Why does our vet recommend Tums for our pregnant and nursing mommas? No, it's not because of heart burn. 😉 It's because of calcium! In their pregnancy journey, our mommas use a lot of calcium to help grow these cute little pups! But using so much calcium can come with its risks. Especially during the first 3 weeks or so of nursing, the puppies can drain the mom of calcium. If her calcium levels drop too low, she can develop eclampsia, a life-threatening condition. So, to prevent this from ever happening, we give our girls 2 antacids every 12 hours! (Again, vet recommended 😉) Antacids like Tums are actually just calcium carbonate, so they're a great source of calcium for the mommas and are safe when used appropriately! 27 Golden Retrievers... not quite 101 Dalmatians, but the story behind it is still pretty good. 😉 • • • Three days after Sunny and Myla had their two litters of 6 and 7, a friend reached out to us. Her golden had given birth to 11 puppies the same day Sunny had, but momma wasn't doing good. She was having some birth complications, making it so she was unable to feed all 11 puppies as much as they needed. Our friends were trying to bottle feed all 11, but they were loosing weight fast. We had them bring the puppies over, and Myla and Sunny immediately took them in as their own! Due to momma needing time for herself to recover, Sunny and Myla took on the 11 puppies as their foster moms, making 12 for each mom! And... Sunny and Myla have done so amazing with all of this! All 24 puppies are growing healthy and strong, and once the litter of 11 is weened off of milk and are deemed healthy enough, they will be returned back to their momma. We're happy to say that their momma is back home and recovering well! Our birthday girl woke up to the BEST surprise! Myla had her puppies the night of June 24th, and then Sunny had puppies on June 25th!
