The renowned Italian diver, Enzo Maiorca, was exploring the warm waters of Syracuse while talking to his daughter Rossana, who was waiting for him on the boat. Just as he was about to submerge, he felt a slight touch on his back. Turning around, he saw a dolphin. He quickly realized that the animal was not there to play but to communicate something important.
The dolphin dived, and Enzo followed its path.
About 12 meters deep, another dolphin was trapped in an abandoned net.
Maiorca quickly signaled for Rossana to hand him the diving knives. Within minutes, they managed to free the dolphin. Weak and exhausted, it surfaced, letting out a sound that Enzo described as a "nearly human cry." Dolphins can hold their breath for up to 10 minutes—after that, they drown.
Still disoriented, the freed dolphin was closely monitored by Enzo, Rossana, and its companion. Then came the surprise: it was a female, and she soon gave birth to a calf.
The male swam around them and, stopping in front of Enzo, gently touched his cheek as if giving him a kiss—a gesture of gratitude—before disappearing into the deep waters.
Concluding his account, Maiorca stated: "Until humans learn to respect and communicate with the animal world, they will never understand their true role on this Earth."
This episode reminds us of the importance of paying attention to the signs that life gives us.
