CURLY COATED DOGS are considered to be light shedders. They do shed, but not as much as other coat types. Nevertheless they are easily tangled & matted if not properly combed out at home in between the grooming sessions. If pet owners want to keep the coat long, it’s recommended to that the dog is groomed frequently, at least 5-6 weeks professionally, as well as brushed daily at home. 🐾✂️🐩 🐾✂️🐩 📍

HOW DO MATS DEVELOP? (Clump of tangled hair)
- Top coarse hair tangle with the undercoat becoming a snarl clump. (can cause to pull on the skin It can be painful)
- Certain coat types develop mats, while others do not. - FRICTION : coat that rubs against each other like the neck with the collar or parts of the body that rub against each other.
- MOISTURE: if coat begins to tangle any moisture/water can exacerbates matting & become extremely tight. - DIRT DANDER & DEBRIS: leaves burrow & foxtails can lodge in coat & skin can bind the coat. - STATIC: Cling binds hair. - COMPRESSION: Dog consonantally laying down. “What can I do as a dog owner at home to prevent them?” - are the most asked question from clients when they are faced with high de -matting fees $ or shaving the coat down short.
- Ask your groomer what coat type/ length of your dog has & if they are more prone to matting? - Brush at home focus on neck, base of the tail, behind the ears & underside of the front/back legs. - Keep the coat dry. If bathed at home or exposed to water condition the coat, dry the coat & combed out. - Remove debris if picks up burrows, leaves or fox tails off the coat with a comb. These can hide on legs between toes after walks. - If your dog is elderly, injured, disabled or inactive are more susceptible to tangles focus on brushing the area where there is constant compression. This adorable pup in the picture was matted under that curly thick coat. With proper humane/safe de- matting techniques we were able to save her coat from a shave down. Small breed dogs are considered senior at age 10-12yrs old or older. Some signs they can display are physical & mental aging. Due to their age they do require more time to safely complete the grooming , patience & modifications of the grooming process. Choosing a well experienced groomer with years of experience is key to insuring your dog will be properly handled/supported when they can have mobility issues, nose, eyes, mouth issues, Breathing & circulation issues. Vision & hearing problems. Skin lumps & Ulcers on the body. Most importantly how to spot these issues & immediately communicate with the pet owner of any concerns to get proper Veterinarian consultation.

🌈Kiko I been working with her for 5 years. She has a housemate who the owner mention that he kept licking her ear. When observing her ear she had excessive ear wax buildup & abnormal odor. Ear wax Gray water discharge indicative of abnormal. I notify the owner Kiko must see Veterinary for proper diagnosis & treatment. There is many reason why your dog could be having ear disorders. Some signs you can watch out for at home are 1.Head shaking 2. Discharge from ear canal 3. Swelling of the ear flap 4. Difficulty hearing 5. Loss of balance 6.Scratching /pawing /rubbing at ear. 7. Sensitive to the ear. Kiko has dropped ears they hang down & inside hair growth causing lack of air circulation to the ear canal & trap moisture can all lead to ear disorder. Dogs with dropped ears are more prone to ear problems. As a dog groomer is important to observe & recognize skin /medical disorders notify the owners so they can seek Veterinary treatment. Ear problems can be very painful & if infection is present it could cause premature deftness if not treated.
