June 2024, I got an email. It was from a local family who was looking for help.
For them, this problem started with two rabbits...then a 3rd, then a few oops litters. By the time they reached out to me...they had over 30 rabbits in the basement of their rental.
The smell, lack of proper caging, overcrowded room, and shear number of rabbits had led to an eviction notice. They had a few small cages and a x-pen or two. I was told they would put everyone away at night and when they would wake up in the morning, all of the rabbits would have pushed/jumped over and out of their respective spaces. Which means that they were fighting and breeding uncontrollably.
The morning these rabbits were brought to me- I was told they ran out of food and gave them blueberries and bananas for breakfast. It was hot, they were hungry and I really thought we were going to lose some just to bloat, enteritis or GI stasis. But thankfully everyone was rehomed quickly and I was not made aware of any losses.
I know this family was doing the best that they could- and ultimately the right thing by handing over all of their rabbits to me. But, the condition that most of these rabbits showed up in was absolutely heartbreaking.
Pancake was by far the worse of everyone. He had holes in his back and neck straight down to the muscle. He had to be housed indoors because i was so worried about fly strike. Once we got all of his physical wounds to heal, we decided Pancake would NEVER have to wonder about his safety ever again.
It's astounding how forgiving and gracious this rabbit is. He had every right to be fearful of everything around him. But, he has honestly turned out to be the most confident and resilient little rabbit we have ever had.
Now he gets to live out his best life with us being an absolutely spoiled house bunny. π₯°
