. People love to wax on poetically about the smell of freshly cut grass. But I’ll bet they’ve never walked across a sunbaked lawn of creeping thyme. If you're sold on the idea, then we've got a guide to replacing your grass lawn (even just a small section) with creeping thyme below...

After an hour of work yesterday my raised bed is ready for fall harvest sprouts 🌱

Total of 2 hours this week prepping for fall 😅 (seeding and raised bed).

Now back to just waiting around for summer harvesting and keeping the plants fertilized🥱

Over heard a young man, maybe 17, tell his buddy “whoa look at his grass!” ☺️

We personally wish the grass was food plants instead. One day….🥳

In the meantime, I planted seeds for fall harvest and I used my compost hay for them.

Am I the only one who enjoys catching them red-handed and then feeding them to the birds? ...

Texas heat is serious business, but my food plants seem to love it! 🌞 Growing longer and bushier every day during this bioengineered heatwave. 🌱 This is my strawberry, squash, cantaloupe, and watermelon bed. Using hay only as soil, it’s low maintenance and provides dinner and snacks for two 😋 Since April, all I’ve done is water and check for pests. Maybe a little clipping of damaged leaves, but no sweat here 👍🏽 I’ll be slowly piling hay sheets to fill in. Easygoing gardening! 👍🏽
