Happy Sunday! The anemone have finally started to bloom!🤞🏻 Hoping they keep blooming despite the hot weather we’ve been having. ☀️Anemone prefer cooler temperatures and tend to stop growing once temps are consistently above 70 degrees. These have been planted out in the garden since March. I’ll take these blooms any chance I can get because they’re so colorful and beautiful!

Tonight’s tulip harvest! 🌷Message me if you’d like a bouquet of fresh picked tulips! 🌷

These may not look like much now, but that’s because I’ve picked them at a stage that gives YOU the best and longest vase life- before they’ve fully opened.

The very first Anemone bud of this year! I can’t wait until it blooms! 🤩 I started anemone and ranunculus corms indoors mid-February and planted them outside in mid-March. Ranunculus and anemone prefer cool temperatures and stop growing and blooming when temperatures reach to about 75 degrees. They prefer the cold weather but they cannot survive the cold of our winters here in WI. I cover them with frost cloth in a caterpillar tunnel when temperatures are below 27 degrees. These flowers are a lot of work but the reward for all that work is their beautiful blooms. ☺️

The tulips and narcissus are starting to bloom! Oohh I wish you could smell this bouquet through the internet. The fancy tulips don’t have a scent, but those two stems of narcissus in there smell HEAVENLY! The scent is similar to lilacs.

I did more soil block making and seed starting this weekend. 🌱 For those wondering how soil blocks are made, here’s a short video I took. I loved being able to work outside and hear the birds chirping! 🐦‍⬛

It may look like I made brownies here, but these are the very first seed starts of the year. 🙌🏻 🌸 This is a method called soil blocking, where you plant your seeds in these tiny compressed blocks of soil. This method allows me to start many seeds at once while only taking up a fraction of the space that standard seed trays would. Most of my flowers were started this way last year. I’d typically fill this entire tray with soil blocks but I only had a few (180) of these late spring/early summer flowers that I needed to start right now. Any guesses as to what seeds I started today? 🌱🌼

What's in a name?

We have changed the common name of our Lupine – previously sold as “Wild Lupine.” We are clarifying which species we offer:
SUNDIAL LUPINE is Lupinus perennis subsp. perennis. This exact species is historically native and used to be prolific around the eastern perimeter of the U.S. The confusion stems from the fact that other species are often called “Wild Lupine.”

One particularly problematic species is Lupinus polyphyllus, or Western Lupine, which is native to the west coast but has been introduced in gardens across the country.

Because Western Lupine (L. polyphyllus) is a larger, showier plant and spreads rapidly, it has infiltrated the seed market as “Wild Lupine” and incorrectly as “Lupinus perennis.” It has been proven to be very aggressive, especially in the Upper Midwest and Northeast regions. Beyond its ability to spread and overwinter, L. polyphyllus is upsetting the balance of local wildlife in the eastern half of the U.S. – most notably for the federally endangered Karner Blue Butterfly whose only larval host is Sundial Lupine. The Western Lupine is NOT a larval host for this beloved species, despite the marketing push; according to the National Park Service, the foliage is poisonous. Any Karner Blues that mistakenly lay their eggs on this plant have doomed their caterpillars. Sadly, L. polyphyllus readily hybridizes with Sundial Lupine; the resulting plants are also inhospitable.

It may be winter ❄️ but I’m thinking Spring! I’m patiently waiting for all the tulips to bloom. 🌷 I’ve planted over 1,000 tulip bulbs for spring.

I’ll have subscription spring bouquet orders available soon! 💐

In the meantime, here’s a peek at some of the varieties I’ve planted. 👀
