This is pretzel! πŸ‘‹ Pretzel came to AEC of NJ for laser surgery to help slow down the progression of iris hyperpigmentation in her right eye. We performed laser surgery to target those pigmented cells, and hopefully prevent this pigmentation from developing into iris melanoma.

This is Pee-wee. He has cataracts in both eyes, however, after we performed our ocular ultrasound and electroretinogram, we found that that he would not have vision if we pursued surgery in the right eye. The owner elected to only do surgery in his left eye and he did great!

We are pleased to introduce our intern, Dr. Sidney Ryan to The Animal Eye Center of NJ Team!

Dr. Ryan is originally from Tucson, Arizona, and attended the University of Washington in Seattle for her undergraduate studies. She then moved to Pennsylvania, where she completed veterinary school in 2023. Following graduation, she moved to Boston where she completed a rotating internship at the Angell Animal Medical Center.

Outside of work, Dr. Ryan enjoys hiking and camping. Her favorite hobbies include reading and arts and crafts, but when dragged out of the house you can find her with friends at local breweries. She currently does not have any pets but is looking to adopt a dog.

Dr. Ryan’s favorite thing about the specialty is how ophthalmologic care can improve pets' overall quality of life by helping maintain vision and focusing on alleviating pain. In addition, she really values how special the eye is and how much you can tell about the systemic well-being of an animal from its eyes.

Please help us give her a warm welcome!

This is baby Zulu. Zulu has entropion, a condition in which your eyelid turns inward so that your eyelashes and skin rub against the eye surface. Zulu still a lot of growing to do, so we placed surgical staples in the lower eyelids to stop her eyelids from turning in and causing irritation.

This is only a temporary fix while Zulu is growing and she may need surgery in the future. For now she is doing great!

Each year, the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) hosts a national service animal eye exam event that provides free, ocular screening eye exams to qualified Service & Working Animals.

The event takes place each May and exams are provided by those members of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists who choose to participate and volunteer their time and resources.

We're pleased to share that Dr. Holmberg has participated again this year! We are grateful to have helped so many trained working animals this month who selflessly care for us all.

This gentle sweet giant is Thor. Thor came to AEC to help manage his glaucoma. He had one eye removed, and then the other after the glaucoma became uncontrolled and painful. Buckey came to AEC of NJ for an Enucleation, or eye removal procedure of the left eye. There are many reasons for a pet to need an eye removed. In Buckey's case, he had a large mass growing behind the eye causing it to become exophthalmic or protruding out of the socket. As you can imagine, this can be very painful and uncomfortable for the pet, so removal of the eye and mass is the recommended option.

Benji, a one-year-old Shar Pei mix came in for a lower lid entropion procedure for both eyes. Entropion is the inward rolling of the eyelid which is very common in Shar Pei's as they often have excess rolls or eyelid length. This procedure should reduce irritation and future scarring of the cornea. πŸ‘

Sonny, a nine-year-old Labrador Retriever came in for a Mass Debulk/ Cryosurgery for two masses on his right eyelids. Some eyelid tumors/masses are not bothersome, while others may rub against and irritate the surface of the eye, or even obstruct vision. In Sonny's case, his lower eyelid mass did touch the ocular surface and was next to the opening of the tear duct, which is cause for removal.
