Marlee’s Triumph 🏆 Marlee’s Triumph 🏆 By now, many of you know that a big part of what ABTRR does involves rehabilitation. Whether it’s behavioral, medical, physical, or emotional, ABTRR prides itself on giving our special dogs 🐾 as much time ⏰ as they need to heal. You might also know that we have taken on dogs that don’t quite look like Bostons. 😉 Marlee is one such dog… Marlee is a 7 year-old white bully mix who was saved from a shelter in Western Louisiana in January 2017. Ninety minutes before she was slated to be killed, a rescue angel 😇 reached out with a Hail Mary plea for help. ABTRR answered the call ☎️ , and Marlee has been with us ever since. She was under a year old, emaciated, loaded with parasites 🐛, and pregnant to boot. She was beaten up and covered in wounds as a result of being housed in a kennel with five much larger dogs. We won’t go into detail, but suffice it to say this sweet little dog was starving bc the other dogs didn’t allow her to eat from the one bowl of food the “shelter” provided daily. Marlee demonstrated some pretty serious resource guarding behaviors that made adoption unlikely. Even now, she is fed separately from the rest of the gang. She hasn’t had to fight 👊🏻 for nourishment in years, but those scars run deep. Not much is known about the first several months 🗓 of her life, but six years later, we are seeing the results of her early trauma. Marlee’s foster family moved to a new home 🏡 recently. Soon after, she began displaying symptoms of a neurological issue. She began knuckling on her front limbs, which quickly progressed to weakness and stumbling. She saw her regular vet 🏥 for an exam and began seeing a veterinary chiropractor. Her initial exam results were unremarkable and didn’t tell us very much. We learned from our vet team that symptoms like Marlee’s usually come about as a result of a neck trauma, but there had been no known injury to speak of

That’s right - I made a friend out in West Texas with a big black Angus bull. I was hanging out with him this afternoon when off in the distance I saw a lady and two kids riding their horses. Holy cow!! Humans! I ran as fast as I could to them. This was my chance! I really needed food and water. Living on cow poop isn’t exactly the best nutrition, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I was super lucky to have run into this lady and her kids because she volunteers with American Boston Terrier Rescue & Rehab. She saw me and could see how desperate I was for some help. She picked me up and asked me how I had ended up way out there, 10 miles from the nearest town. I just shrugged my shoulders, and she lifted me up onto the saddle with her. I rode a mile down the road back to their barn. How cool is that? My freedom ride was on a horse! Not every dog can say that. This sweet lady called the rescue and sent them my handsome pictures. They saw how urgent my situation was and agreed to take me on even though I’m not a Boston. I got lucky twice today! She rushed me to the vet where I saw a doctor. The doctor said I was a young buck of just 2-3 months and that I needed subcutaneous fluids. I had some weird bubbles under my skin, but the sweet lady says they won’t be there long because my body will use those fluids to make me feel better. The sweet lady is feeding me small meals every couple

🐾❤️🐾 Eden Update🐾❤️🐾 Eden was released from the hospital today and went to her new foster home where she will continue to do physical therapy to strengthen her back legs. She is an absolute pro in her wheelchair. She has done this before. She is such a happy, energetic girl. She is just so sweet and well behaved. She knows how to “sit” and “wait”. Smart girl! She will make someone a very nice dog! We still need your help and support for Eden. Her vet bill for 3 weeks of hospitalization with intense physical therapy, and chiropractic care was $1600. She sprung from the shelter in the nick of time and transport her to safety. (Big thanks to the rescue angels who stepped up to help!) 🎉🎉North Texas Giving Day Spotlight🎉🎉 Meet Fiona! Fiona came into our program at just 24 hours old. She was born with Swimmer’s Syndrome (her back feet were turned backwards) and hydrocephalus (water on the brain). She also had growth retardation, and at 8 months of age she stopped growing altogether. Our veterinarians diagnosed her with dwarfism. She weighs 8 pounds and is the physical size of a 3-month old puppy. Her hydrocephalus is chronic. This isn’t something that can be cured. Our veterinarians took Xrays of her pelvis area and learned that she has a deformed sacrum as well. This is really important information. Part of the job of the sacrum is to efficiently pump the cerebral spinal fluid throughout her spine. Because her sacrum is deformed, it can’t pump correctly and this causes her spinal fluid to collect in the only space available, her brain. Think of a kinked water hose. The water has to back up somewhere. Chiropractic adjustments help to keep her deformed sacrum in alignment as much as possible so that it can work as efficiently as it can. Fiona requires weekly chiropractic adjustments to manage the symptoms of her hydrocephalus. This keeps her headaches away and keeps her feisty, bossy, and large and in charge! Turns out, Charlie had WAY more than a fractured back. He had road rash on his eyes that eventually blinded him, he had major trauma to his entire body that resulted in his skin opening up to drain the wounds under the surface, and he had a traumatic brain injury. His multiple injuries were so severe that he spent 3 months hospitalized with our veterinarian team. We spent over $10,000 for this specialized care. They addressed his physical wounds, his fractured spine, and the traumatic brain injury. We fundraised like crazy to cover his medical bills because Charlie was worth it - he was fighting hard to get better AND HE DID! Charlie is the sweetest dog out there! He can boogie on two legs and in his wheelchair. He’s always up for a snack and a head scratch. His favorite pastime is finding the softest, cushiest bed to sleep in and then finding some of the strangest positions to sleep in. Even though he is blind and a paraplegic, he has learned to go in and out of his foster homes doggie door. He is a smart and resilient dog!
