Nyx, our Ringtail, is still adjusting to the time change. As a nocturnal animal, she is loving the longer nights! However, that makes the daylight hours all the more difficult to get through😴.

Now that Daylight Saving Time has ended, our zoo has started its winter hours. We will be open Wednesdays-Sundays from 10AM to 4:30PM with final tickets being sold at 4PM.

It's International Snow Leopard Day!
What better way to celebrate than to post a bunch of pictures of our beautiful Snow Leopard, Trini and share some fun facts about her!💙

Fun Trini Facts:

-Trini is 11 years old and her birthday is May 3rd!

-She came to Micke Grove Zoo from the Albuquerque Biological Park in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

-In the second photo, Trini is next to a black, rubber tub. This rubber tub is her favorite thing and has been dubbed her "baby" by the keepers. Trini's #1 rule is: Don't. Touch. Her. Baby. Ever. She doesn't like it when her keepers move her baby to different parts of the exhibit.

-Her favorite scents that her keepers use for enrichment are cinnamon and nutmeg!

-Trini's keepers are working on multiple training behaviors to allow for more efficient vet exams. Some of those behaviors include side presents as well as "up" and "lay down", all of which allow the vets to get a full visual of her body. Her favorite training rewards are goat's milk and chicken!

At the beginning of September, Girl Scout troops 2322 and 917 came to the zoo to learn about how we take care of the animals and what enrichment is. During their visit, they built two browsing braids out of firehose as well as gave us a bag full of braided fleece that we can give to our animals for enrichment!

Thank you girls so much for all of your hard work, our animals and zookeepers greatly appreciate it!

If you would like to schedule a scout program at Micke Grove zoo, call 209-331-2011 or email our education coordinator, Madeline, at mchester@sjgov,org.

It's International Vulture Awareness Day! As you can see, our Turkey Vulture, Humphrey, is very excited about it (especially since his 20th birthday was also this week)!🎉🥳

Vultures are an important part of our ecosystem as they act as nature's clean-up crew by eating dead animals. Their stomach acid is so strong (stronger than battery acid, as a matter of fact), that it can kill off any bacteria that might have ended up on their dinner!

Our Red-fan Parrots have their own private splash pad! 💁 (it's their keepers holding a hose on the mist setting). This is a great way for them to stay cool and interact with their caretakers!

It’s International Golden Lion Tamarin Day!

Golden Lion Tamarins are an endangered species native to the rainforests of Brazil. It is estimated that there are only 3,200 left in the wild, mainly due to habitat loss. Currently, Golden Lion Tamarins only have about 5% of their original habitat left as a result of deforestation, mining, illegal logging, and urbanization.

Other threats to the species include poaching and being taken from the wild for the illegal pet trade.

In order to increase Golden Lion Tamarin populations, many zoos-including the Micke Grove Zoo- are part of the Species Survival Plan (SSP) for the species. This program helps maintain healthy and genetically diverse populations of endangered animals with the goal of reintroducing them to their natural habitats.

Many animals will change their appearance during different times of the year. Our Red Fox siblings, Finn and Piper, are great examples!

During the winter, their coats will be fuller and fluffier to help keep them warm. As the weather gets warmer, they will shed their winter coats so that they can stay nice and cool all summer long! 🦊

Winter picture: Finn is sitting in the front while Piper is laying down.
Summer picture: Finn has his back towards the camera.

It's Zookeeper Appreciation Week!🎉

We are so grateful to our keepers who do everything they can to give our animals long and happy lives, even in this 100 degree weather. Our zookeepers do a lot for our animals, including but not limited to: cleaning exhibits, providing medicine to animals that need it, creating enrichment items that are mentally and physically stimulating, training behaviors that will allow vet visits to go smoothly and be less stressful for the animals, and spending time with the animals to strengthen their bond.

Thank you to all the zookeepers at Micke Grove Zoo, you guys are truly amazing!💚

Back in the spring, we began creating a pollinator garden in our zoo. One of the animals we hoped to attract to the garden is the Monarch Butterfly as they make their way to and from Mexico.

We would like to thank Monarch Watch, an education, conservation, and research program based at the University of Kansas, for donating 64 Narrow Leaf Milkweed seeds!

Thanks to them, and our volunteers, we are making great progress towards creating a beautiful pollinator garden for animals and zoo guests to enjoy!

If you would like to help our zoo's pollinator garden, we are taking donations of the following California-native wildflowers:

-Blanket Flower
-Purple Cone Flower
-Sneezeweed
-Black-eyed Susan
-Yarrow
-Showy Milkweed
-Purple top Vervain
-Cleveland Sage
-White Sage

It's finally time to reveal our newest zoo animal! 🦎

Many of you have guessed correctly: meet Sherbet! Our new Madagascar Giant Day Gecko.

Sherbet will be in our viewing shelter, next to our Golden Mantella Frogs. We ask that when you come see him that you don't tap on the glass or use loud voices.

Please keep in mind that he is very shy and it will take some time for him to adjust to his new home!
