❓Do miniature horses need dental care❓

YES!! Though many are not ridden, miniature horses have the same size and number of teeth shoved into a tiny oral cavity. This makes them more predisposed to retained baby teeth, malocclusions, and periodontal disease. In fact, one study showed that 95% of miniature horses on oral exam had one form of dental disease!

Plus, our vets and techs just LOVE their post-sedation snuggles ❤️

🦷Don't forget to take advantage of our dental promo for August- $25 off dental exam and float including basic sedation!🦷

🌞🌅😎July is National UV Safety Month!! 🌞🕶️🌤️

Protecting your horses against the sun in the summer months is critical. Just like humans, horses can also develop sunburns. Horses with white coats and markings are the most susceptible to burns and skin irritation.

Photosensitization is another light-induced skin condition, that can often be mistaken for sunburn. Photosensitivity occurs when there is a presence of photodynamic agents in the horse’s body. This can be due to a number of things, but the most common is the ingestion of toxic plants. When the horse’s skin is exposed to UV rays these agents can become activated, leading to dermatitis (inflammation of the skin), ulceration, hair loss, and in severe cases, tissue necrosis.

Tips to help keep your horse comfortable in the sun:

☀️Apply sunscreen daily to areas of white hair, especially around the nose, mouth, ears and eyes.

☀️Provide adequate shade so your horse can have a break from the sun and heat.

☀️Transition to nighttime turnout in the summertime. Less sun, less bugs, and cooler temps!

☀️UV fly masks that cover the horse’s nose, ears and muzzle are a great option to prevent burning, as well as UV fly sheets if your horse has a light colored coat.

This sweet mare got a little overzealous in turnout the other day and came in with a small laceration above her eye. While a cut such as this one appears trivial, they can easily become infected, swollen, or worse if not treated in a timely manner. If a wound is not evaluated shortly after it occurs, the veterinarian will likely be unable to place sutures and the healing process can be significantly delayed.

This owner did an excellent job of spotting this laceration quickly and contacting MPE. Pictured here is technician Olivia getting the patient prepared for suture repair with diligent scrubbing and an appropriate hairdo. The last pictures show the wound at the time of suture removal, almost completely healed.

What are Dr. Fugaro and Dr. Weisberg up to?? 👀👀 Do you recognize the procedure in these photos? 🩺📸

This horse's owner first noticed something was wrong when the older gelding was seen dribbling urine and had urine staining on his hind legs. Upon further investigation it became clear that this horse has a condition known as sabulous cystitis.

Sabulous cystitis is an inflammatory condition that occurs when there is a buildup of sediment and sludge in the bladder. The sediment irritates the bladder walls, making urination painful for the horse. This condition affects primarily older geldings and causes dribbling of urine and incontinence. While the cause of sabulous cystitis is not well understood, it is sometimes seen as the result of neurologic dysfunction or chronic back pain.

This gelding had a cystoscopy (scope of the urinary tract) performed and a bladder lavage to remove the sediment. He was treated with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. These photos show the sediment retrieved from the bladder, the sludge adhered to the bladder wall on cystoscopy, and Dr. Fugaro and Dr. Weisberg having way too much fun on a Friday morning.

🔥TIPS FOR DEALING WITH THIS WEEK'S FORECAST🔥

❌MYTH: Hot horses should be walked until they cool completely.

✅FACT: A study from 2020 determined that the method that results with the quickest return to normal body temperature is stationary with continuous tap water application (2 minutes). Walking alone took the longest time for recovery (25 minutes).

"Cool" hot weather tips! ☀️

The notion that a hot, recently exercised horse needs to walk until they are completely cooled off is a myth. A 2020 study found that out of the five methods tested, the quickest way to return to normal body temperature was stationary with continuous tap water application. This doesn't mean that you should abruptly stop exercise—finish your ride or training session with a slow walk to allow your horse's heart rate and breathing to gradually return to normal, but after that your sweaty, hardworking horse should be offered a cool shower and drinking water (small but frequent amounts) without delay.

Overall, enjoy your summer rides but be aware of signs of heat stress in your horse. When heat and humidity soar, even moderate exercise can push your equine friend's body temperature beyond safe limits! Be sure to contact your veterinarian for more information about heat stroke and for recommendations tailored to your horse's individual situation.

What measures have you taken to reduce fire risks in your barn? 🧯

According to the National Interagency Fire Center, in 2024 there have been 16,940 reported wildfires in the U.S. to date. As we head into the hottest time of the year, make sure your farm has a fire prevention plan and an evacuation strategy in place to keep both horses and people safe.

Check out the graphic for ten fire prevention measures to get you started on the right track to a safer facility. This list is not meant to be exhaustive and we invite you to contact your local fire department and your veterinarian for guidance on designing a prevention and response plan tailored to your specific situation.

Barn fires are the number one local emergency affecting agricultural facilities. They can cause horrific injuries and kill more horses than any other type of disaster, so being prepared is only in your best interest!
