Pattern games in dog training establish predictable and reliable sequences of behaviors or actions, helping dogs to learn tasks by following a predetermined pattern of cues.
These repetitive, predictable patterns serve as a reliable framework for dogs, especially when faced with distractions or situations that might unsettle, excite, or draw their attention.
Within these structured games, dogs anticipate the next steps, allowing them to refocus on their task even when encountering triggers or novel stimuli.
These versatile pattern games assist dogs in navigating through various scenarios, such as handling scary triggers, encountering new and exciting individuals (humans or dogs), or maneuvering through crowded spaces.
Some games involve stationary exercises, while others incorporate movement, contributing to a holistic training approach.
Pattern games in dog training offer a foundation for numerous training scenarios, each contributing uniquely to a dog's learning and focus abilities.

Encouraging behavior through rewards, particularly in animals, utilizes food as a powerful tool to facilitate learning and diminish fear or anxiety. This method leverages dopamine, a neurotransmitter essential for reward-based learning, movement regulation, and emotional responses in the brain.

Training alongside Sadie has been an incredible journey! We’ve fostered so many dogs, but somehow, it’s always so different. This sweet and mischievous girl has been a joy and a little devil! I like devils though, so I’m here for it!
Our focus involves fundamental training, addressing issues like jumping, mouthing, biting, barking, door rushing, and cat chasing. At just five months old and having moved through five homes already, these behaviors are expected for a puppy. We aim to equip her with exceptional skills to ensure we send her to her new home with fabulous skills!

Hosting workshops for dog business professionals has been an absolute delight! We've had the privilege of collaborating with outstanding dog walkers and pet experts at Petwaggin several times a year, teaching valuable skills that help them be the best at their craft!
Our recent workshop focused on breaking down a visit and empowering the new team to create a calming experience for anxious or overly excited dogs. They learn practical techniques to encourage desirable behaviors while steering clear of reinforcing undesirable ones.
The dedication and expertise displayed by the Petwaggin team continue to impress me. Whether you need a dog walker, pet sitter, transportation services, or engaging enrichment visits, they are your go-to professionals!

The happiest place on earth for my dogs.
I have two amazing pups, both with reactivity; I took years to understand and accept their behavior.
I’m beyond thankful for both of them, their behavior, and their sweet little souls.
Decompression walks involve letting our dogs roam freely in their natural surroundings, allowing them to explore and express their innate behaviors.
The priority for our dogs is meeting their daily needs and providing chances for them to be dogs.
This is where my dogs feel entirely secure and seldom exhibit any signs of reactivity.

Okay, here's the scoop on breaking down the door behavior in dogs.
Dogs being dogs, they'll do all sorts of things—jump, bark, bolt out the door. That's just their natural vibe.
What we're trying to teach them is more of our human-style behavior.
Think about it: the outside world is like the ultimate playground for dogs. They've been cooped up inside, itching for some action, and it’s game on when that door cracks open!
So, we’re up to showing Benito how reinforcing it can be to chill out, hang by the door, and wait for his Momma's cue. That way, he knows it's all good and safe to head out.

Building Better Bonds: Why Force-Free Puppy Training & Socialization Matters 🏆🐾
At Underdogs, we believe that the foundation of a happy, healthy, and well-adjusted dog begins with force-free training and socialization. Here's why it's so important:
1️⃣ Trust & Science: Force-free training techniques create a strong bond between you and your pup based on trust and positive reinforcement. Mark & Reward training is a science-based teaching method that simplifies communicating with the dog with positive reinforcement.
2️⃣ Fear-Free Learning: Our force-free approach ensures your pup feels safe and comfortable during training. No intimidation or fear – just fun and effective learning!
3️⃣ Socialization: Socialization is a vital part of your pup's development. Our classes introduce your pup to new puppies, humans, sounds, and a new environment, helping them become confident and well-socialized companions.
4️⃣ Behavioral Bliss: Early training and socialization reduce the likelihood of future behavioral issues and set your puppy up to be a well-adjusted adult.
5️⃣ Lifelong Skills: What your pup learns here will stay with them forever. These skills aren't just for puppyhood; they're the building blocks for a lifetime of happiness together.

many of you were fascinated with the hide-and-seek game we shared in our stories, so I thought I’d elaborate on why I do this! It’s fun for Bowie and Billy, but I also do this to meet his daily needs.
Engaging in nose work doesn’t have to resemble the typical canine sports or search and rescue activities. A dog doesn't need to excel to reap the enriching benefits. Nose work involves the dog identifying a specific odor and then locating its source. Crucially, it provides both mental and physical stimulation. This activity can be the perfect game to engage a dog’s mind and body.
It's fascinating to note that dogs possess a remarkable 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses, a stark contrast to humans with only 60 million. Dogs essentially "see-smell," meaning their world perception heavily relies on their sense of smell, an inherent part of their genetic makeup.
Even if a dog like Bowie is visually impaired and has some neurological damage due to an early illness, it doesn't diminish their ability to use these innate olfactory skills. The daily hide-and-seek game we play with Bowie is fun and an excellent confidence-building exercise. This happens to be one of Bowie's most cherished games!

Step one for successful loose leash walking: desensitize the leash. Wondering why? Well, the moment you reach for the harness, you've signaled to your dog that it's walk time, and that's when behaviors often kick in.
If your walks are smooth, keep scrolling. But if they're not, this is where you make a change!
For those sticking around, if your walks aren't going well, you might notice some 'excitement' behaviors when you grab the harness. It might not just be excitement—it could be arousal, fear, anxiety, whatever it is; let’s focus on helping our furry friends relax. We’re laying the foundation for more relaxed and enjoyable walks by desensitizing at the start of our walk routine.
