Our tasks for August hold steady for September. It's what I call "cruise control time" and definitely a time to feast your eyes on your bounty!

1) Feed & Fertilize
Your plants will keep producing blooms as good as the nutrition you put in your soil. You can try granulated fertilizers such as Dr. Earth Bud and Bloom Buster. Be sure to rake in the instructed amount and water in gently. Liquid fertilizers such as AgroThrive Fruit and Flower are an easy to "dilute and pour in" method for smaller areas. Be sure to slowly ramp up concentrations over the growing season and avoid fertilizer burn. Timing is key. Be sure to feed in the early morning when temperatures are around 68-72F, when stomas are open and ready for an uptake of feed.

2) Manage pests
Mother Nature tends to provide our garden with plenty of beneficial insects such as honeybees and ladybugs. However, the balance is rarely perfect and we find plenty of Leaf Miners, Aphids, Cucumber Beetles and Thrips amongst our blooms this time of year. We have an artillery of companion plants such as basil and mint to help deter pests, but that is usually not enough to battle off the "not so nice bugs."

3) Perennial planning
If you're up for some seed sowing, this is a great time to get perrenials sown. We pot them up in Fall and keep them sheltered to overwinter, planting them out in early Spring.

4) Finalize your plan for Fall corms & tubers (root stock)
This is a great time to secure your ranunculus, anemones, and peonies for Fall planting! Regardless if you are a home gardener or larger scale grower, Ednie Flower Bulb company has made it simple. Their anemone catalogue breaks down the different widely offered varieties and their suitable growing conditions and takes the guess work out of the selection process.

5) Keep harvesting your blooms!!!
As a general rule, we keep 25% of blooms on the plants for us to visually enjoy. We continue to harvest and keep our plants cut back so that they continue to produce.

Who would have ever thought we'd have 40 degree weather and hail in April? We just did...YESTERDAY!! Might we be reminded that we are ALWAYS at the mercy of Mother Nature :)

On the docket for April...

1. Dahlia planting
Check the weather forecast in preparation for dahlia planting. Weather in April can be turbulent. Ideal conditions for dahlias include lightly moistened soil and steady temperatures of 60F+. Don't forget... Rain poses a threat to unestablished dahlias. Tubers have thin skins like potatoes and are at higher risk of rot when up against wet sloppy soil. A dahlia plant that has formed green leaves indicates an established root system that is ready for watering.

2. Harvest, harvest, harvest!
You're probably knee deep in ranunculus and anemones blooms. As long as the weather stays cool, keep trimming those blooms to enjoy. In general, the more you harvest cut flowers, the more they will produce! Don't forget to harvest in the early AM when blooms are most hydrated.

3. Continue to sow batches of summer annuals
Focals: Zinnias and CosmosFiller: Orlaya, Celosia, Amaranth, Orach, Strawflower, Gomphrena, Orlaya

Flower Farmer Tip: If you're direct sowing, be sure to cover over with shade cloth or netting to prevent birds or other seed lovers from snatching up your loot!

4. Store unused seeds in a cool dark place
Why is it when we buy seeds, we feel like we've bought enough for an entire city?? A wonderful flower friend recommended storing seeds in clear plastic photo boxes. (BRILLIANT!) These boxes help to keep seeds organized and are easy to stow.

Alternative: You can even use ziplock bags and a shoebox! Viability of seeds tend to decline after a year of purchase. Some seeds can retain their viability longer than others with proper storage.
