Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) is an algae overgrowth that turns water bluish green in color. The algae may produce toxins that are harmful to pets (and people). Not all blue-green algae blooms produce toxins, however, it is impossible to tell just by looking at the water. Therefore, all blooms should be considered toxic. Dogs are exposed by drinking the affected water (including swimming). The toxins target the hepatic, gastrointestinal and nervous systems. Signs of toxin ingestion include vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, lethargy, and pale mucous membranes, muscle tremors, rigidity, and seizures. These can begin as quickly as 30 minutes after exposure. Prognosis is guarded to poor; it can be fatal. Prevention is key! Do not let your pet drink from suspected body of waters. If you notice the signs described above, please seek veterinary help immediately.
