Let’s talk money. And more specifically, your money. Do you know how much money you made-or-didn’t make, last year? Do you know how much your hay has gone up in the best ten years? For a while I didn’t, and it nearly crushed my large operation. We need to understand our Profit/Loss! Check out our FREE excel spreadsheet at NALBB.org. I’ve plugged in the formulas that allow you to know your numbers. I’ve added the expense names, you plug in the dollar amount. Add your boarding or lesson numbers and see your profit -or-loss at the bottom. You can then increase your fees on the form to get yourself financially whole! Works the same for lesson barns!

BTW-in 15 years my hay has gone up 235%; manure removal 65%; salaries 295%

Do you know that we have an excellent advocate for the US horse industry that is based in Washington, DC? It is called the American Horse Council and the AHC “is the only national association exclusively representing every segment of the equine industry in Washington, DC. We are deeply committed to serving the needs of our members and fulfilling our mission of advocating for the equine industry”.

They have recently published their report on the entire US equine industry. The report is very informative and shows the economic powerhouse the equine industry is the the US economy.

Good Morning. NALBB was started because of the many changes we have been seeing in the Lesson and Boarding Barn industry. A troubling new theme is the closings of the great places across the country. As closings continue we need to ask ourselves: where will the next generation of riders come from? Where will they be able to keep their horses? Who will buy all of the cool horse gear if we start losing more riders? What will happen to an industry that produces almost 77 BILLION dollars for the US GDP? Join NALBB and help us work to find solutions.

Here are two great ones that just annouced that they are closing.

The Potomac Horse Center-located in North Potomac, Maryland PHC has been the home to a great riding school since the late 1950s. Unable to to come to terms with their current landlord this wonderful school is being forced to close.

The Kent Horse Trials-located in Kent, Connecticut the Kent Horse trials have been in operation since 1980. Citing the expense, challenge to find volunteers and improvements needed to the course the Kent Horse Trials has decided to close.

We are delighted to announce the official opening of the The National Association of Lesson and Boarding Barns-a business association dedicated to the Lesson and Boarding Barn industry. The website can be found at NALBB.org. We are a brand new business association with the aspirations of doing great things for our changing industry. Our mission is to support the lesson and boarding barn industry by providing a central place for members to network, obtain needed resources and to promote their individual businesses and our industry.
