Kidding season is almost upon us, and one of the most common questions we get is "Doc, when is the best time to dehorn my goats?" Below we explain our current recommendation:

When goat kids are born they have tissue called "horn buds", which are the germinal cells that quickly develop into horns as the kid grows. By only 2 weeks of age the buds have already attached to the skull and are well on their way to becoming horns. Knowing that, we recommend removing horn buds at 3-5 days of age. At that age the horn bud is not yet attached to the skull, making removal more successful, and also less stressful for the kids.

If you have questions regarding disbudding or would like to make an appointment, please give us a call (608) 592-7755

This week we would like to recognize our certified veterinary technician and assistants for all their hard work! From all the work they do on the farm to make herd healths run smoothly, to back at the clinic with inpatients where they play a vital role in our high-quality care. If you see CVT Peyton, or our tech assistants Delaney, Madeline, or Alex on-farm or at the clinic, be sure to thank them for all they do!

In this article published in Hoard's Dairyman, Dr. Terri Olivette explains why lung ultrasound is a worth while tool to implement on your farm. Several of our livestock veterinarians are trained in this and have routine scheduled herds that they perform this service for with successful results.

Dr. Terri Ollivett breaks down why lung scanning is worth the cost in this Hoard's Dairyman column. Bottom line: up-front costs = long-term gains for calves and your herd.
