Please be patient with me as I am extremely busy hosting a womans workshop at my church today and have church tomorrow along with trying to get our garden in. Lots of msgs this week about treating splayed leg. I'm so happy to help. Splayed leg is an easy fix. It's usually caused by a spike in temperature in the incubator but not always. It's best treated directly after pulling from the incubator. Make sure you have a nonslip surface in your incubator and in the container you are keeping them in. If one or both legs are still out to the side or the back this post is for you. Usually you leave bands on as long as the chick is old when treated. So 3 days leave on for 3 days. One day old leave on for 24 hrs. Exc. If the chick is older than a week old at beginning of treatment you may need to leave on for several weeks. This also goes for curled toes but that's a different post. There are many different ways to go about splayed legs however, I have found with silkies having fuzzy legs and being so tiny these work best. The clear 1/2 inch ouchless rubber bands from the dollar store. They are soft, don't pull the fuzz, they are firm enough to contain the legs and still have enough give your baby isn't going to trip and fall more than a few times before being able to master the feeling of walking with it. It's not just important to treat early because that's when it's the quickest to improve, but also because your baby doesn't need a ton of food or water and if it's dramatic about a brace they won't starve while it's getting corrected because they are still surviving on some yolk sack inside their body. Also, they haven't ever walked about before and every feeling is new. The bands aren't so strange and are accepted much easier by them if put on during their first steps in their new enclosure. Simply tie 2 of the rubber bands together so there is a knot in the center. Slip a loop over each foot. That's all!

New kids on the block ♥️How I get my hatchlings eating and used to my ✋️ hands. Little crumble, little mash, little scrambled eggs. Hand fed. Don't mind the one with the painters tape shoe. Just a little curled big toe that didn't work itself out. It comes off tomorrow ♥️😊

I can be a bit extra lol 😆 5 chicks going out. 2- 72 hr heat packs, fruit jello, 2hydrogel, 3 crumble and a fuzzy destuffed animal glued to the floor to snuggle in their upgraded box.♥️😑 safe travels my lovies

The feeling you get when babies are hatching but you have been at work all day and your just getting home about to walk in to meet them for the first time and your so excited all you can do is make a really really long run on sentence post to your people who know exactly how you feel 👌😄 here I go!!

What I'm doing when I'm not tending chickens. Where any leftover funds go. My rescue draft horses. Dentist day 😬 foot day... you can thank Jack and arlo for your beautiful birds. I wouldn't sell anything if they weren't so expensive 🥵🤣 included some pix of my boys at time of rescue and after I rehabbed them. 3 of the 6 horses saved the last 2 yrs.
