Mardebri Manor is a Hunter Jumper training facility in Longwood, Florida-just 20 minutes north of Orlando. Debbie Bjerkestrand has been professionally showing and training for over 30 years. Debbie's students are taught proper form in the saddle, along with horsemanship, work ethic all while building lifelong friendships. Debbie has had many students go on to well-recognized riding colleges and become professional riders and trainers themselves.

We had a great first week of summer camp last week. Our campers learned both on and off the horse. Their counselors showed them what tack was needed and why and how to get it all together before putting their pony in cross-ties, as well as teaching them about different parts of the bridle, saddle, and horse. They learned how to groom and tack up their ponies, as well as how to untack and hose them off after their ride. A little obstacle course was set up to practice guiding. They also spent a lot of time practicing their posting at the walk and the trot, and even got to trot over some poles. Before getting off, everyone did some stretches on their ponies, and thought of some new ways to ride (like backwards and criss-crossed😂). When everything was done at the barn it was up to the house to eat lunch in the air-conditioning and swimming in the pool, but not before a popsicle from the barn freezer.

Aniston and Quite a Roc showed in the High/Low Children’s/Adult Hunter and won their 2’6 Derby on Saturday (1st, 2nd, three 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th). Always a fun time at a Horse Shows in the Park, LLC at The Grand Oaks Resort. Lots of ribbons and more importantly lots of great rides from these girls! Big congratulations to Marlena who showed for the first time since her knee injury in October, she has worked so hard both on and off the horse to get here and we are so proud of her. Marlena and Blanket Approval changed speeds and put out beautiful hacks in Pleasure Horse/Pony (3rd, three 4th, 5th, 6th). Another sight for sore eyes in the ring this weekend was Nicole Hicks on Blugatti KSF and they took a 6th in the Derby on Saturday out of 16. Hillcrest Blue Bandit enjoyed a relaxing Saturday getting turned out and being barebacked to deliver lunch to Mrs. Debbie, but he and Angeline were ready to work on Sunday in Walk/Trot 10& over, and Walk/Trot Crossrails 10& over (3rd, 4th, two 5th, three 6th). Ila and Samster the Hamster rode beautifully together and had wonderful trips in Walk/Trot Crossrails 10& over and took home a Grand Champion (two 1st, 2nd, 3rd, two 5th, 6th). Ariana and Virginia Blue continued to grace the Walk/Trot Crossrails 9& under together (2nd, four 3rd, two 5th, 6th). Maiya was back for her second show on Blanket Approval in Crossrail Jumpers, and unfortunately for her parents we think she caught the horse show bug. We are so excited to see Maiya grow and move up in her riding(4th, three 6th). Sofie and Surprise Party showed in the 2ft Jumpers as well as Short Stirrup, it’s harder than you might think to switch disciplines that quickly and Sofie did it effortlessly (2nd, two 3rd, four 4th, 5th). Avri and Girl on Fire showed in the 2’9ft jumpers for the first time and if the trips they had give us a look into the future we can’t wait for it to come (two 2nd, three 3rd, 5th). Aniston Middleton and Quite A Roc are coming so far and did so well together in the Low Childrens 2’6ft Hunters, and took 3rd out of 16 in the Derby on Saturday (1st, 3rd, two 4th, two 5th). Tillie and Culture Icon had a great weekend taking all 2nd’s and 3rd’s in the Thoroughbred Hunters 2’3/2’6 ft. A new four-legged face made an appearance for Mardebri Manor. Alexa showed Caszillino in the 0.60 Jumpers on Saturday where they took Grand Champion and 2’3ft Jumpers on Sunday, which was also Alexa’s first time showing at this height. These two are still getting to know each other, but soon we are sure they’ll be winning everything (two 1st, two 4th). As always Mardebri is so proud of everyone who showed this weekend!

Things your riding instructor wants you to know:
1. This sport is hard. You don't get to bypass the hard…..every good rider has gone through it. You make progress, then you don't, and then you make progress again. Your riding instructor can coach you through it, but they cannot make it easy.

2. You're going to ride horses you don't want to ride. If you're teachable, you will learn from every horse you ride. Each horse in the barn can teach you if you let them. IF YOU LET THEM. Which leads me to…

3. You MUST be teachable to succeed in this sport. You must be teachable to succeed at anything, but that is another conversation. Being teachable often means going back to basics time and time and time again. If you find basics boring, then your not looking at them as an opportunity to learn. Which brings me to…..

4. This sport is a COMMITMENT. Read that, then read it again. Every sport is a commitment, but in this sport your teammate weighs 1200 lbs and speaks a different language. Good riders don't get good by riding every once in awhile….they improve because they make riding a priority and give themsevles opportunity to practice.

5. EVERY RIDE IS AN OPPORTUNITY. Even the walk ones. Even the hard ones. Every. Single. Ride. Remember when you just wished someone would lead you around on a horse? Find the happiness in just being able to RIDE. If you make every ride about what your AREN'T doing, you take the fun out of the experience for yourself, your horse, and your instructor. Just enjoy the process. Which brings me to...

6. Riding should be fun. It is work. and work isn't always fun.....but if you (or your rider) are consistently choosing other activities or find yourself not looking forward to lessons, it's time to take a break. The horses already know you don't want to be here, and you set yourself up for failure if you are already dreading the lesson before you get here.

7. You'll learn more about horses from the ground than you ever will while riding. That's why ground lessons are important, too. If you're skipping ground lessons (or the part of your lesson that takes place on the ground), you're missing out on the most important parts of the lesson. You spend far more time on the ground with horses than you do in the saddle.

8. Ask questions and communicate. If you're wondering why your coach is having you ride a particular horse or do an exercise, ask them. Then listen to their answer and refer to #3 above.

9. We are human beings. We make decisions (some of them life and death ones) every day. We balance learning for students with workloads for horses and carry the bulk of this business on our shoulders. A little courtesy goes a long way.

Of all the sports your child will try through their school years, riding is one of 3 that they may continue regularly as adults (golf and skiing are the others). People who coach riding spend the better part of their free time and much of their disposable income trying to improve their own riding and caring for the horses who help teach your child. They love this sport and teaching others…..but they all have their limits. Not all good riders are good coaches, but all good coaches will tell you that the process to get good is not an easy one.

*thank you to whoever wrote this! Not my words, but certainly a shared sentiment!

We could not have asked for a better outcome for the first Horse Shows in the Park, LLC at The Grand Oaks Resort of the year. Alexa and Peaches N Cream showed for the first time in the 2ft Jumpers, as well as Sofie and Surprise Party who took home Grand Champion on Sunday. Angeline and Hillcrest Blue Bandit worked so well together in Walk/Trot 10 & over, and Angeline got to navigate a course in the ring for the first time for her Walk/Trot Ground Poles. Tillie and Culture Icon ended the weekend with beautiful trips in the 2’3, 2‘6 Thoroughbred Equitation Over Fences taking a 1st and 2nd and 2nd in the flat. This was also their first time showing in the covered arena. Avri has grown so much in her riding since the last time she shown. Her and her mare Girl On Fire took all 1st and 2nd in every single trip in the 2’6 jumpers. Presley and Virginia Blue were back in the ring for Walk/Trot 9 & under, as well as Walk/Trot Crossrails 9 & under and took home a Reserve Champion. Mardebri is so proud of everyone who showed this past weekend

A fun but chilly weekend over at Canter Down Farms. Anna and Atlas showed together for the first time but looked like they had done this a million times together before. A big congratulations to Angeline for her first horse show ever on Hillcrest Blue Bandit, we can not wait to see Angeline continue to grow and show more. Also tackling her first horse show is Ekin on Surprise me, these two were beautiful not only in their walk trot class but also over the cross rails. Ariana and her pony Virginia Blue floated over the cross rails and looked amazing while doing it. Tillie and her four year old, Culture Icon, had a little bump on schooling day but ended the weekend with beautiful trips in the 2’3 hunters. These two have grown so much together already and their journey is just getting started. Mardebri Manor is so proud of everyone who showed this weekend and can not wait to see them in the ring again.

Big Congratulations to Avri Justice and her mare Girl on Fire for first place in Child/ Adult 2'6 jumper division. As well as being Horse Shows in the Park, LLC jumper of the year. These two really were girls on fire this year and we can not wait to see them flying over the jumps next year!

Who says you need horses to have a horse show?😂 not only were the horses bunkered down for hurricane Nicole, the girls were too. After spending some one on one time with their ponies grazing them, they decided it was their turn to get some energy out.

Extremely proud of Lila Spires ( Samantha Spires )and her mare, Blugatti KSF (4 yr old), placing first in a low children’s hunter class at The Grand Oaks Resort’s Horse Shows in the Park, LLC. These two have grown so much in the past year and we cannot wait to see everything they will accomplish in the future.
