A fun day out for a hike or visit to the lake or even just hanging around your own property can quickly turn into a painful event for your pet if they encounter foxtails.
These invasive weeds can easily get stuck in your pet’s paws, nose, ears, eyes, and often times also in their mouth or throat as your pet grooms themselves. Not only are foxtails painful but they can cause abscesses and infection the longer they remain on/in your pet.
This was a recent case we saw where a dog was brought in because of a lump on the side of its face. Upon examination we found a foxtail in its mouth and as we began to clean and probe deeper into that lump, that had developed from the inside of the mouth outward, we found not 1 but 12 foxtails! This was not a case of a careless owner - this can truly happen to anyone.
If your pet has access to areas that might contain foxtails we highly recommend that you check them head to toe regularly for not only the foxtails themselves but also any new lumps or bumps as these can develop from the foxtails burrowing in.
Since we have been seeing a very high volume of foxtail cases lately, we are trying our best to save aside a few appointment times each day and also allowing for drop off appointments so we can help your pets be free from those nasty foxtails as quickly as possible! If you find your pet licking their feet excessively, shaking their head, sneezing, not eating well or any other unusual symptoms- please give us a call and we will do our best to fit them in.
