Team VDE went to the SFP CDS Dressage show this weekend! Torie competed Dart at second level and Sophia competed Poncho at training level. All of our scores were above 60% with Sophia receiving a 66%. It was such a fun show and we are so proud of Poncho for behaving so well at his first dressage show. Thanks to HCM Dressage for adopting Poncho for the show!! 🌟🦄🪄

Summer camp spam!!! The summer seems to be flying by and we are already done with beginner camp!! We have had so much fun introducing the magic of horses to so many kids this summer - four weeks to go!!

Words matter. Deragotory self talk is not helpful. Generalizations don’t help you make changes.
Instead of “I’m sloppy” say “I lean forward and slip to the outside”.
Instead of “my horse is blocking me” say “his neck is bracey, we need to do a few flexions”
Instead of “I’m terrible at X” try saying “I’m currently working on X.”

Get specific!!!! Word things in a way that you can fix. If you are not sure, search…. Take inventory of your parts and figure out what the ACTUAL issue is. If something isn’t working, don’t get frustrated- get curious!

The tuneup…

Honestly, I cringe when someone says “I sent my horse to a trainer for a tuneup.”

Usually, they’re implying that the trainer will fix the broken parts the horse has and it’ll come home good as new. As if it was a car needing its spark plugs replaced or something. That’s not how it works. A sentient being isn’t fixed, they’re managed.

So I thought of a new way to describe the “tuneup”.

Think of it like detailing a car… If you send your car to the detailer, they will pull it all apart, clean it, scrub it, polish it and then put it back together. It’ll be as beautiful and clean again but it won’t last very long. The bigger the job, the more expensive it is because the labor takes time and skill.

If you send a brand new car that’s just a little dusty, you’ll get back a car that is damn near close to new looking again. If you send an old, beat up, paint chipping, ripped seats car, you’ll get back something better but it won’t be anything like the new car.

Horses are no different.

A “tuneup” on a well trained, well cared for horse is easy.

A tuneup on a sorry broke, pushy, spoiled horse, is going to be rough. And mostly rough on the horse because he has no good foundation to even clean up.

Do your horse a favor and get them educated. Spend time learning how to make them a nice “car” to drive. Keep the paint clean and waxed, keep the floors vacuumed, throw the trash away. Horses need their boundaries consistent. They need to have work that challenges them but also reinforces solid basics and mostly they need to be kept up, so they don’t fall apart.

“Bootcamp” for horses is rough on the animal and it can be avoided with consistency. Nothing wrong with an overhaul to get you going, but if they need regular “tuneups” perhaps you need to spend more time in the trainers barn. 😉

Yes, I said what I said 😆
