Armadillidium maculatum is a really fun isopod native to France. It is commonly known as "zebra isopod" as its natural found appearance is black and white stripes. This species has a really fantastic pattern expression; captive cultures display ranging from almost white to almost black. This isopod breeds year round and is quite fearless, making it a fantastic display animal.

Happy New Year, freakz & geekz! 🎉
Lookit this! After about 10 days or so, these superwormz I just isolated will begin to curl into 'C' shapes, before pupating! The pupae will get dark, and after 2-3 weeks will hatch out into adult beetles! Once the beetles lay eggs, it will be another 4+ months (sometimes longer!) until the baby superwormz are big enough & old enough to go thru this process themselves. 🤗

As you may have already heard,, on the last day of 2021, the world lost the very beloved, talented, and compassionate Betty White, at the age of 99.

I want to take a moment and recognize her - not just for her 70+ years of professional comedic wonderfulness - but just as importantly, for her longtime fierce and tireless role as a voice for animals. Her list of achievements are way too numerous to mention here, but suffice it to say that for many many years, Betty used her spotlight to shine it on others who couldn’t speak for themselves, and to educate her many fans about empathy for animals. She will be sorely missed, but her legacy will live on for another 100 years- and beyond.

Calling all fish freaks & tank addicts! This one is for you! 🐟
Sitting here in my bedroom & looking at Spider-Man's house, I realize I'm a bit behind on tank maintenance. It's been about.... 2.5 weeks? Give or take. I did top off water levels last weekend, but with Leela drinking it & no lid (I use frogbit as a floater in this one), evap. rate is much faster. This is a post for anyone who wants a planted tank but isn't sure how much "work" is involved. It's not much. This is just a simple 10g betta/guppy tank. Tomorrow I'll spend about 20 mins snipping roots and maybe swiping glass. Otherwise, I top off water, cycle lighting, and go. I dont even do the fishkeepers coveted weekly water changes. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Self-sustaining is the way to go. Ditch the fake stuff and get real. HMU anytime for tips, tricks, advice, etc. Bugz not drugz, mmkay? Happy NEW YEAR!!! 🌿

IT'S SUPERWORMS!!! 😁

If you're in the market for a new feeder insect for your reptile, superworms are a great choice! They are high in protein and fat, and can generally provide a rich source of hydration and nutrition for your pet.

Superworms (Zophobas morio) are a type of darkling beetle larvae. They are a common feeder insect for both insectivorous and omnivorous reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, and other exotic pets. This is because they are readily available, inexpensive, and easy to house. Superworms are high in fat and phosphorus, so they are best fed as treats or in a rotation with low-fat, high-calcium feeders.

What are the nutrition facts for superworms?
Moisture — 57.9%
Protein — 19.7%
Fat — 17.7%
Ash — 1.0%
Fiber — 2.7%
Calcium — 177mg/kg
Phosphorus — 2370mg/kg

Before being fed to a reptile or amphibian, superworms need to be coated in calcium powder, which helps balance the high amount of phosphorus that they contain. Do this by sticking the worms in a paper or plastic bag with some calcium powder inside and gently shaking until they are evenly coated. Luckily for you, my superworms have calcium added to their diets to take away any extra work that you must do before feeding. But, a little extra never hurts.

Superworms have very tiny legs, so generally, they're not hard to give to your pet reptile, amphibian, or invertebrate. You can handle them with soft-tipped feeding tweezers or by using your hands, and you can feed them to your pet this way too — although if your pet is known to have poor aim, it's best to use the tweezers. Alternatively, you can give the superworms to your pet in an escape-proof bowl.

Do superworms bite?
Yes, they can bite, but it's not likely to hurt. Their mouths are too small to damage human skin.

They may be able to hurt reptiles and amphibians with thin or delicate skin. You may see your pet flinch if they get bitten. However, superworms generally don't do significant damage — crickets have a worse bite. The belief that superworms can chew their way out of a reptile or amphibian's stomach is a myth.
