Well, it feels hot 🥵 outside, but the skunks 🦨 are more active like it is fall. If you have a dog, keeping a bottle of Skunk Odor Remover on hand can be helpful! A few tips:
1) Make sure you put the Skunk Odor Remover on your dog BEFORE any water. The skunk spray is oily, and water will not remove it. In fact, water first will release the thiols and cause your dog to stink worse!
2) You want to avoid getting Skunk Odor Remover in the eyes. Often, dogs get spayed on the head; you can soak a cloth in the skunk odor remover and then gently blot to avoid the eyes.
3) After applying it for a few minutes, you can shampoo your dog with dog shampoo. You can also use this product on towels to get the odors off.
4) Skunk spray is quite caustic and can cause damage to the eyes. If you think your dog has been sprayed in the eyes, please consult with your vet.
5) Skunks like to go underneath things. Limit access under wood piles, porches, etc, to reduce your chances of your dog having a skunk-y interaction.
Which local dog will be the most fluent? Guess what? We will soon find out! FluentPet kits are on the way to Pet Pangaea. What I loved is that the kits we ordered come with an online training class for the humans, along with live sessions. So, you will be successful in teaching your dog. You won’t have to wonder what your dog is saying to you, once they learn the buttons. We will also organize some local meetings of FluentPet parents for sharing of tips!

We have some great vets here in town, but something always seems to happen on the weekends or late at night, and you need to find emergency care for your pet. Well, Mosaic Animal Emergency and Specialty is opening tomorrow, according to their page. They are in Santa Fe and a little closer than the emergency care that has been available to us recently. Please see their page for details. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61561087977464

Do you have room in your heart and home for Lucy? Her Foster Mom sent us this information on Lucy: "Meet Lucy! She is an incredibly loving, fun, affectionate young girl. She loves to be around her foster mom as much as possible and loves to be held and cuddled. She does well with adults and children and seems to do well with other dogs as long as her resources are not threatened. She does not seem to be triggered by cats. Please contact Kathy Buhl at Jemez Valley Animal Amigos for more information at 303-324-4819."

Community safety alert: Positive rabies test in a bat. Please read the article and check out the NMDOH website linked in the article. This is a great time to double-check your pet's vaccination status, too.
No known human contact with the bat has been reported, but we advise anyone who touched or had contact with any bat near the Cottonwood Picnic Area in early July to contact their healthcare provider or New Mexico Department of Health promptly.

Happy birthday to CCO Crescent! Well, her birthday was on Aug 2nd, but she was busy, so she just held a small birthday celebration in the backyard with a few friends today. She shared one of our Bubba Rose birthday cakes (of course, the Princess one) with her friends. She wanted to remind all the pet parents- Even though client services is closed on Mondays, your pets can still party like it is their birthday. If you order online at our website (link in the bio and below in comments), your pets’ selections arrive at your door with our home delivery service.

Here are some photos from last week’s Downtown Dogs! Thanks for coming. I am in NC picking up my daughter from her summer music program, but Downtown Dogs will still meet tomorrow, Saturday, at 10:30 am as usual. Everyone is invited! This weekly walking group meets near the stage at Ashley Pond. I won’t be there, but the regulars know the route. Get started without CCO and Chief Naughty Officer Crescent and I. I gave Mary Jo (Scott and Becky’s Mom- I know, human names are hard) some woofers to give out after the walk. So, yes, of course! Your deserving puppers will get their apres-walk treat this week, too. 🐶😋

Two once-in-a-lifetime canines were the inspiration for Pet Pangaea — the hub of all things pet-related in Los Alamos County. Former Chief Canine Officers Hana and Jasper served from 2005 until 2009 and 2012, respectively. Although they have both crossed the rainbow bridge to that great dog store in the sky, their passion for great toys, food, treats, chews, grooming products and much more still inspires the daily operations at Pet Pangaea.
Like her former canine product-testers, store owner Cyndi Wells is dedicated to bringing Los Alamos and its surrounding communities the very best the pet world has to offer. From dogs and cats to reptiles, small animals, birds, fish, and even horses and poultry, Cyndi and her staff of dedicated Pet Specialists work tirelessly to find and stock a wide variety of quality supplies to meet the needs of all types of pets and pet owners.
Cyndi opened Pet Pangaea in 2005 after the only existing pet store in the county closed its doors, and she grew weary of making the hour-long trek to Santa Fe to buy dog food. (Pet Pangaea LLC is not in any way related to the store that was in Los Alamos up until 2004.) Knowing that the Los Alamos community deserved a place to buy quality supplies at fair prices, Cyndi began the process of making her vision a reality.
She planned the store from the perspective of what would make her happy as a customer, and the result is a store that not only serves as a place for the citizens of Los Alamos County to purchase their pet supplies, but is also a hub of the local pet community, hosting regular events in support of the local animal shelter, pony club, and other animal-related organizations.
As a Ph.D. chemist and former Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) employee, Cyndi is especially interested in the field of pet nutrition, and enjoys taking a good, hard look at the ingredients that go into any bag of food Pet Pangaea stocks. She served on Mountain Canine Corps, a local search and rescue organization, and on the board of Los Alamos Friends of the Shelter. And as if all that wasn’t enough, she’s also an avid triathlete and founding member of the Triatomics Multisport Club.
Cyndi continued to work at LANL until 2008, working over 100 hours a week between LANL and the store for 3 years, so she is, obviously, not sane. But, if you see her in the store, don't worry. She is friendly and has never bitten. Pet Pangaea LLC also employs a great crew of friendly folks, eager to help you and your pet in any way we can.
