February is Black History Month. It is important and necessary to highlight the contributions and achievements of African American leaders in veterinary medicine. Dr. Jane Hinton (photo 1) and Dr. Alfreda Johnson Webb (photo 2) were the first African American women to become veterinarians in the United States. Both women led their communities in the field and became teachers to the following generation of veterinarians.

We are honored and grateful to see increasing diversity in the field of veterinary medicine, allowing for greater education and advocacy for pets in need and a varying approach to patient care.
