Through the Humane Society of Dillon Countys alliance with the Humane Society of South Carolina and the Humane Society of the United States, they have been able to arrange a massive pet food give-a-way through the help of Chewy.com.

Chewy.com is an international business which distributes a wide variety of pet products. Chewy.com acknowledges that feeding pets gets very expensive, and that oftentimes owners must make the difficult choice of relinquishing ownership to the County Shelter. Hopefully, this donation of Chewy pet products will alleviate this problem, at least temporarily.

A distribution of pet food will be held on Thursday, June 27, 2024, at the City of Dillon Sports Complex located at 1201 SC-34 in Dillon SC. The time of distribution will begin at 4:00pm and will continue while supplies last. THIS IS A DRIVE THROUGH EVENT ONLY - PLEASE REMAIN IN YOUR VEHICLE. ONE BAG OF DOG FOOD AND/OR ONE BAG OF CAT FOOD PER CAR. WET AND DRY FOOD WILL BE AVALIABLE.

Update!! Minerva was sent to a medical foster home on Monday!! Please continue to send positive thoughts and prayers. She is doing well so far!!

Meet Minerva. Minerva is currently at Valley Veterinary Emergency & Referral Center . The owner reached out when she discovered that the kitten had spent the night inside the toilet with the lid closed. She brought her in immediately when she found her and reached out. This was truly an accident. The young woman was helping a mom cat babies and is getting the mom spayed. We will provide lists of resources. She is learning about cats and is wanting to learn. We will be staying in touch with her and she has a volunteer phone number. Minerva will be a Dakota's Dream kitty. She will need extensive care and the vet has said she has about a 50/50 chance. Minerva is being admitted on oxygen. She cannot regulate her temperature, she has aspiration pneumonia and possibly some head trauma. She is critical. Please send some prayers for Minerva and to the young woman we thank you for reaching out.

Meet Ruby, a poor girl with a lot of recent bad luck. Obviously a stray who has been on her own for most of her young life, she was hit by a car Monday and left to suffer and die on the scalding highway. Luckily a Good Samaritan called and Randy got her to The Dillon County Animal Shelter and then to our vet. She has had an amputation, but she is doing great. Now she needs a safe place to recuperate while I search for a rescue or adopter for her. Is there anyone willing to give her a comfy, quiet spot to heal? The Humane Society of Dillon County is paying her vet bill and we will provide meds, food, whatever she needs to the short-term foster. PLEASE SHARE to help poor Ruby.

Great news! Patches and Calico and their sweet babies have rescue. But they need a ride to Rocky Mount, NC tomorrow. The rescue will meet you at the Cracker Barrel in Rocky Mount. The great thing about transporting kitties is that you don’t have to stop and walk them! Can someone help these anxious Mamas get their babies to a safe haven?

We are now able to reinstate our Spay/Neuter program for pet owners who meet low-income guidelines. However, our vet prices have doubled, and we are going to be extremely diligent in only writing vouchers for pet owners who meet low-income guidelines. Proof of low-income will be required for vouchers to be granted. Social Security alone will not be a qualifier. All applications must be made at the Dillon County Animal Shelter, and old vouchers are not valid.

We need to inform the citizens of Dillon County, SC, that we are suspending our low-income Spay/Neuter program for several weeks. We have encountered problems in identifying viable guidelines for qualifying for this program, and it has created difficulties. If you have suggestions, or if you are in an area where a program of this type is being run smoothly, please send me your information, preferably in Messenger.

The Dillon County Animal Shelter and the Humane Society of Dillon County, Dillon, SC, are gearing up for a Christmas Adoptathon for our Shelter cats and dogs, but we need a Christmas tree for our promotion. Do you perhaps have a tree that you’re no longer using that you would be willing to donate to the Shelter? It doesn’t need to be big or fancy or new! But it just might get the attention in photographs that could lead to a cat or dog’s adoption.

I fell in love with Stella at the Dillon Shelter this week. She is an owner surrender who obviously has been well-loved, docile, calm, and fond of ear rubs. How sad it is that she is now alone, frightened, and confused in a cold concrete cell. When we finished photographing her, she clung to my arms and looked at me with those sad, dark eyes. She is about 6 months old, about 25 pounds and not likely to get much bigger. Heartworm status unknown, but this young, she is highly treatable if positive. Please, someone consider adopting this sweet girl! Our rescue friends are all full, and we need the community’s support to get our Dillon Shelter dogs home by Christmas.

Such a great project! Thank you!

UPDATE: Winter is safe and secure with a wonderful foster, and she has a great adopter in her future!

An emergency situation has develped around this poor girl, completely unrelated to her or her situation, but she desperately needs a safe haven for about two weeks. Does anyone have a fenced-in back yard where she could just visit for about two weeks. We will provide food, bowls, treats, a house if necessary. We also have a volunteer who will visit and walk her. The volunteer has a reactive dog, and she can’t put poor little Winter in that situation. The Shelter is packed full, and we are anxious to get Winter into a safe, very temporary place.

We took eight little kittens to Rocky Mount, NC to meet Ellee of Purring Hearts VA. Carter, the little fellow I’m holding, has something awful going on with his eyes, but hopefully Purring Hearts VA vets can save his sight. These are mighty lucky kitties to be going to a great rescue, but there are so many, many more needy, homeless cats and dogs in Dillon County. The founding purpose of the Humane Society was to establish a spay/neuter program for pet owners who otherwise could not afford the procedure. It still is our main purpose. We simply can’t rescue or adopt our way out of the over-population crisis! Applications for vouchers are available at the Dillon County Animal Shelter, Dillon, SC. Please, please spay/neuter your pets!

Update: We received a donation of 5 heavy plastic barrels, washed out and aired out, from the Waste Water Department of the City of Bennettsville, thanks to the kindness of Jennifer McColl Reingardt and Michael Leggett. We purchased cedar shavings for the barrels, and at least these dogs will be safe during the coming cold weather. Thank you to everyone who was concerned and offered help and advice.

We have a problem with 5 dogs on chains within the city limits of Dillon. The Humane Society bought dog houses for them, but they have torn them up. These are large dogs, and putting expensive igloo-type houses there would be futile. They would be quickly stolen. Does anyone have access to sturdy, preferably metal barrels that you would be willing to donate to these poor dogs? We would put hay in them. For the record, we are very opposed to chained dogs, but we are trying to at least keep these poor dogs warm.

We are desperately looking for a nursing mama cat who might be willing to accept these poor little orphaned babies. The owners have been trying to bottle-feed them with very little success. They are in the Mt. Calvary, Dillon County, SC area, but we would get them to you. Also, you would not be stuck with 4 kittens after they are weaned. Perhaps there is an experienced kitten saver willing to take on a challenge. . . Call me at 843 487-7592 or use this post or Messenger to respond.
