Morlen Kennels

Morlen Kennels Grooming and Boarding services in Loris, SC. This led to a pair of clippers in hand and a leap into the world of grooming.

In 2018, Morlen Kennels was born out of a simple necessity: the need for quality grooming for our beloved Bernedoodles. As breeders, we, Michael Allen and Justin Morgan, encountered a challenge — the lack of local grooming services for our growing family of Poodles. Our journey took a significant turn when we built a facility in 2021, initially meant to house our breeding dogs. Recognizing a gap i

n the market for boarding and grooming, especially for larger breeds, we opened our doors to the public. The community’s response was overwhelming, and by 2023, we pivoted entirely to specialize in these services. Morlen, a blend of our founders’ surnames, embodies a partnership dedicated to the care of dogs, big and small. Though Justin pursued other interests as our path led away from breeding, the ethos of Morlen Kennels remains. Navigating the intricacies of grooming and boarding, we learned on our feet, facing every challenge head-on. A pivotal moment was our collaboration with Christy from Dawghouse Delight. Her expertise, alongside her trusted groomers and loyal clients, propelled Morlen Kennels into a new chapter. Today, Morlen Kennels stands as a testament to dedication, learning, and the love of dogs. Owned and led by Michael Allen, we’re proud to offer a haven for grooming and boarding, with a focus on safety, service, and the care of breeds often overlooked by others.

From a local gardener:

This tick has been on display for us to show people for a while. After months in a sealed container without any additional feeding, she laid eggs. This demonstrates how long a tick can remain dormant and how many eggs one female can lay. Remember, ticks become active again in the fall, so continue with preventive measures.

If you encounter a small pile of jelly-like balls in your garden, act immediately! These are tick eggs and they're set to hatch soon.

Either set them on fire or destroy them by soaking in isopropyl alcohol. Be sure to wear gloves if you handle the nest, as it contains hundreds of tick eggs that will hatch in a few weeks. I believe it's important to share this post because tick bites can be dangerous.

Stay safe and informed to protect yourself and your garden from these tiny but dangerous creatures!

[NOTE: This photo is just picture of a pond in the summer. NOT a picture of a pond with the toxin.] Cyanobacteria can have many different looks, including not being visible at all. Link to Kentucky Division of Water for more photos and information: https://eec.ky.gov/Environmental-Protection/Water/Monitor/Pages/HABS.aspx #:~:text=Harmful%20Algal%20Blooms%20Division%20of%20Water&text=A%20harmful%20algal%20bloom%2C%20or,skin%20in%20animals%20or%20humans.
"Death follows minutes to hours after exposure to a small amount of this toxin." As the weather gets hotter, ponds can start to have "algae blooms." The water itself can look like pea soup, or like green paint is spread on the surface of the water. Sometimes it is not visible at all. Some of these blooms are cyanobacteria, which can produce potent toxins. Dogs are exposed when they wade in the water and either drink the water directly, or lick it off themselves when they come out. There is no antidote; treatment is supportive and many dogs don't survive. If you believe your dog has been exposed, bathe him immediately. If he has any symptoms, bring him right in to a veterinarian. See comments for more information about signs and treatment. (Most ponds that look like this are not dangerous, but it is not possible to tell which ones are toxic and which ones aren't except by having the water tested; If in doubt, keep pets out.) Edited to add links to more pond phots.
