Blue Star Farms

Blue Star Farms Blue Star Farms is committed to the training of top quality sport horses and lessons for the rider, Kristin has a B.S.

Blue Star Farms owner and trainer, Kristin Jacob, has been passionate about horses since she was 5 years old. From an early age, Kristin Jacob has competed on the A-rated hunter/jumper circuit and has shown up through the Grand Prix level on the West Coast. She has competed and won ribbons, championships, and circuit championships at prestigious horse shows across the country including the Colorad

o Summer Circuit, HITS Thermal, HITS Arizona, and The National Horse Show and has piloted multiple horses to USEF Horse of the Year and CHJA Year-End awards and championships. degree in Geology from Sonoma State University and a Ph.D. in Geochemistry from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Although Kristin has enjoyed considerable show ring success, she has felt that a deeper understanding of the horse was missing from that world. In 2013, Kristin met exceptional horsewoman, Mindy Bower, who opened up for her an entirely new approach – one of true respect, understanding, and willing partnership between horse and rider. In addition to continuing her show career, Kristin has strived to learn all that she can from Mindy, and most importantly from the horse. It is Kristin’s goal to integrate the underlying horsemanship principles and philosophies with show jumping and to methodically build confidence, trust, and communication between horse and rider. There are very few people in the English disciplines who follow these methods and it is Kristin’s hope to be able to share this approach and philosophy with the Hunter/Jumper community. As a dedicated student of the horse, it is imperative to Kristin that she continuously collaborate with her mentors and take every opportunity to grow and improve her own riding and horsemanship. She continues to work with Helen Gould of Blue Cloud Farms, along with several other top Hunter/Jumper trainers who have helped to bring her along and have imparted to her their knowledge and experience at the higher levels of show jumping throughout the years. Mindy is in the process of handing down the extraordinary gift of horsemanship to Kristin, as her mentors have handed down to her, and it is Kristin’s hope to be able to pass on this gift to those who desire to better understand and deepen their relationship with their horse. Kristin also attends several Buck Brannaman clinics per year and encourages her clients to participate or audit. Kristin is open to working with any horse and rider but places emphasis on those who have ambitions to compete on the “A” Hunter/Jumper circuit.

Blue Star Farms had a great book club meeting this past weekend! The book we read was The Rise of Superman by Steven Kotler. This book was an inspiration to realize what is possible to attain in both athletic sport and our daily lives. The stories shared in the book kept the reader on the edge of their seat while drawing one in to the state of mind of elite athletes. We found that to achieve the precision and performance needed to push our limits, one enters an optimal state of consciousness called flow where fear centers are shut down, senses heightened, and time slows way down. The book inspired readers to stretch their boundaries, live creative lives, and explore the tremendous possibility that we all posses. This is directly applicable to show ring performance and being in the moment with our horses in all that we do with them.

Blue Star Farms riders and friends had a fantastic educational evening learning about equine nutrition with Formula 707. Melanie Martin came to our farm to present on and educate us on the basics of nutrition and built up to feeding of elite equine athletes. Participants enjoyed dinner, dessert, and sipped on wine during the talk.

Topics of particular interest for our hard working performance horses included ulcer and digestive health, joint and anti-inflammatory support, foot and hoof, and feeding of easy keepers (which many of our warmbloods are).

One of the goals of the talk was to educate owner on what to consider when choosing a supplement company to work with. Points of consideration are research (science backed formulas with proven results), quality standards (NASC seal, manufacturing consistency, traceability), transparency (guaranteed analysis, COAs, clear labeling), support (customer service, rider and owner education).

Not only did riders learn a lot and have a new perspective on equine nutrition, everyone had so much fun visiting together. It was a wonderful evening and Kristin Jacob and Blue Star Farms is so appreciative of their ongoing relationship with Formula 707. Thank you to Formula 707 for helping our hard working performance horses stay in top condition and for providing peace of mind to owners that they are feeding only the very best products to their horses!

Wow! Our summer has been so full at Blue Star Farms! Blue Star Farms riders and a few additional guests had the privilege to participate in a four-day intensive horsemanship clinic with expert horse/mule/stock man, Tom Mowrey at the Keil’s gorgeous ranch in Wheatland, WY.

Clinic participatns worked on ground work, mounted horsemanship exercises, prepared their horse’s for roping, learned and practiced their roping skills, tracked and threw some loops at the Hot Heals (mechanical steer), practiced their stockmanship by moving and sorting cattle, rode across water and mountainous terrain, worked on their horses’ confidence leaving the heard, and all while SMILING!

Tom is a gem and has such a patient approach with humans, horses, and livestock. He builds the “try” in all who work with him. At the end of our very full days we loved discussing horsemanship and listening to Tom’s lifetime of stories working with horses and mules around the dinner table in the ranch house. The camaraderie and excitement for what we were discovering about our horses (and ourselves) was palpable.

We are deeply grateful for Shirley Keil’s generous use of her gorgeous ranch. We thank Matt Keil for providing us with his cattle, time, help, and fun personality. Thank you too, to Justin Cundall for his teaching assistance. We appreciate all the horses and riders who participated. We already have next year on the books!

Blue Star Farms had our book club meeting this weekend. We read “Believe” by Buck Brannaman. This book was an inspiration for what is possible in our relationships with our horses and eachother. Through stories that Buck’s students shared as well as Buck’s insights, we saw how work with our horses is intertwined with the rest of our lives. Whether working with horses or people an approach of kindness, empathy and respect will gain trust, upon which try is built, and finally confidence and self worth are developed. To become a good horseman, one must first work on themselves to develop these qualities. We all have work to do but being in a like-minded, supportive community, with great energy sure makes this journey easier and more fun. A rising tide lifts all boats and what a great tide we are all riding together!

Blue Star Farms is thrilled for Karla Diviesti on her adoption of BLM Mustang, Cannoli, from the Divide Basin herd in Wyoming. Karla has wanted to take the next steps in her horsemanship and has chosen to work with a Mustang as a way to learn and improve her skills. She is also hoping to be an ambassador for these amazing horses and show their versatility for both English and Western riding.

Kristin has continuously been highly impressed as a judge for the Meeker Mustang Makeover with the intelligence, athleticism, and good minds that these horses possess. We are thrilled to welcome Cannoli to Blue Star Farms. Watch for updates, the we think this horse is gonna give our warmbloods a run for their money!

We’d like to give a big thank you to Mantle Ranches () and the Mantle family for being so kind and helpful in the process of adopting this wonderful Mustang. Thank you to the BLM and Cheyenne Frontier Days for hosting this adoption event. We hope that Cannoli is the first of many more Mustangs we adopt!
