While you might not like the weather in the valley right now, our Snow Leopard Trini is absolutely loving it! This is the best time to try to catch a glimpse of the gorgeous girl. The colder and drearier the weather, the happier she is. As always, there is still no guarantee that she will be out of her den; she does have to keep up her mysterious image πŸ˜‰.

If you want to make Trini's, and all our other animals', holiday season extra special this year, please check out our Wishlist linked in our bio!❄️

More on Monarchs
Monarch butterflies lay their eggs on milkweed since the plants are too toxic to be eaten by animals. Their milk sap contains cardiotoxins that could result in gastro-intestinal concerns, seizures, and could also be fatal depending on the quantity of milkweed ingested. By laying their eggs on milkweed, female monarchs are protecting their eggs from being predated upon.

Some of the native milkweed to our state our narrow leaf, showy, and woollypod. Their seeds are dispersed by air, and each seed possesses a fluffy attachment that helps them blow further away from their parent plant. The seeds are also very light and easy to carry by the wind.

Our very first narrow leaf milkweed had two seed pods. We will be closely monitoring the rest next year to collect seeds. For more information on monarch butterflies and milkweed, visit Monarch Watch and Xerces Society

Over the past years, Micke Grove Zoo (MGZ) has played an integral role in the Species Survival Plan (SSP) organized by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) - for example the zoo's golden lion tamarin SSP partnership increased their regional captive population by 10%. The zoos breeding track record has also been immensely successful with other threatened exotic wildlife such as the northern bald ibises, marbled teal ducks, southern pudu, and western pond turtles.

MGZ is seeking to expand its conservation goals to include an in-situ conservation program that will conserve threatened monarch butterflies, Danaus plexippus ssp. plexippus and valley oak trees, Quercus lobata which are locally threatened.

The Monarch Waystation Project was launched in the fall of 2023 by breaking ground for the pollinator garden. An area near the Zoo entrance was selected. At least three types of native milkweed species and 10 types of drought resistant California native wildflower species that provide feeding and breeding habitats for monarchs. The area was measured and mapped, and a drift map and planting list were created.

Volunteers were involved in the project ex*****on and were instrumental in measuring and mapping the area, preparing the area for planting, gridding the area according to drift map plant locations, and preparing pits for plants. Some of the most experienced volunteers were trained to plant milkweed and California native wildflowers.

*Some of these wildflowers that are considered natives were introduced to California from neighboring states over the last few generations.

We had an exciting prospect of planting 30 valley oak saplings in the natural oak woodland inside Shumway Oak Regional Park.

We invited a volunteer group from the University of Pacific (UoP) to help us dig 30, 1.5-foot holes for sapling planting. We also used their help to place rebar stakes next to each hole.

When the oak saplings are planted, the rebar stakes would help provide support to the chicken wire that we were going to encircle the saplings with to protect them from being eaten by gophers and ground squirrels.

The UoP volunteers were absolutely fantastic. They dug the holes and placed the rebar stakes effortlessly.

We are truly thankful and appreciative for all the passion and hard work your team put into this project. We could not have done it without your support.

The first phase of our Landscape Restoration project was completed on Saturday (11/1/25) by the Fury 10U boys who planted 30+ valley oak saplings in Shumway Oak Grove Regional Park. They planted these saplings gently filling holes with soil. They encircled these saplings with chicken wire to protect them from ground squirrels and gophers and watered them.

Fury 10U boys, we thank you for your hard work and diligence. Your happiness, laughter, and infectious smiles made this project a wonderful experience.
