Dewclaws have been a topic of debate among dog breeders lately, but it’s time to set the record straight: they serve no functional purpose in working or hunting dogs!! Despite the common claim that dewclaws help dogs “grab hold of the ground” or improve their grip, this simply isn’t true. Dewclaws do not enhance a dog’s stability, traction, or overall performance in the field. In fact, they often become a liability, especially for active dogs who are at risk of tearing or injuring them during work.

As dog trainers and owners of working breeds, we see the consequences firsthand. Removing dewclaws reduces the risk of injury and allows these dogs to perform at their best without unnecessary hindrances. If you’re serious about breeding dogs for work, whether it’s hunting, herding, or protection, it’s essential to prioritize their safety and performance. Dewclaws serve no functional purpose, and removing them can help avoid painful accidents down the line. Let’s focus on what’s best for our dogs’ well-being and longevity.

So please, REMOVE THEM AT BIRTH!!
