🌿 Acupuncture for Horses: Unlocking Natural Healing! 🌿

Did you know that acupuncture isn't just for humans? 🐴 It can also be incredibly beneficial for our equine friends!

Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the body to promote healing, alleviate pain, and balance energy. For horses, this ancient practice can:
✨ Relieve Pain: Effective for chronic pain, arthritis, and muscle tension.
✨ Boost Circulation: Helps improve blood flow and speed up recovery after injuries. ✨ Support Mobility: Helps with joint problems, stiffness, and flexibility.
✨ Enhance Well-Being: Promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and supports mental clarity.
✨ Aid Respiratory Issues: Can help with breathing problems and improve overall lung health.

Many horse owners are turning to acupuncture as a complementary therapy alongside traditional treatments, seeing improvements in their horses’ performance, mood, and overall health. 🐎💪

If your horse is struggling with pain, stiffness, or stress, acupuncture could be a natural, holistic option worth considering. Here at PEVS, Dr. Kelly is ready to help your horse feel their best! Call us at 630-984-5221 to schedule an exam today!

VACCINE HIGHLIGHT

🚨 Why the Flu/Rhino Vaccine is Crucial for Your Horse's Health 🚨

As horse owners, we all want the best for our equine companions! 🐴 One of the most important ways to protect your horse from potentially life-threatening diseases is by vaccinating against Equine Influenza (Flu) and Rhinopneumonitis (Rhino).
💉 Here's why it matters:
1️⃣ Prevent Serious Illness: Both Flu and Rhino are highly contagious viral infections that can spread quickly in horse populations, causing fever, coughing, nasal discharge, and sometimes severe respiratory issues. The Flu can also lead to secondary bacterial infections that can be life-threatening.
2️⃣ Protect Your Horse from Reproductive Issues: The Rhino virus can cause abortion in pregnant mares, leading to devastating consequences for both the mare and the foal. Vaccination helps protect against this risk.
3️⃣ Keep Your Horse Active & Healthy: For horses that travel, compete, or interact with others, the risk of exposure is higher. A vaccinated horse is less likely to contract these infections, ensuring they stay strong, healthy, and ready for action.
4️⃣ Herd Immunity: Vaccinating your horse helps protect other horses in your community, especially those who may not be able to receive vaccines themselves due to health issues.

⏰ Don't wait! Call us at 630-984-5221 to get your horse vaccinated today. It's a simple step that can make a big difference in their health and well-being! 🌟

🐴 Understanding Founder (Laminitis) in Horses 🐴

Founder, also known as laminitis, is a serious and painful condition that affects a horse’s hooves, causing inflammation in the sensitive tissue (laminae) that connects the hoof wall to the bone. If left untreated, it can lead to permanent damage and severe lameness.

⚠️ Signs of founder include:
👉 Sudden lameness or unwillingness to move
👉 Warm hooves, especially around the coronary band
👉 Increased pulse in the hooves
👉 Rocking back onto the hind legs to relieve pressure from the front feet
👉 Shifting weight from one foot to another

What causes founder?
Founder can be triggered by several factors, including:
Overfeeding high-sugar feeds or grains
Obesity
Rapid weight gain or sudden dietary changes
Excessive exercise on hard ground
Endocrine disorders (like Cushing’s Disease)

🩺 Early detection is crucial for successful treatment. If you suspect your horse might be foundering, seek immediate veterinary attention. The sooner it’s addressed, the better the chances of recovery and long-term hoof health.

🐎 Prevention involves:
✅ Maintaining a balanced diet, avoiding excessive grains or sugary feeds
✅ Regular hoof care and trimming
✅ Monitoring body condition and weight

🐴💉 Why Core EQ Innovator Vaccine is Essential for Your Horse's Health 💉🐴

As horse owners, we want to ensure our horses live long, healthy lives. One of the most important steps in achieving this is keeping them protected from harmful diseases. The Core EQ Innovator Vaccine is a crucial part of any horse’s vaccination schedule. Here's why:
🔒 Comprehensive Protection – The Core EQ Innovator Vaccine protects against the most common and dangerous diseases like West Nile virus, Eastern and Western Encephalomyelitis, Tetanus, and Rabies. These diseases can be life-threatening, and vaccination is the best prevention.
💪 Stronger Immune System – This vaccine helps build and strengthen your horse's immune system, making it more resilient to infections and diseases, even in the face of potential exposure.
🌍 Public Health Safety – Some diseases, like Rabies, can be transmitted to humans, making vaccination not only important for your horse but also for the safety of those around you.
🗓️ Annual Protection – Just one or two shots each year can provide year-round protection, giving you peace of mind as you enjoy riding, training, or simply spending time with your horse.

Don't wait for an outbreak to happen—be proactive! Give us a call today at 630-984-5221 to get your spring vaccines scheduled!! 🐎💖

🦄 Understanding Body Condition Scores (BCS) in Horses 🐴

Keeping track of your horse’s body condition is essential for their overall health and well-being. One of the best tools we have is the Body Condition Score (BCS), a scale from 1 to 9 that helps us assess how much fat a horse has on its body.

🌟 What’s the BCS Scale?
1-3 (Underweight): Your horse may be too thin, which could be a sign of illness, malnutrition, or other health concerns.
4-5 (Ideal Weight): Horses in this range are in good health, with just the right amount of fat and muscle.
6-7 (Overweight): Excess weight can put stress on joints, and may cause long-term health problems like laminitis.
8-9 (Obese): A very high BCS indicates serious health risks, including metabolic issues and heart strain.

🔍 How to Check BCS:

Check your horse’s ribs, back, neck, and tailhead.
Look for fat deposits or areas of muscle loss.
Observe their overall posture and energy levels.

🏇 Why It Matters: A proper BCS ensures your horse is getting the right nutrition, exercise, and care. It can help prevent conditions like colic, laminitis, and even respiratory issues caused by obesity.

Regularly monitor your horse’s BCS to make sure they’re in top shape for performance, longevity, and happiness! 🌟

VACCINE HIGHLIGHT

Why the Strangles (SVN) Vaccine is Important for Your Horse 🐴💉

As a horse owner, your horse’s health is your top priority! The Strangles vaccine, also known as the SVN vaccine, plays a vital role in protecting horses from a contagious respiratory disease caused by the Streptococcus equi bacteria.
Here’s why it’s essential:
🔹 Prevention of Strangles: Strangles is highly contagious and can spread rapidly through barns, shows, and competitions. The SVN vaccine helps reduce the risk of infection and prevents outbreaks.
🔹 Protecting Your Horse’s Health: Horses infected with Strangles can suffer from fever, swelling, abscesses, and in severe cases, complications like pneumonia. Vaccination significantly reduces the severity of symptoms if the disease is contracted.
🔹 Community Protection: Vaccinating your horse not only protects them but also helps safeguard other horses in your barn, at events, or on the trail.
🔹 Peace of Mind: Stay ahead of Strangles and minimize the risk of this dangerous disease. A simple vaccination can make a big difference.

MIDWEEK MYTHBUSTER! 📢

Many people think that horses can safely eat grass clippings (grass is grass, right?) but that is a pretty common misconception and grass clippings actually pose a number of dangers to our equine friends.

While grass is meant to be slowly picked, ripped and chewed by the horse, grass clippings can quickly clump and cause choke if the animal ingests too many too fast. Grass clippings are also prone to fermentation which can cause colic, stomach and intestinal impactions, founder and laminitis.

Take-home message: Keep your horse away from grass clippings and in general never feed horses any food without the owner’s permission.

Thank you to the Horse Owner Education Committee for providing this information.

✅ More flexibility and agility
✅ A lighter, more compact frame
✅ Incredible stamina—perfect for endurance riding!

Arabians truly are a special breed, both inside and out! 💫

💓 Horse Heart Rate: What You Need to Know! 🐴

Your horse’s heart rate is a vital sign of their health and fitness! Here’s a quick guide:

✅ Normal heart rate at rest:
• Adults: 28-44 bpm
• Foals: 60-80 bpm

🏃‍♂️ What can raise it?
• Exercise
• Stress or excitement
• Illness, fever, or pain

👉 How to check:
Feel for a pulse under the jaw or inside the thigh. Count beats for 30 seconds and multiply by 2!

⏱️ After exercise:
A healthy horse’s heart rate should return to normal within 10-15 minutes. If it stays high, it could signal a fitness or health issue.

🚨 Call your vet if:
• Their heart rate stays too high or too low
• They show signs like heavy sweating, panting, or lethargy

Your horse’s heartbeat tells a story—keep an eye (or ear!) on it for a healthy, happy partner. ❤️🐎

• Small, dark bumps that change in size or shape
• Ulcerated or irritated growths
• Tumors that interfere with movement

✅ What to do:
• Regularly check your horse for new or changing growths
• Protect sun-exposed areas
• Consult your vet if you notice anything concerning—treatment options include surgery, cryotherapy, or medication

Early detection and regular monitoring are key! 🐎

🌬️ Horse Respiratory Rate: What You Should Know! 🐴

A horse’s breathing is a key sign of their health and fitness! Here’s a quick guide:

✅ Normal breathing rate: 8-16 breaths per minute at rest (foals: 30-40).
🏃‍♂️ Exercise, heat, stress, or illness can all affect how fast they breathe.
👀 Watch their flanks rise and fall or feel for breath at their nostrils to check.
⏱️ After exercise, breathing should return to normal within 5-15 minutes.
🚨 Call your vet if you notice labored breathing, flared nostrils, coughing, or if their breathing doesn’t return to normal after rest.

A calm, steady breath = a healthy horse! 🐎

🌱 Fun Tidbit: The length of a mare’s pregnancy can vary based on factors like breed, age, and whether it’s her first foal.

So, while a mare’s pregnancy may seem long, it’s all for that adorable foal that will be galloping around before you know it!
