Cappuccino enjoying his banana flavored de-wormer 🍌
Cappuccino got to enjoy his special treat of banana flavored de-wormer during his first-ever vet visit! 🍌
De-wormers are recommended for all puppies and kittens 8 weeks of age or older. 2 doses are strongly recommended because the first dose eliminates adult and alive worms, while the second dose eliminates any leftover eggs or hatchlings 🥚
Our dewormer is safe for their sensitive stomachs and targets the 4 common types of parasites, like roundworms and hookworms, that usually get passed on to a litter of puppies or kittens from their infected mother.
The great news is that a dewormer is included in your puppy and kitten package! Schedule your fur baby's first visit by giving us a call ☎️: (562)426-4066

Bixby Animal Clinic wishes a Happy Lunar New Year to all those who celebrate! 🧧🧨🐉
Lunar New Year is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. This event is celebrated by numerous different Asian cultures with various traditions, sometimes on different dates. Commonly known as the Spring Festival in China, Lunar New Year is about a sixteen-day celebration. 🏮
Commonly, family from multiple generations gather to enjoy a large dinner to enjoy delicious and lucky dishes, gift red envelopes (hóngbāo (红包) in Mandarin or lai see (利事) in Cantonese) with money as a symbol of good luck, light fireworks to ring in the new year that can symbolize warding off a legendary monster, and end the festivities with a Lantern Festival which can symbolize letting go of your past self as you enter the new year. 🧧🥮
Wishing you and your family success and good fortune this year of the Dragon! ✨🐉

Ever wondered how we check for scratches, ulcers, or other defects in the eye? 🤔👀
We use a fluorescein stain! This stain can be used to detect injuries to the cornea, which is the clear, thin layer of tissue that covers the front of the eye. Because the cornea is transparent to allow for sight, it makes it incredibly difficult to detect scratches or injuries!
A fluorescein stain is a yellow-tinted dye that glows under black light, which is used to temporarily dye the cornea in order to detect injuries more easily. If there are no injuries, the dye will not stick to the eye. 🚫 However, if there is a scratch, ulcer, or defect on the cornea, the dye sticks to the injured area, making it visible. ✅
This painless test is a quick way to detect how serious the injury may be and it only takes a few minutes! ⏱️

⚠️ Content Warning: Foxtail in Eye Removal ⚠️
Kobe presented to us with a swollen, painful, left eye with ocular discharge. His eye became so swollen it was barely visible. Numbing drops and an eye stain were administered to thoroughly check the eye and surrounding area.
As soon as the numbing took effect, Kobe was able to open his eye enough for Dr. Currier to see the very tip of a foxtail! 😱 She immediately got to work and once his eye area was fully numb, she removed the foxtail, bringing instant relief to Kobe!
Foxtails are spiked seed clusters found on some weeds and wild grasses. They become abundant from late spring to early fall, and we see a large uptick in pets needing foxtail removal. Foxtails have a unique tendency to burrow into soft tissues due to their barbed surface, which allows them to dig deeper and prevents them from coming out. 🌾
Foxtails are typically seen embedded in paws, noses, and mouths. They can also be lodged in ears, inhaled, swallowed, travel inside the body, and, in Kobe's case, get embedded in the eye.
Here are a few things we recommend to avoid foxtails:
✅ Keep your pet leashed when going on walks
✅ Stay on the main path when going on walks
✅ Avoid letting your pet run through open fields of tall grass
✅ Perform a full body inspection after every walk or every time your pet wants to come back inside
✅ Consider a “foxtail cut" and keep your pet's coat short so foxtails are less likely to get caught and are more visible
It's important to be vigilant because sometimes foxtails are very hard to see, if at all. Anytime your pet is lethargic, has a wound that will not heal, or is limping, it is always important to seek veterinary care as soon as possible as @yvetteeeu did! It could possibly be a pesky foxtail!
