In honor of our observation of Global Tiger Day on July 29, we hope you'll join us in celebrating and raising awareness of this iconic endangered species.

By protecting tigers, we safeguard the health and biodiversity of entire landscapes. The Little Rock Zoo is home to three Malayan tiger girls - Kae, Zoya, and Sundari. The girls were born on August 13, 2022, and are genetically valuable members of their species. Malayan tigers are critically endangered with only about 250 remaining in the wild.

Stop by the Zoo on Monday, July 29 to learn more about our tigers and how you can support tiger conservation!

The Little Rock Zoo collected a total of 33,090 gently used and unused eclipse glasses after the total solar eclipse in April! Members of the Zoo’s teen volunteer program spent a total of 36 hours sorting, counting, and packing up the glasses to be sent to other locations through our partnership with Astronomers Without Borders. Thank you in particular to Madison and Isabella, who did the bulk of the work.

We received donations of glasses from all over Arkansas, but from all over the country as well, including Arizona, Montana, Oklahoma, Florida, New York, and Maryland. Along with the glasses that can be reused, we were also able to recycle 1,315 eclipse glasses. Thanks to everyone who celebrated the eclipse with us and continued to celebrate our world by donating glasses to the Zoo for this project. We were thrilled with the response to this program and proud of our community for your interest in keeping resources out of the landfill.

The Little Rock Zoo is proud to be a part of the Adopt-A-Street program. In 2023, we officially adopted Zoo Drive, the street that runs in front of the Zoo, though our custodial staff has been keeping it clean for years. Now, the Zoo’s Green Team and staff come together every other month to complete a cleanup of the street and parking lot. We are proud to be good stewards of our neighborhood and city by keeping trash off of our grounds and out of our waterways.

Here, Assistant registrar Mo and Summer research intern Erin show off their safety vests and garbage pickers during June’s cleanup while highlighting our new sign!

Happy World Snake Day! 🐍

Snakes play a critical role in maintaining ecological balance, and we can help to ensure their continued existence and well-being. Snakes, as integral components of ecosystems, help control pest populations, contributing to a balanced and healthy environment. Snakes are ecosystem engineers, creating and modifying habitats as they move through the terrain and disperse seeds eaten by their prey. Their presence is a sign of a thriving and diverse ecosystem.

How can we contribute to snake conservation?
Habitat Preservation: Support conservation initiatives that focus on preserving and restoring natural habitats, ensuring snakes have the spaces they need to thrive. sponsored by the Little Rock Zoo, to help keep urban snake habitats healthy.

•Education and Awareness: Attend educational programs, events (like World Snake Day), and exhibits to learn more about snake species and conservation efforts.

•Responsible Wildlife Encounters: If you encounter a snake in the wild, observe from a safe distance. Respecting their space is crucial for both their safety and ours. In Arkansas, it is illegal to kill a snake unless it poses a direct threat to you.

•Support Conservation Organizations: Contribute to reputable conservation organizations dedicated to snake conservation. A portion of your admission and parking fee is dedicated to conservation groups that the Zoo is partnered with.

•Responsible Breeding Programs: AZA-accredited zoos are permitted to engage in responsible breeding programs to maintain healthy populations for certain species. One such program is the SSP, or Species Survival Plan, which helps to ensure the survival of select species which are either threatened or endangered in the wild.

The celebration is included in the price of your admission. Come join us for an educational and fun-filled day celebrating the wonderful world of snakes!

Did you know that snakes don't use their teeth to chew? Or that Iceland, Ireland, Greenland, Newfoundland, and Antarctica are all too cold for snakes? Fascinatingly, snakes can eat things that are 75-100% their own size!

Did you know that African Penguins go through a "catastrophic molt" once a year? 🐧

Unlike flighted birds that molt slowly to keep flying, African Penguins lose all their feathers at once and replace them with new ones. This quick process, usually taking 3-4 weeks in the spring, allows them to get back in the water and catch fish faster!

In true Zoo fashion, we love to have friendly competitions. This year we decided to watch our penguins from their premolt to their biggest phase before molting.

Who do you think weighed the most? Cast your vote by liking the penguin’s photo you think was the heaviest - see photos in the comment section below!

Then keep watching our page for when we share the final results in a couple weeks!

BABY UPDATE!
Pumpkin and Curry, the pygmy slow loris babies, have grown by leaps and bounds! At nearly 7 months, they are exhibiting individual personalities. Pumpkin is significantly larger than his brother, Curry. Curry is the more outgoing and adventurous of the two. Curry enjoys eating crickets, while Pumpkin is still not too sure they are actually a delicacy. Both visit their Dad, Frasier, at their shared mesh wall. They still live with Mom, Mihn Yih, and all still enjoy each other's company.
