This morning, Boss and I had the opportunity to speak to a great group of students! I presented the gospel and Boss illustrated it along the way through his obedience and abilities to "search" for things. Thanks Adrienne N Tim Barbee for the invitation!

Remember, if you tell your dog to do something, you also need to tell them when they are free to stop doing that something.

Example- when you tell your dog to sit, tell him when his sit is over. Don’t allow Him/HER to decide that. YOU are in charge!

Work obedience in many scenarios!

This video shows a little of what I was walking about when I posted about ignoring your dog. He started off with a lot of tail wagging because he knew we were up to something but you will get the point when you watch.

Ignore your dog!

Most of us need to learn the importance of ignoring our dog from time to time. We are guilty of being OVER affectionate, which can lead to all kinds of problems.

If you’re tired of you dog always following you each and every time you get up to go to the bathroom or to go in the kitchen, it might be because you’re talking to them too much or even simply looking at them too much. You’re communicating to them that you want something from them.

By ignoring them, you can teach them that it’s not always about them, you don’t always want something from them. Ignore them and let them begin to understand that they don’t need to move every time you move.

Long distance recall with boss!

11/01/2023

Poppy has been here with me for seven days learning her recall (come command.)

I trained her with an e-collar, but she has learned it so well that we don’t have to use the e-collar much at all now. It’s there for the “just in case” scenarios.

Training tip.

Never give a command you cannot enforce.

An example would be, teaching your dog to come when called. Use a leash so that your dog doesn’t have the option of not complying.

10/25/2023

Tip for marker conditioning. Use your dog’s regular food if you can.

Poppy is with us this week for some e-collar training. Her owner wants to be able to take her hiking off leash so she needs a reliable recall. The e-collar is the best tool for the job.

Clicker conditioning.

To condition your dog to the clicker, simply click, then reach for your treats and give her a treat. One click 🟰 one treat.

Do this over and over until the dog begins to snap his head when he hears the sound of the clicker. It’s important to click, THEN, reach for the treat, then deliver the treat.

What do you do when your dog messes up?

This video shows what I did when Boss wasn’t coming into the heel position correctly. He messed up the first two times. That told me he didn’t quite understand what I was wanting him to do. I kept calm and decided to help him understand on the third time.

Notice that I did not reward him the first two times when he messed up. That would have reinforced the incomplete behavior. On the third time I made it easier for him by helping him succeed. I rewarded that. That should leave a picture in his mind of what gets rewarded and what doesn’t.

One of Evie’s big issues when she came to me was that she would not listen around the chickens in the pen at her home. This is the first lesson of working recall around a chicken. It went much better than I expected!
