LASER LESSON: Part 4
What equine surgeries are ideal for the CO2 laser?
-Mass/tumor removal
-Surgeries involving tissues that are highly vascular
-Incisions that must be left open to heal and/or closure of the skin is not possible
-Procedures where post-operative pain and nerve sensitivity is of concern

WELCOME TO OUR "MEET THE TEAM" SERIES.
Each week we will re-introduce you to one member of the MPEVS team and share some fun facts.
This week's "Meet the Team" member is Dr. Jess Martin. Here is Dr. Martin riding Bonnie, a 6 year old Quarter Horse, at Willow Brook Farms’s NRHA - National Reining Horse Association competition. Dr. Martin is looking forward to cow horse competitions in the future with her young prospect Quarter Horse, Nate!
LASER LESSON - Part 3
Why use a CO2 laser for surgery?
The CO2 laser is designed for the meticulous nature of soft tissue surgery. The laser light is absorbed by tissues with higher concentrations of fluid (water), creating a thermal reaction within the cells raising the temperature almost instantaneously well beyond the boiling point. This laser-tissue interaction will precisely vaporize the tissues creating a concentrated incision (photo-ablation) while simultaneously sealing blood vessels (coagulation) and nerve endings. Consequently, these surgeries have significantly reduced bleeding, decreased surgical site edema and swelling, and reduced post-operative pain for the patient. Given the surgical properties of the CO2 laser, the post-operative incision is biologically sealed (even if not stitched closed) and sterile. (WARNING - graphic content)
Thank you to all of our veterinary technicians, past and present, for your hard work and dedication. Your skills, character, and commitment to veterinary medicine do not go unnoticed! This week especially, we thank you for all that you do.
