Respiratory disease outbreak: New Hampshire and neighboring states, Aug. 25, 2022

Statement issued on August 25, 2022:

The Cornell Margaret and Richard Riney Canine Health Center (RCHC) is aware of increasing evidence of a severe respiratory disease presenting in dogs, which resembles a combination of kennel cough and pneumonia. While the outbreak originated in New Hampshire, it may be spreading to other parts of New England.

Dr. Brian Collins, extension associate at the RCHC and senior lecturer of community animal practice, says it's important to watch for new reports of canine respiratory disease in your area.

He recommends that dog owners remain aware of the following situations that may increase your dog's risk of contracting this disease:

If your dog attends daycare, goes to a groomer, dog training classes, dog parks or is in other situations where there will be groups of dogs, be proactive in asking about any recent cases of respiratory disease.

Respiratory diseases are spread through direct dog-to-dog contact or through exposure from water droplets created by coughing or sneezing. These droplets can also contaminate objects such as bowls and toys, and even human hands.

If your dog is experiencing any signs of illness — including coughing, sneezing, labored breathing, or ocular or nasal discharge — and particularly if your dog is also lethargic or has a decreased appetite, be sure to contact your veterinarian. Do not expose your dog to other dogs until you are certain your dog is not contagious.
Keep your dog up-to-date on any vaccinations recommended by your veterinarian. Be especially careful if you have a puppy that is not yet fully vaccinated, or if you have a senior dog or one that may have a weakened immune system.

The RCHC will share updated recommendations as more information becomes available.

Veterinarians, particularly in Hillsboro County, are reporting an outbreak of respiratory infections that can get very serious, very quickly.

We havin’ a heat wave, as an old, old song once said. Please make sure not to keep your pets in a parked vehicle. The results can be fatal to them. Remember, state law allows citizens to make entry to rescue a pet in danger inside a hot car if the citizens have first called 911 and made a good faith attempt to find the owner first.

If you asked me to name the single most important thing you can do for your dog, it would be this.

Keep your dog feeling safe.

This is not to be confused with your dog being safe, or whether or not you think your dog is safe. This is about keeping your dog *feeling* safe. Which means identifying what your dog finds stressful or scary by learning how to observe and read their body language to recognize when, where, and under what circumstances they feel uncomfortable, and doing whatever you can to avoid those situations.

This can mean that your dog never visits another dog park.

This can mean that even though it’s a beautiful Sunday and you’d love to have brunch on a patio of your favorite restaurant with your dog, your dog stays home.

This can mean that you politely (or not) decline requests to pet your dog.

This can mean that when children come over your house, your dog is in another room with a yummy Kong.

This can mean that you walk your dog during quiet times of the day.

This can mean that you drive your dog to walk them in a different area.

Whatever it means for you and your dog, keep your dog feeling safe.

You are your dog’s best and only advocate. You are what stands between them and the rest of the world, a world where dogs are set up to fail every day with often heartbreaking consequences. This doesn’t mean that we don’t also actively and *humanely* work to help our dogs feel more comfortable and confident in this world, but it does mean that until they do, WE HAVE TO KEEP THEM FEELING SAFE.

Our dogs are relying on us, it’s our job to have their backs.

There are some changes at Littleton Pet Center necessitated by the COVID-19 situation. Our goal is to minimize people traffic at LPC. Do NOT bring your pet to LPC if you a cough or cold, flu or flu like symptoms or if you have been around someone that has these symptoms. We want to be able to continue to care for the animals while also caring for the well-being of our staff and volunteers.

Schedule Reductions - we have been forced to reduce hours. This is an especially difficult move because our team provides such invaluable services in support of pet community. We will continue to take dogs in Monday thru Friday for Daycare, however we will not have any weekend services available.

Thank you for your support and understanding during these difficult times. We will resume regular hours once we are over the COVID-19 situation. Look for future updates by email and on our page and website.
