When we got into rabbits again about 4 years ago.. we made a commitment to not overproduce rabbits just as we had done when we raised our Australian Shepherds..our rabbits especially our breeders are our pets. They provide us with babies to sell as pets to offset our expenses.....what we have learned in the last 4 years is that there are rabbit mills just like puppy mills.. and it's a sad thing...God has entrusted us to care for the animals that we have in our possession , He convicted us that too many is not a good thing, we would take in every rabbit that we would run across who needed care and a home. Our out look is a bit different I supposed than most breeders. We like having a close bond with all of them, just as people do with their loving and faithful dogs or cats.
Many of our rescues we have rehomed, we helped them and found new homes for them, spent lots of dollars on them, but we can no longer continue to do so because we don't have time for our original herd that we committed ourselves to care for and love...yes we love our rabbits, they are not just a means to make money or trade up when they no longer serve our purpose. We have had to downsize our herd as my husband is not physically capable of caring for 20 rabbits anymore. We have found good homes for them with people who are like minded, but it was extremely difficult..we will continue to raise smaller breeds(my hobby) but our meat breeds numbers have been greatly reduced, we're finally ok with that..we do thank all of those people who have gotten rabbits from us, to start their own rabbit journey.. our hope is that people do not see rabbits as a way to make a buck, to breed them to constantly changing required standards.. but to enjoy and be thankful for these creatures that are God given ... breed responsibly....less is more...
