TIPS TO KEEP YOUR PETS SAFE DURING FIREWORKS!
Keep pets indoors: Ensure all windows and doors are closed.

Update identification: Make sure your pet’s is wearing a collar and their tags have up-to-date information. Register their microchip with correct address & phone number.

Muffle loud noises: Close windows and turn on the TV, radio, fans, or air conditioners.

Provide distractions: Keep toys and long-lasting treats (like stuffed Kong’s) available in their safe space (crate, bedroom, etc.).

Early exercise: Potty and exercise your pets on a leash early in the day when fireworks are less likely.

Use secure collars: Consider a martingale-style collar and slip leash to prevent your dog from panicking and slipping out of their collar if fireworks go off.

-Lethargy or weakness

The next few days are going to be hot, hot, hot! ☀️

Please think about some of these summer safety tips when trying to stay cool with your pet:

• Make sure your pet has access to plenty of fresh water throughout the day. 🚰
• Limit outdoor time when the temperature peaks or especially midday when the sun is at is highest. If you have a higher energy pet, try moving play time/walks to earlier in the morning or later in the evening. 🌡️
• Provide more shelter or shaded areas outside for them to relax in, (or simply keep them inside in the AC with you). ⛱️
• DO NOT LEAVE THEM IN YOUR CAR WHILE RUNNING ERRANDS. 🚫
• Invest in a good, old kiddie pool or sprinkler for some summer time fun. 💦
• Remember, if the pavement is too hot for your bare feet, it is too hot for theirs! 🐾

If your pet is showing signs of potential heat stroke such as collapse, weakness, excessive panting, drooling or other signs of distress, please contact us at 603-870-9770 or your veterinarian immediately.

We would like to let everyone know that we have seen a recent increase in Rabies cases in wildlife in our area. We have had two racoons brought to our facility recently that had porcupine quills that both tested positive. If you find injured wildlife the best course of action would be to contact fish and game or your local animal control officer for assistance or guidance on how to safely proceed.

Today is national corn on the cob day!

We want to use this day to bring attention to important information when it comes to corn on the cob and your pets.

It's that time of year when cookouts are in full swing which is always a lot of fun. Let's keep them fun by not involving a trip to the vet with a corn cob ingestion.
More often than not, ingestion of a corn cob, even just pieces of it, WILL lead to an intestinal blockage. This intestinal blockage may then mean your pet ends up needing an endoscopy (depending on timeline and size of the pieces) or surgery for removal.
While your pet may enjoy the taste of corn itself, please remember to be safe and cut the corn off before feeding to your pet. Make sure all trash is out of their reach and inaccessible to them.

If you believe, or have seen your pet ingest a corn cob, please contact your veterinarian or us immediately. Please don’t wait to see if it will pass, because it won’t, and once it leaves the stomach it starts to damage the intestines and becomes more difficult to remove.
If your pet begins to show signs of discomfort, lack of appetite or vomiting and diarrhea, please contact your veterinarian.

Enjoy your corn responsibly! 🌽

🌞 **Heat Stroke and Exhaustion in Pets: What You Need to Know** 🌞

As a follow up to our post about heat stroke last week, we wanted to touch on the topic again as the temperatures rise.

It's crucial to protect our furry friends from heat stroke and exhaustion. Here are some important tips to keep your pets safe:

❗ Brachycephalic dogs are at the highest risk!
❗These breeds include French Bulldogs, Pugs, Shih Tzus, American Bulldogs, Bulldogs, and Boston Terriers.
❗They struggle to cool themselves (thermoregulate) like other dog breeds.
❗ DO NOT expose your brachycephalic dog to heat, EVER.

💦 Swimming Dogs:
✔️ Dogs swimming and exercising in bodies of water can get heat stroke.
✔️Even though they are wet, they can overheat if they don't take breaks and rest in the shade.

⛰️ Hiking Dogs:
✔️Dogs hiking in the shade can still get heat stroke.
✔️Take regular water breaks and rest periods while hiking.

😎 Dogs Resting Outside:
✔️Dogs resting in the sunshine, even if not exercising, can get heat stroke.
✔️Limit their time outside and monitor how long they have been exposed to the sun.

😓 Signs of Heat Stress:
✔️Excessive panting (smiling)
✔️Seeking shade
✔️Slower to return toys (still wants to play but takes longer to bring a toy back or drop it)

🚨 If your pet shows any signs of heat stress, stop all activity and cool them down immediately.

You can do this in the following ways:

✔️Using cool towels: while still being exposed to the air and not draped in towel
✔️Hosing them off
✔️Using a spray bottle
🚨You are going for evaporative cooling.
🚨Do not put them in an ice bath or soak them in water.
🚨They should only be cooled down to about 103 degrees, not lower.

🚨They tend to get VERY cold if they are overzealously cooled or too rapidly cooled. 🚨

Stay safe this spring and summer and keep a close eye on your pets' well-being. If you have any concerns, don't hesitate to contact us at Port City Veterinary Referral Hospital.

Keep cool and stay safe! 🐾

When the weather warms up, it's crucial to remember the dangers of leaving pets in hot cars. Here are some key points to keep in mind:

- Never leave your pet unattended in a vehicle, even for a few minutes.

- Cars can heat up quickly, reaching temperatures over 100°F (38°C) in just 10 minutes.

- This can cause heatstroke, organ damage, and even death.

- If you see a pet in a hot car, call 911 or local animal control for assistance.

- If you're traveling with your pet, consider these tips:

- Bring a cooler with water and snacks.
- Plan regular breaks in shaded areas.
- Avoid traveling during the hottest part of
the day (11am-3pm).

Remember, always prioritize your pet's safety and well-being!

A cyanobacteria ALERT has been issued for Partridge Lake, Littleton by the NH Department of Environmental Services. Cyanobacteria activity was first observed on 2 May 2024, appearing as green flecks accumulating along the surface lakewide. See the image attached, taken 2 May 2024.

Samples collected and reviewed on 2 May 2024 had cyanobacteria (Aphanizomenon) in concentrations up to 66,666 cells/mL in areas of highest observed accumulations. This is below the Warning level; however, it may develop into something more significant. Warnings will not be issued prior to 15 May. If conditions persist and worsen through that time, a Warning may be issued.

Cyanobacteria bloom conditions can change rapidly, so it is best to be on the watch for developing conditions. NHDES urges lake users to perform visual assessments of the water prior to recreating. Stay out of the water and keep pets out if you can see any visual accumulation or discoloration of the water and report it.

This is not an official cyanobacteria Warning, and signs do not need to be posted. The Alert will be active on the Healthy Swimming Mapper for at least a week. I will check in weekly to see if the bloom is visually persisting and will keep the Alert active until it has subsided.
