🎄The holidays are a time for joy, but it's important to remember that our pets might experience this time a little differently. With decorations, treats, and guests, our homes become a wonderland of potential hazards for our furry friends. Here are a few tips to help be mindful of their safety during this exciting season.

𝘿𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨

· Christmas trees: Christmas trees can be a tempting target for curious pets. Make sure your tree is secured so it can't be knocked over. Avoid decorating with tinsel, which can be a choking hazard.

· Ornaments: Ornaments can also be a choking hazard, so keep them out of reach of pets. Be careful with glass ornaments, which can shatter and cause injuries.

· Lights: Christmas lights can cause electrical shocks or burns if chewed on. Keep cords out of reach of pets, and consider using battery-operated lights.

𝙁𝙤𝙤𝙙

· Chocolate: Chocolate is poisonous to pets, so keep it out of reach. This includes chocolate coins, advent calendars, and any other chocolate treats.

· Cooked bones: Cooked bones can splinter and cause serious internal injuries. Never give your pet cooked bones, even as a treat.

· Grapes and raisins: Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in pets. Keep them out of reach, and don't let your pet eat any holiday treats that contains them.

𝙂𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙨

· Doors and gates: Make sure all doors and gates are securely closed to prevent your pet from escaping.

· Quiet space: Provide your pet with a quiet space where they can escape the hustle and bustle of Christmas Day.

· Stress: Some pets find Christmas stressful. If your pet seems anxious, try to keep their routine as normal as possible.

𝘼𝙙𝙙𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙩𝙞𝙥𝙨

· Microchip: Make sure your pet is microchipped and that their details are up to date.

· ID tag: Make sure your pet is wearing an ID tag with your name and contact details.

· First aid kit: Keep a pet first aid kit handy in case of accidents.

We hope these tips help you to have a safe and happy Christmas with your pets! 🎄

❄️Brrr... it's getting chilly out there! Here are some cold weather tips to keep your furry friends safe and cozy this season: ❄️

· Limit time outdoors: Even with their fur coats, prolonged exposure to cold temperatures can be dangerous for pets. Keep walks short and sweet, and consider providing extra layers for short-haired breeds or senior pets.

· Wipe paws after walks: Salt and de-icing chemicals can irritate paw pads. Wipe paws with a damp cloth after walks to remove any residue. Consider using paw balm to protect from dryness and cracking.

· Beware of antifreeze: Antifreeze is highly toxic to pets. Clean up any spills immediately and store containers securely out of reach.

· Provide warm shelter: If your pet spends time outdoors, make sure they have a warm, dry shelter that's protected from the wind. Consider adding a heated pet bed or extra blankets for warmth.

· Keep them hydrated: Even in cold weather, pets need access to fresh water. Make sure their water bowl doesn't freeze over.

· Watch for signs of hypothermia: Shivering, lethargy, and weakness can be signs of hypothermia. If you notice any of these symptoms, seek veterinary attention immediately.

Remember, if it's too cold for you, it's probably too cold for your pet! Use common sense and keep them indoors as much as possible during extreme weather conditions.

Hey there, dog lovers! We're here to talk about some common dog behavior problems and how to solve them.

1. Excessive Barking:

· Possible causes: Boredom, anxiety, territoriality, excitement, attention-seeking.
·Solution: Identify the trigger and address it. Provide plenty of exercise and mental stimulation, use positive reinforcement to train "quiet" commands, and consider a dog walker or pet sitter if you're away for long periods.

2. Chewing:

· Possible causes: Teething, anxiety, boredom, curiosity.
· Solution: Provide appropriate chew toys, ensure your dog has enough exercise and mental stimulation, and use a taste deterrent on furniture or other items you don't want them to chew.

3. Jumping:

· Possible causes: Excitement, attention-seeking, lack of training.
· Solution: Teach your dog to sit or greet people politely, ignore jumping behavior, and reward calm behavior with praise and treats.

4. Digging:

· Possible causes: Boredom, anxiety, instinct, seeking cool ground.
· Solution: Provide a designated digging area, ensure your dog has enough exercise and mental stimulation, and consider a dog walker or pet sitter if you're away for long periods.

5. Pulling on the Leash:

· Possible causes: Excitement, lack of training, wanting to explore.
· Solution: Use a front-clip harness or head halter, practice loose-leash walking in a low-distraction environment, and reward your dog for walking calmly by your side.

Remember, consistency and positive reinforcement are key to successful training. If you're struggling with your dog's behavior, don't hesitate to reach out to a certified dog trainer or veterinary behaviorist for help.

Do you have any other questions about dog behavior? Let us know in the comments!

🎁🐶🐱 Did you know December is Safe Toys & Gifts Month for Pets? 'Tis the season for giving, and our furry friends deserve to be showered with love too! But before you stuff those stockings, remember that safety comes first.

Here are a few tips to keep your pets safe this holiday season:

· Size matters: Avoid toys that are too small and can be swallowed or pose a choking hazard.

· Toughness is key: Choose durable toys that can withstand enthusiastic chewing and play. No easily shredded plush toys!

· Beware of dangers: Skip toys with ribbons, strings, or small parts that can be ingested.

· Say no to rawhide: Rawhide can be difficult to digest and pose a choking risk. Opt for safer chew alternatives.

· Food safety: Keep holiday treats out of reach. Chocolate, raisins, and xylitol (found in many sugar-free candies) are toxic to pets.

By following these tips, you can ensure your furry companions enjoy a happy and safe holiday season filled with fun and festive cheer!

🍗 Thanksgiving is a time for delicious food, family gatherings, and maybe even some football. But while we're enjoying the festivities, it's important to remember that not all Thanksgiving foods are safe for our furry friends.

Here are some holiday hazards to keep away from your pets:

· Turkey Bones: Cooked turkey bones can splinter and cause serious internal injuries to your pet.

· Fatty Foods: Foods high in fat, like gravy and turkey skin, can cause pancreatitis in pets.

· Onions, Garlic, and Chives: These ingredients can damage your pet's red blood cells and lead to anemia.

· Chocolate: Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to pets and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and even death.

· Yeast Dough: Raw yeast dough can rise in your pet's stomach, causing bloating and potentially life-threatening complications.

Tips to keep your pets safe:

· Keep all food out of reach of pets. Store leftovers in secure containers and dispose of trash properly.

· Give your pets their own special Thanksgiving treats. There are many pet-safe recipes available online.

If you think your pet has ingested something toxic, contact us, Colorado Animal Specialty and Emergency, or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center immediately.

By following these tips, you can help ensure that both you and your furry friends have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving!
