Apparently last night's storm wrecked my phone line, so the phone and internet are out. Verizon won't be out to investigate until Wednesday between 8am and 5 pm, which is SUPER convenient. Hoping I'm not the only one out and it will be fixed sooner.
A couple of deer from the first batch of 2023 deer.
Been taking a few pictures, but haven't had a chance to post till now. Some of the animals pictured are not ready for pick up, some have already been picked up, and others are next in line for mounting. There is a handful of Europeans left, but overall the turnaround time was WAY better than the last couple of years. The forms for the 2023 season deer are on the way, the horns for those forms are on the pool table. Most of the small game from this season didn't come in until after the first of the year, so those will be quite a while, the small game that came in before Jan 2024 will be mounted over the summer.
The forms for the last batch of 2022 deer and deer dropped off in 2023 before the start of the 2023 season are in. The horns on the pool table are the last of 2022 and mid 2023. The deer mounted that are on the floor and the 2 floor pedestals are waiting for finish work, while all the mounted deer on the walls are ready for pick up. I called everyone last night, if I didn't speak to you I left a message. I will be starting on 2023 deer and small game about mid May. Europeans are still supposed to be completed by the end of May per the bug man.
Out of nails! There are finished deer on floor, catching up. I will be in this Saturday (April 6) from 12-4. Weekend hours will be getting scarce, but I will be in late on Tuesdays fairly regularly as well as other times during the week.

Certified letters went out today for mounts that have not been picked up. One has been ready since 2020. A couple have been ready since 2022. This means there will be a few pieces for sale as I don't foresee these getting picked up at this point. I usually wait a good long time before letters go out, but it looks like I will need to stay on top of this and enforce the storage fee and get letters out before weeks turn into years.
First batch of europeans are in. The bug guy is expecting to have them all done by the end of May. I can't really say when any particular ones will be done, but looking like a much more acceptable turnaround from the last guy and they look great. For the most part I am concentrating on deer, I may work some other things in as I go, but I listed all the small game turnaround times as a year this season to allow a longer stretch of deer mounting. Next year the scheduling should be more normal.
Here's what been happening! Got all of 2022 small game mounted, the otter and 2 c***s are not finished yet, but they are mounted, the rest are ready for pick up. I have several deer waiting for finish work which will start Tuesday evening. The next batch of deer forms are in and I will be back to mounting deer Monday. I've been concentrating on getting animals mounted, so things are getting mounted faster than they are getting finished, but it should start to even out some now.
Messy batch of pictures, but it's update time. I have 2 racc***s and an otter from 2022 still to do, but otherwise the small game from 2022 is all mounted. The deer from November 2022 should be all finished up by the second week of March, with the December deer of course to follow. I hate that things are running late, I am putting in a lot of over time to catch up. I'm averaging one day off for every 10 I work, and staying until 8 or 9 pm most Tuesdays!
Update time. Just got some beauties back from the freeze drier. Also have the next 8 deer forms in, these are late November deer. Also want to remind those that asked for jaw bones, they need to get picked up. I just tossed a basket of jaws from the last few years that never got picked up. I will toss any that aren't picked up by Feb 1.
Update time! I am still taking in deer, however, things have slowed down enough to get back to last years work. I have had these guys mounted up since October, but have just now gotten the finish work and habitat work done. Next week I will be mounting some deer, but keep in mind they will not be ready for pick up for a few weeks. Hoping I can keep a pace up!
Finally got a chance to post an update. As you can see things have gotten a little out of hand, but I'll get the hammer out one of these days. I have been pretty steady taking in new deer, so mounting is on hold until things settle down. My goal is to try to have everything from last year done by the end of February, a bit of a tall order, but I will do my best to meet that deadline. I will be closed Sunday and Monday (26 & 27th). Monday I will be taking the first load of hides to the tannery as usual. Once I am back to mounting deer I will shoot out another update.
Got some more deer forms in for the horns that are on the pool table. Also have a few pieces of small game mounted, not yet finished. Still working on getting some stuff mounted before deer are coming in heavy, but no real hard completion times other than I should have the deer and small game wrapped up by the end of February.
Finished up the big pieces, so once they get picked up I can order some deer forms. Not sure how many deer will get mounted before I have new deer coming in, but I can get forms prepped and ready. I will continue to get some small game mounted up as well. Almost all of the europeans have come back, and the rugs and soft tan hides are completed, but NOT in the shop yet. I will call everyone once their rugs/hides have actually arrived.
Update time! Been very busy getting the game heads and large life size animals mounted and finished. I only have one more large life size left which should be done before muzzle loader pretty easily. I will be mounting as many small game animals and deer as possible before muzzle loader comes in. I am currently working on deer that were dropped off in mid November. I am just about caught up, so all of the deer from last season should be done by the end of February. I have 2 spare capes available. There are still some skulls at the bug man, and I will likely be using a different bug man this season. All wet tans are back from the tannery, but the soft tans are not, they should be here any day tho. I think that pretty much covers it for now!
Not much of an update, but these are the deer left to mount. The deer on the pool table are next in line. These deer are ones that were dropped off early to mid November. I still can't really give hard dates for completion (as usual), but am working to have as many done as possible before muzzle loader comes in. I should be pretty close to the estimated completion dates at the pace I have right now. As far as the small game, that is going a little slower, but most are tanned and I am working them in as I can.
Update time. I am currently working on October deer, small game, game heads,and the rest of the large life size animals. I talked to the tannery and the balance of hides will not ship before the end of August, possibly later. I do not know when I will start the November deer, but will post when I do. Keep in mind estimated completion times run from about a year to 14 months as stated on the contract. I have had very limited help this year and started out behind due to supply problems last year, so things may still be a little slow going, but I feel like I am making a good bit of progress. Somehow between mowing grass I got a few pieces of small game done. I also have the first 4 deer from this year mounted, not finished, and will be working on other game heads next. Then I will be jumping back and forth from deer to small game for the rest of the year. The other large pieces will be worked in through the summer.
Getting some small game and large game mounted, got a batch of deer skulls in from the bug man.
These forms will get me up to date on deer mounts. I will start mounting these deer next week, this means these deer will not be ready for pick up for another 2-4 weeks. Today all the red foxes and racc***s went into tanning pickle. They will not get mounted for quite some time.
Finishing up at 11:15 tonight, got another batch finished. Moving on to prep the forms from the last post to bring the deer progress up to July 2022. My worker is still out on medical leave, hopefully he will be able to return soon!
This is the current scene, starting to do finish work on the mounted deer. It will probably take all of next week to get them all done. Then I will be prepping and mounting those forms. Those forms are for all the deer that came in up to July 2022.
More deer ready for mounting, soooooo close to being caught up!
I have 9 more deer from last year mounted, that leaves just a handful of deer that would normally have been done before muzzle loader. I will be mounting coyotes while these deer dry this week. After that, I will get these deer finished and then mount the rest of last years deer that came in during the season. My worker is out recovering from surgery, so as soon as he is cleared to work, we will get the bears and large life size animals going.
Bear rugs are in!! They are beautiful as usual.

This video shows what happens when animals are packed with ice. Ice melts and penetrates the skin as well as soaking the hair. This distorts the skin and significantly weakens the hair. If you feel you need to keep animals cold, freeze milk jugs or laundry soap jugs ahead of time. A bag offers no protection from melted ice soaking the hair.
Do Not gut small game
If you are not going to eat it, do not gut it. I will be charging an additional $100 for unnecessary gutting.
Spare Capes are no longer easily available. If you are unsure how to cape your deer, bring the whole deer and I will cape it for you at no extra charge. It takes about 30 minutes. Cutting the cape all the way down the back in NOT acceptable, these deer will have an additional $100 added to the cost of the mount. If you kill a deer and do not want to mount it and it measures at least 19 inches right behind the ears, I may be willing to purchase that cape, feel free to call to discuss if you are in such a situation.

Surprise! Soft tan hides have arrived early, they usually do not come in until October 1. I have called everyone and found a couple phones not in service. If your phone is not working please figure out a way to contact me about picking up your hide. I will be in this Saturday from 1-4. Thank you!
