🧑 We have been getting the most wonderful updates about recently-adopted senior cat Nala! Nala was very friendly with an awesome personality, and could often be found with her tongue sticking out. She enjoyed attention, as well as occasionally playing with toys. However, she was often passed over once people found out that she was on the older side. We weren't sure how she would adjust to life with a dog, as she didn't live with a dog in her last home, but so far, things are reportedly going great! A lot of folks only seek out kittens, thinking that adult cats have too hard of a time adjusting to change, dogs, etc. Nala is proof that even old cats can adjust to new things! 🧑

❄️ In the midst of these extreme temperatures, be sure to keep an eye on your own pets if they go outside. Frostbite and hypothermia can happen more quickly than people may think! Before starting cars, also watch for animals taking shelter under the cars, in the engines, etc. And don't forget to keep an eye out for pets outside that may need help. It takes everyone to make our community a safer place for animals. Lucky Cammy here was rescued from outdoors last week just a few days before the temps plummeted. She looks pretty cozy and happy to be safely indoors with us! ❄️

πŸ€πŸ–€ Lilly is still looking for a home! Lilly was surrendered a few months ago because her owner was moving/traveling for a new job, and she hasn't had any adoption interest yet. Lilly was grumpy when she first came to the shelter, as she wasn't used to so many cats and people. She has come around tremendously, and now doesn't cause any trouble. She loves watching birds out the window and napping, and enjoys some attention but isn't overly clingy or needy. She has been fine around other mature, mellow cats but would probably get annoyed or intimidated by rambunctious kitens or domineering bully cats. Lilly is easy to have around and just needs someone to give her a chance to blossom in their home! Lilly is around 2.5 - 3 years old, and to our knowledge, has never lived with a dog. Please share to help get Lilly adopted! πŸ–€πŸ€

UPDATE: Opi was adopted!

πŸ–€ Sweet Opi is in need of a home! Opi is around a year and a half old, and was surrendered due to moving. She's a very nice girl that is more of a wallflower. Whereas some of the other cats clamor for attention and greet you right when you walk in the door, Opi prefers to wait her turn and hope that you notice her. With a beautiful face, gentle disposition, and white belly and toes, what's not to love! She'd prefer a home on the quieter side (she did hide a bit when a family with young kids came to visit), and would probably do fine with another mellow cat (not a bully) πŸ–€

UPDATE: Audrey's going home this week!

🩢 Spotlighting Audrey on ! Audrey was found and brought in as a super skinny stray. She was estimated to be a year or two old. She has gained some weight and looks like a different cat! We're glad that we could provide a safe place for her out of the cold.

Audrey is very sweet and mild-tempered. She is able to co-exist with the other cats as long as they are nice to her and just let her do her thing. Audrey is friendly, quiet, and just an overall pleasant girl to have around 🩢

🐾 Happy ! We have spent the morning updating our Petfinder listings with new photos, new cats (including a couple Bengal kitties!), and updated ages for those that have been with us for a few months. Please check them all out (these photos are just a few) on Petfinder.com by visiting the link below! ⬇️

*Please note that we do not have any kittens up for adoption at this time. We are a busy shelter, so it takes time for us to process adoption applications and reach back out to folks. Calling your veterinary office ahead of time to give the okay for them to give us a reference when we call speeds up the process. Leaving questions blank, such as your veterinarian (required) or your landlord's contact information, will result to delays in application processing or an inability to process your application. Thank you!*

Happy ! 🐾 Let's keep the calico trend going with senior girl Pia (pictured here on our catio).

Pia is around 13 years old and is de-clawed in the front (this was of course not done here at our shelter). She is a very personable and friendly lady! She enjoys migrating between the two adoption rooms (she'll sit by the door and "ask" you to let her through), and generally doesn't mind the other cats, though she wouldn't be fond of nosy or hyper cats jumping on her or getting in her face. She'd do best with other mellow, older cats. Pia meows when she wants something, enjoys getting attention, and is just overall an awesome cat! Adopting an older pet is a rewarding experience, as you'll feel good knowing that they get to live out the rest of their days in a loving home again where they belong ❀️

UPDATE: Buttercup has been adopted!

πŸ§‘πŸ–€πŸ€ Help us find a home for a very special but very unhappy kitty! πŸ€πŸ–€πŸ§‘

Buttercup is around 2.5 years old and was surrendered to our shelter. She came in with her sister, but they don't seem particularly bonded or always get along, so they don't need to be adopted together.

Buttercup is a beautiful, sassy, sweet girl that is full of personality but is not able to fully relax or be herself here. She absolutely loves attention and would be a great lapcat and companion, but she just can't tolerate the other cats, and when they get near, she becomes crabby and agitated. Buttercup truly shines when she's alone with you. She follows you for attention, will paw at you to be petted, and climbs right into your lap if you're sitting. Buttercup should not live with any other pets, and may not love children either. She is desperately missing the comfort and companionship of being in a home and having a "person," and craves to be the center of your universe! Please share to help get her in a home where she belongs 🐾

🐾 We wanted to start 2025 off on a happy note and share another adoption success story for ! 🐾

Jill came to our shelter with her mom and 5 siblings when they were only about a month old. Poor little Jill seemed to have one problem after another, including loose stools, weight loss, an abscess, limping, and swollen joints in her legs! After multiple visits to the vet, cage rest, and medication, she was finally well and able to be spayed and put up for adoption. You can never give up on even the littlest creatures - they often surprise you with their strength! Jill was friendly and loveable through it all, and she had quite the will to live - after all, there was so much more running around, playing, and giving kisses that she hadn't gotten to do yet!

The first photo is Jill at the shelter, not looking her best, and the second is Jill - now Frankie - hanging out with her new brother and sister (Clover and Lucy), two other cats adopted from SCAR! She was lucky enough to be adopted by one of our volunteers, and so we still get to see pictures and hear stories of her mischief. She is doing great, and her siblings and mom were all adopted and are happy in their homes as well. That's a happy ending if we ever heard one! 😺

πŸŽ‰Wishing everyone a happy, fun, and safe New Year's Eve! 🎊

On the last day of the year, we found ourselves looking through shelter photographs from throughout 2024 - what a year, and wow did it seem to fly right by us! Between cat rescue and adoptions, clinics, fundraisers/other events and more, we've been busy busy busy! We wanted to share some of our numbers, achievements, and memories with you, as we couldn't have done it without you.

November 2024 marked the one-year anniversary of administrative assistant Molly Roger joining the team! She's pictured here hard at work.

🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾

As of today, we took in 296 cats and kittens in 2024. Whether they were surrendered by their owners, abandoned, feral/barn cats, or were otherwise rescued, they received food, veterinary care, shelter, and love while in our care. Many kitties often came in with medical issues that cost the shelter much more than our adoption fee, and your support allowed us to still get them the help they needed. "Kitten Season" was especially busy this year! We had multiple instances where we ended up taking in several kitties in one day, including one day where we had nineteen stray/feral kittens arrive at our doorstep and another where we picked up fifteen (mostly kittens but a few adults as well) from a well-meaning situation where a few pregnant stray cats turned into many more cats and kittens. We took in a couple more from this situation a few days later, and two were able to go back to live with the person that was feeding and caring for them (after being spayed, of course) while the rest were spayed/neutered and adopted. While there were some hard days and sad situations, seeing the kitties happy and safe in their new homes makes it all worth it! Of course, there were also many laughs and new friendships as well. Thank you to our staff, volunteers, Board of Directors, adopters, donors, and supporters for making these second chances possible. Pictured are some of the cats that were at our shelter the longest or those that happened to be in some of the cutest photos!

🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾

In 2024, we hosted 23 low-cost spay/neuter clinics, where 934 cats, dogs, and rabbits (some owned, some shelter animals awaiting adoption) were altered! This brings our totals to 6517 cat, 939 dog, and 46 rabbit spay/neuter surgeries since starting these clinics. Imagine how many unwanted litters and health problems were prevented! A huge thank you goes to all of the clinic volunteers, all of the clients and donors, and of course to Dr. Sara White and vet tech Doreen. We are able to keep these clinics low-cost for the public through volunteer labor and donations, so thank you for your support that has allowed us to continue providing this much-needed service to our community. We will be starting off the year strong with three clinics scheduled in January!

In addition to our spay/neuter clinics, we also hosted two cat/dog vaccination clinics and multiple walk-in pet nail trim clinics. Thank you to the Woodsville Pet Wellness Center and to Woodlands Veterinary Clinic - the vaccination clinics wouldn't have been possible without them. We know affordable veterinary care is in high demand in our area, and we are committed to helping care for our community's pets.

🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾 🐾

πŸŽ‡ Thank you for your continued support, and for hanging in there with this long post. Our mission would not be a reality without you, and we are excited to see what 2025 brings! πŸŽ†

πŸŽ„πŸŽ Taz hopes everyone had a wonderful day filled with all of their favorite things, whether that means family, friends, yummy food, or (in Taz's case) plenty of peace and quiet and birdwatching! Merry Christmas and happy holidays, everyone! πŸŽπŸŽ„

(Taz is 5-6 years old and is looking for a home. He did well in the past with a mature, mellow dog, but did not do well with rambunctious puppies. Gets along well with other chill cats. He would thrive in a relaxing adults-only home.

Feeling for Housewright Construction, Inc. for their raffle which turned into a fundraiser/donation to our shelter! Our hearts are so full this year 🐾

Amanda Kleintop, Construction Administrative Assistant/In-house Designer, pulled one of two lucky raffle tickets at our Christmas Party and was given the opportunity to choose an organization to which she would donate $250. Amanda chose The Second Chance Animal Rescue. https://www.facebook.com/secondchancear/
This donation will help Second Chance rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome abandoned and neglected local kittens and cats. We are so thankful we can donate to such a great non-profit this year.
