❄️ Hunter has the right idea about how to spend this chilly Sunday. Who doesn't love a catnap? ❄️

Sweet Hunter is around 3 years old and has been getting along fine with the other cats. He is supposedly friendly with dogs and kids as well. Once he gets comfortable, this couch potato would probably fit into most any type of home! 🐈

🧡🤍🖤 Our longest resident, Sweet Pea, had a lumpectomy this week to remove a suspicious mass. Aside from a short-lived adoption years ago that didn't work out, Sweet Pea has been with us since 2016! We hope her surgery will give us a lot more time with her. It's taken years, but she went from a skittish, feral-acting stray rescued from the cold to a sweet, brave girl that will sit on some people's laps and will yell at you to demand treats. We love you Sweet Pea and hope you feel better soon!

🙀 Did you know that February is Spay/Neuter Awareness Month?! 🙀

On the last day of the month, we wanted to share some info, as well as some anecdotes from SCAR cats demonstrating the many ways that spay/neuter surgery can improve the lives of pets. Click the individual cats' pictures to see their stories.

Spay/neuter is, of course, a huge way that we can combat pet overpopulation and the euthanasia of healthy animals in shelters across the nation, but it can have so many other benefits as well, from preventing pyometra and cancer to improving or eliminating behavioral issues (which could lead to pets ending up in shelters or being thrown out). Simply put, spay/neuter surgeries save and improve lives!

Common myths or questions:
🐈 Yes, female cats and dogs can still safely be spayed while in heat.
🐈‍⬛ No, you do not have to wait until your kitten is six months old or until she's gone through her first heat cycle. In fact, research shows that spaying before her first heat almost completely eliminates the chance of mammary cancer!
🐈 Yes, sibling pets WILL still mate, so if you don't have your brother and sister kittens/puppies altered (or boy kitten/puppy and mom), you will more than likely soon end up with even more.
🐈‍⬛ Yes, it is true that pets can go into heat as young as 4 months of age.
🐈 No, mother cats will not wait until their kittens are weaned to become pregnant again. Your mom cat can become pregnant with her next litter while she's still nursing her last one!
🐈‍⬛ Yes, nursing mother cats can safely be spayed. If her kittens are very young, they may need to accompany her to her appointment so that they can nurse. If she has too much milk for a "normal" midline spay, she can have a "flank" spay through an incision on her side instead.

We are still offering our low-cost spay/neuter clinics, generally twice each month, but we know many people are finding that we, like many places, sometimes have a wait. Please don't be discouraged if your local clinic has a waitlist - sometimes there are cancellations, and the sooner you add your pet to the waitlist, the sooner you'll get an appointment. If you never make the call or send the email, that surgery date will never come! If you find or take in a kitten at 8 weeks old, give us a call then rather than waiting until it's 6+ months old and spraying or in heat.

And of course, we want to give a giant thank-you shoutout to Dr. Sara White and the vet techs of Spay ASAP. Dr. Sara performs the surgeries at our spay/neuter clinics, and has provided these surgeries to thousands upon thousands of shelter animals and family pets in the North Country for an affordable price. What would we do without you all?!

🖤 Dahlia is still waiting for a home! 🖤

Dahlia has been with us since early January, and was brought in as a stray by people that noticed she was hanging around their home for shelter from the elements. She was friendly, and we unfortunately don't know how she ended up homeless outdoors. This beauty is a bit of a wallflower in that she is quieter than the other cats and is happy to take a catnap up high away from the commotion. Dahlia isn't overly clingy but enjoys being petted and likes to rub on your legs. She'd likely be happiest in a quieter home without super young kids or a ton of other pets. Dahlia just needs a home where she can relax, be herself, and live the good housecat life with people she likes.

We do not have info on her history with dogs. She coexists with the other calm cats but does not appreciate hyper, nosy, or in-her-face young cats. Estimated to be 3+ years of age.

🩶 Many of our followers may remember Merlin, a fluffy grey cat that we posted for adoption a while back. When a good Samaritan rescued him and brought him to us, he was skin and bones! We got a wonderful update from his new family, and he's living the good life now! We are eternally grateful for all of our adopters and supporters (and for the kind souls that find and rescue the strays off the streets) - without you all, we couldn't help these guys get their second chances! 🩶

🌟 We're still looking for the purrfect home for Bengal kitty, Orion! 🌟

Orion is a busy guy with boundless energy and curiosity, so he wouldn't thrive in a small home or one where he's left all alone all day long. Orion is aggressive with other cats, so we will not adopt him to a home with other cats. He has experience living with a dog, but it's possible he would do better with a dog that is larger than him so that he won't bully it.

Orion is around three years old and very friendly with people. His ideal home would have plenty of space, things to climb, windows to look out of, and possibly even a catio! Orion's adoption fee is higher than our normal $120. We want to make sure his adopter is really committed to providing him a forever home. This silly, beautiful boy will make an amazing companion for the right person. If you're looking for a lazy lapcat, Orion's not the cat for you, but if you're looking for a fun, cool best friend, look no further!

Administrative Assistant Molly Roger wants your input!

As many of you know, each year we hold a giant tent sale fundraiser in August (basically, an absolutely HUGE yard sale!) Due to rising temperatures (the storage trailer would get unbelievably hot during the Summer hours collecting, packing, and sorting donations), the sheer amount of hours and labor needed to unload and organize all of the sale items at the site of the sale (and also to re-load the leftovers and to collect the donations all Summer at the trailer/shelter) and other factors, we are looking to try something different this year. We still want to put on a fun event for our community, and of course to also raise much-needed funds for our shelter, while making things a bit more manageable for our small team. And we want to include you!

We were considering the idea of holding a sort of flea market or community yard sale/market, where folks can "rent space" to sell their own antiques or items (there are still details to be sorted out, like whether we can provide tables or whether folks would have to supply their own, etc.). Our Giant Annual Tent Sale always brought in huge crowds, which means lots of eyes! If possible, we would love to even have a couple food trucks or other way of providing refreshments and snacks for everyone.

There would still be a tent, and we would also have items and goodies of our own to sell - just not a full semi's worth.

We do not have anything concrete (dates, etc.) planned quite yet - At this stage, we want to put out feelers to see if this would be something that folks would be interested in either attending or participating in so that we can get to planning! Thank you so much for your input, suggestions, and support 🐾

🧡 THANK YOU to Little Village Toy & Book Shop for the donation from their January penny jar proceeds. The donation is helping us to care for kitties like Pip and Ollie, young brothers that recently ended up back at our shelter after their owner's living situation changed. P.S. They're around 1 year - 1.5 years old, and looking for a home together! Bonded pair. They are very sweet 🧡

🐾 Ozzy, brave defender of the cat food! 🐾

Ozzy is still in need of a home. He lived with a youngster in his last home, and as you can tell from the picture, he loves to ham it up. He unfortunately can get overstimulated and hissy here, but he's not used to being around so many other cats. We're confident that he'll do just fine once he's back in a loving home environment 🩶

UPDATE: Levi's been adopted!

🤍 Check out this unique fella - Levi is a pure white kitty, and has thumbs to boot! This sweet, silly boy was taken in by a local as a stray, but they ended up having to surrender him because their two older female cats weren't getting along with him. He was getting along well with their younger cat/kitten. They did also have a dog, and they said he got along with the dog. Overall, Levi seems like he'd make a great family pet! Estimated to be a young adult. Send us an adoption application today! 🤍

🩶 Happy ! Meet Ozzy, a (very photogenic) two-year-old male kitty that was surrendered due to moving/a change in circumstances. He has had urinary issues in the past, and so is currently eating a food specially formulated for urinary health. Ozzy would be a great fit in a home with children, where he will get plenty of attention and love! He has not had experience living with other cats previously, so we will see in the coming days how he feels about other cats. His surrender form lists that he lived with a dog but was timid around it, but it's possible he could be fine with the right type of dog. However, you don't want a kitty with a history or urinary problems to live in too stressful of an environment, as this can exacerbate issues.

Ozzy will need to eat this special diet for his lifetime. There are many different options when it comes to urinary tract health cat food - speak to your vet for recommendations or for more information on cat urinary health. Other than his food, he is a normal, friendly cat - we're hoping his special diet won't cause him to have to wait a long time for someone to take him home 🩶
