With Foxtail season upon us, we wanted to spread awareness about the harm they can cause your pets.
What is a foxtail? A foxtail is a spikelet or cluster of grass that disperses it's seed as a unit.
These seeds can become embedded in your pet's paws, nose, eyes, ears, mouth, and even be ingested. When embedded foxtails are left untreated they can cause discharge, abscesses, swelling, pain, and in rare cases they can even become fatal.
Signs your pet may have an embedded foxtail can be sneezing with or without bloody discharge, shaking head/pawing at ears/head tilt, excessively licking paws/small puncture site also know as a foxtail tract/limping, coughing/gagging, inflammation and so on.
Though there are times when you can catch a foxtail before they become embedded, if you think your pet has come contact with foxtails and is now showing symptoms please schedule an appointment to see your veterinarian.
