Blue Star Farms

Blue Star Farms Blue Star Farms is committed to the training of top quality sport horses and lessons for the rider, Kristin has a B.S.

Blue Star Farms owner and trainer, Kristin Jacob, has been passionate about horses since she was 5 years old. From an early age, Kristin Jacob has competed on the A-rated hunter/jumper circuit and has shown up through the Grand Prix level on the West Coast. She has competed and won ribbons, championships, and circuit championships at prestigious horse shows across the country including the Colorad

o Summer Circuit, HITS Thermal, HITS Arizona, and The National Horse Show and has piloted multiple horses to USEF Horse of the Year and CHJA Year-End awards and championships. degree in Geology from Sonoma State University and a Ph.D. in Geochemistry from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Although Kristin has enjoyed considerable show ring success, she has felt that a deeper understanding of the horse was missing from that world. In 2013, Kristin met exceptional horsewoman, Mindy Bower, who opened up for her an entirely new approach – one of true respect, understanding, and willing partnership between horse and rider. In addition to continuing her show career, Kristin has strived to learn all that she can from Mindy, and most importantly from the horse. It is Kristin’s goal to integrate the underlying horsemanship principles and philosophies with show jumping and to methodically build confidence, trust, and communication between horse and rider. There are very few people in the English disciplines who follow these methods and it is Kristin’s hope to be able to share this approach and philosophy with the Hunter/Jumper community. As a dedicated student of the horse, it is imperative to Kristin that she continuously collaborate with her mentors and take every opportunity to grow and improve her own riding and horsemanship. She continues to work with Helen Gould of Blue Cloud Farms, along with several other top Hunter/Jumper trainers who have helped to bring her along and have imparted to her their knowledge and experience at the higher levels of show jumping throughout the years. Mindy is in the process of handing down the extraordinary gift of horsemanship to Kristin, as her mentors have handed down to her, and it is Kristin’s hope to be able to pass on this gift to those who desire to better understand and deepen their relationship with their horse. Kristin also attends several Buck Brannaman clinics per year and encourages her clients to participate or audit. Kristin is open to working with any horse and rider but places emphasis on those who have ambitions to compete on the “A” Hunter/Jumper circuit.

Blue Star Farms had a great time at Summer in the Rockies week 4! We are proud of all of our horses and riders. Part of what makes horse shows so special is the camaraderie between barn mates. BSF has a tremendously supportive group of riders, husbands, parents, and friends. Great horsemen and true sportsmen are what BSF aims to produce and what a super team of BOTH great horseman and sportsmen we have! We can’t wait for SITR 5!

Blue Star Farms had a super fun and thoughtful book club meeting. The book we discussed was Evidence Based Horsemanship by Dr. Stephen Peters and Martin Black.  The book combines Dr. Peter’s knowledge of the horse from his background as a neuroscientist with Martin Black’s empirical observations from decades of working with horses to show how to get the best outcomes from our horses. It is the science that backs why method based on feel, timing, and balance (the Holy Trinity of good horsemanship) work!

Blue Star Farms riders switched gears and took a trip to Spearfish, South Dakota to work with living legend, Buck Brannaman. The mental and physical softness and harmony Buck achieves with his horses is pure art. Our riders worked on their feel and timing and understanding of their horses. Each horse and rider pair progressed throughout the clinic and every rider got a better feel and understanding for what is possible in the communication and relationship between horse and rider.

It was an absolute pleasure to have Amy Dunkleman and her daughter, Katie, join us. Amy was so generous in sharing her decades of horsemanship experience and perspective. We had fabulous evening discussions about the clinic, horsemanship, and life. The kindness and support from all lifted the entire group. After all, horsemanship should be shared and what a fabulous group and weekend to share the whole experience with!

What an amazing and highly successful week filled with division move-ups, spectacular rounds, and the best and most supportive group of talented riders!

Roxanne Van ’T Kiezelhof and Kristin Jacob - moved up to the 1.30 m. Kristin is trilled with how this young mare jumped in her first 1.30 m class. Kristin will continue to put in the work to develop this horse and is very excited about continuing on the trajectory that they are on! Kristin is very grateful to Paul Rohrbach and for his continued coaching and support!

Selah VDE and Meg Sharament () - This pair had their hunter ring debut and wow, they were stunning! They showed in the 3’6” Amateur Owner Hunters with scores in the 80’s and a solid round in the USHJA Hunter Derby. There’s nothing in the world this pair can’t do - and do incredibly well!

Viscosity and Liz Austin () - moved up to the 1.0 m Adult Jumpers with a super finish! This pair has been showing for the past two week and talk about incredible growth (started in the .85, moved to the .95 and finished in the 1.0 m!). Liz is such a focused student of the sport, has the best attitude towards growth, and is always so kind and thoughtful to her horse and other competitors. She is one to look up to and emulate!

Givaro Longane CSH and Kristin Jacob - had great rounds in the highly competitive 3’ USHJA Hunters. They took home ribbons in huge classes and took home to be blue in the under saddle. Gio was his consistent and kind self and is always a true gentleman and pleasure.

Miraculous Victory and Wren Kelly () - Kristin greatly enjoyed coaching this talented rider and wonderful horse in the 3’6” Performance Hunters and USHJA Hunter Derby. She put in a beautiful, bold ride, reminiscent of a ride in the hunt field with her mare for a 9th place finish in the Derby.

Thank you to Langer Equestrian and for putting on these fabulous shows. We can’t want to come back and show this summer!

✨Viscosity and Liz Austin - what a fun pair to work with and watch! Liz and Victor moved up to the .95 m division with top three placings. They progressed beautifully throughout the week and we can’t wait to see them in the ring next week!

✨AS Dakota and Ally Schult - had lovely rounds in the 18-35 adult eq and hunters with top 5 placings. Ally embodies grit and focused hard work both in and out of the show ring (the key to success in any endeavor!) and took the great opportunity on Dakota to work on consistency in the hunter and eq ring. They progressed beautifully thought the week!

About Blue Star Farms and Kristin Jacob

Kristin Jacob focuses on the training and development of horse and rider for competition on the “A/AA” Hunter/Jumper circuit. Horses are Kristin’s greatest passion, and from an early age she has competed on the Hunter/Jumper circuit through the Grand Prix level on the West Coast. She has won ribbons, show championships, and circuit championships at prestigious horse shows across the country including the Colorado Summer Circuit, HITS Thermal, HITS Arizona, and the National Horse Show, and has piloted and coached multiple horses and riders to USEF Horse of the Year and CHJA Year-End awards and championships.

The unique Blue Star Farms program that Kristin has developed focuses on fostering a willing partnership between horse and rider, with emphasis on good horsemanship and the fundamental elements of the American Forward Riding System. It is Kristin’s goal to methodically build confidence, trust, and communication between horse and rider. Although Kristin’s riders enjoy considerable show ring success, they additionally enjoy rewarding relationships with their horses outside the show ring because of the importance she places on educating her riders in horse care, horse welfare, and horse handling.

As a dedicated student of the horse, Kristin takes every opportunity to improve her own riding and horsemanship skills. Kristin works closely with Helen Gould of Blue Cloud Farms along with several other top Hunter/Jumper professionals who have imparted to her their knowledge and experience at the higher levels of the sport throughout the years. Kristin has also worked closely with exceptional horsewoman Mindy Bower who introduced her to the style of horsemanship made popular by Buck Brannaman. Kristin is open to working with any horse and rider but especially welcomes those who have ambitions to compete on the “A/AA” Hunter/Jumper circuit.

Kristin’s academic education includes a B.S. degree in Geology from Sonoma State University and a Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Colorado, Boulder.
