Do you consider yourself nocturnal? If so, you’ve got something in common with some of the coolest animals at the Zoo! Unlike their daytime friends, nocturnal primates like the Pygmy Slow Loris are built for the night. With large, light-sensitive eyes, these amazing creatures can see in the dark, and their sharp senses of hearing and smell help them thrive when the sun goes down.

Extra fun fact: Pygmy Slow Loris fur acquires silver tips or “frosting” and their lighter markings become more prominent in the winter. This is thought to aid in camouflage during the colder months.

On October 30, 2024, we welcomed a new addition to the Angolan Colobus troop! This is Thumbelina and Azizi's 2nd offspring. Baby is alert and very strong and is already watching older brother, Ngumu (Ngumu is Thumbelina and Azizi's first child and is a year-and-a- half old). Ngumu has checked out his new sibling, gently touching them. In a few month's time, the two will be running around and playing together. Thumbelina and baby are keeping the gender under wraps at this point. Hopefully, we will know soon!

Have you met our newest Zoo family member, Riana the Fossa, yet?

Riana is a fossa, a unique carnivore native to the island of Madagascar. Resembling a blend of cat and mongoose, fossas are the largest predator on the island and play a crucial role in regulating the ecosystem by controlling populations of smaller animals. Despite their cat-like appearance, fossas are actually more closely related to mongooses.

Fun facts:
•Pound-for-pound, the fossa is one of the most formidable hunters on the planet.
•It is acrobatic, agile and relentless in its pursuit of lemurs. They possess a set of long, lean forearms that are coupled with some truly gnarly claws and a fearsome set of teeth.
•A relative of the mongoose, the fossa is unique to the forests of Madagascar, an African island in the Indian Ocean.
•Growing up to 6 feet long from nose to tail tip, and weighing up to 26 pounds, the fossa is a slender-bodied catlike creature with little resemblance to its mongoose cousins.

🐧Did you know African Penguins are true deep-sea divers that can hold their breath for over 2 minutes and plunge to depths of 400+ feet!? Or that this specific species of penguins prefer warm weather—African penguins live at the southern tip of Africa, soaking up the sun.

Learn more interesting facts about our penguin colony during your next visit to the Zoo! Watch their daily feedings twice a day at 9:30AM and 3:30AM.

It’s hot out there! Even our Cape Crested Porcupines, Indigo and Iris, are finding ways to beat the heat with some refreshing ice. 🌞 Here are some tips on how to stay cool during your Zoo summer visits: 1) Stay Hydrated: Remember to take breaks and drink plenty of water. Bring a reusable water bottle; we have several refill stations throughout the Zoo to help you stay refreshed. 2) Cool Down Spots: Take advantage of our mister stations to beat the heat. You can also cool off in the Reptile House, Cheetah Outpost, and Café Africa, which are perfect for a break from the sun. 3) Animal Habitats: Animals have access to both their indoor and outdoor areas, which means during times of excessive heat, they may access cooler areas that are out of view. BABY UPDATE! Baby Kota is starting to show interest in solid foods like corn. While he will continue to nurse for a few years, mom (Berani) is letting him start to bite on a few things as his teeth are slowly coming in.
