On Sunday November 12th, I received The Presidents Award from The MPKS for outstanding dedication and service to the Pond & Koi Hobby And Its Members. I guess it's for doing all those service calls for all those years.

Pond Clean Out
We will be cleaning out our 27,000 gallon Koi pond. We need help removing rocks as well. If you help, you can have koi for free. If you just want to purchase fish, we will have them for $10.00 each. I cannot promise fish for everyone, but we will be getting rid of around. 75 - 100 Koi.

Stopped to see the BIG GIRLS yesterday. This pond is not on Pond Tour 2023. First time in many years.

My reagents were 2 years old. New reagents are around $200. Might as well get the new test kit. Got the newest version of the LaMotte Fish farm 9. If I come over to do a sick fish call, my water values have to be correct.

Experimenting with a different fertilizer this season. Nectar For the Gods 'One Shot' is a 3-10-0 granular fertilizer I found at the hydroponics store. Added a 4 lb bag to the lotus bog this season. I still used the big Highland Rim tablets at 10-26-10. Will see how many blooms the 2023 season gives me.

This koi was found in the pond dead. Owner did an exam. Found some red spots on the body and a gill that did not look right. Appears to be fluke damage to me. They are treating with praziquantel today.

These PH meters are under $20 now. Most clients get them from Amazon. You want to test PH twice in one day. Once in the AM, then again in the PM. Readings should match. If there is more than .3 difference, the PH is bouncing. Dangerous for your koi. It will make them sick.

All rain is acidic. Has a PH 6. Rain will turn good water bad. I always have baking soda handy. One pound of baking soda, in 1,000 gallons of pond water, will raise alkalinity by 70 points.

My 10 # bag of Kenzen arrived yesterday afternoon. Water temperature was 67F. The koi were so happy to eat!

This is the only (live) beneficial bacteria I use. If you want/need to jump start a system with fish in it, use this stuff. Works like a charm.

My Tsurumi 2 PU died. Did not catch it in time, so my water turned green. My koi are fine. Called Trurumi America (20 minutes from the house) and found it is still in warranty. They did not have a replacement in stock until Thursday.

Added water to the pond yesterday. Water temperature was 55F. If this weather persists, I may have to start feeding the koi.

From back in 2019. Lots of clients like it when I say they can help do the spring clean up. Was not ready for a baby in a playpen, but things worked out.

Stopped in Naperville yesterday. Always fun to go see the BIG girls. Many of these Japanese koi are 30". Water is heated to 70F.

The Chicago New Year is bringing rain and melting snow. Rain and snow melt will use up alkalinity and drive PH down. Very important to add baking soda. One pound of baking soda, in 1,000 gallons of water, will raise alkalinity 70 points.

Going through old photos I found this mermaid bronze. She has a new home now. The new owner did not like the pond and filled it in. Real shame!

The old client moved and now the new owner has hired me. Showed them how to clean the filters and take care of the water. Pond leaks so that needs to be repaired.
