Congratulations to Elvenstar for their purchase of Midnight Jazz! This little mare has dreamy movement, massive scope, and the sunniest disposition you can imagine. I'm excited to see her in the show ring and helping kids achieve their equine dreams. Thanks so much to Kaycee Bischoff at Elvenstar, to my talented working student Ashley Clark and my awesome pony pilot Hayden. The sky is the limit for Jazz!

A huge CONGRATULATIONS to Makenna and her family on their purchase of Souter! πŸŽ‰πŸ₯³πŸŽ
We were trusted with training Souter and finding the right home for him, and we couldn't be happier with this match. The sky is the limit for this pair, and it's just the best when things click this way. We appreciate the opportunity to play equine matchmaker, and we're just overjoyed when we see the connection happen.

What a fantastic show we had at The Paddock Riding Club last weekend! Team Phoenix pulled together and took 2 horses to their first show ever. Our show veteran Nite (as always) was brilliant with his young rider Hayden, and the two earned a 4th and a 1st in the 0.70m classes. Hayden's rides were both excellent, and the class she took first in was ridden perfectly. Huge congratulations to them! Hayden's hard work is paying off, and we're excited to see them compete at Nationals in Las Vegas in November.

Hayden also had the honor of showing our sweet pony mare Jazz in her first ever show. Hayden rode two lovely rounds (hunter and equitation crossrails), and Jazz showed she's a true competitor. Jazz is from the same herd as Nite (Oak Creek Wild Horses), and shows the same enthusiasm for jumping as he does in a package pretty enough for the local hunters. She'll be looking for a new address and a special home to call her own very soon. Inquire for details.

Souter is an imported off-track Thoroughbred in our sale program. He is progressing steadily and is jumping crossrails at the canter. He was very good at the show, with only a small bout of nerves that he easily worked out of. He didn't compete at this show, and we were thrilled to see that he was able to mind his manners 98% of the time. That other 2% will come along shortly...with Thoroughbreds, teaching them to self-regulate in stressful environments (like shows) is key. If I was in the market for a new OTTB for myself, this is the one I'd want! He'll be available soon, so send any questions our way.

Such a fantastic experience for all, and we appreciate everyone pitching in to make this a great experience for Hayden, Nite, Jazz, and Souter. As always, thanks to EquineClicks Photography, Inc. for the excellent photos and to K/A Productions for the lovely show. Thanks also to our sponsors Contact Saddles and Albion Saddlemakers Co. Ltd for their support, and we can't wait for Nite's new custom saddle to arrive!

They'll be competing at in November, and I'm SO excited for them both. Nite is (as far as I know) the first Oak Creek Wild Horse to go to the National Championships, and Hayden is just beginning to show the world her brilliant horsemanship. Dream team for sure! Huge thanks to for the wonderful picture of them at in May.

Happy horses and smiling humans = what it's all about. πŸ†πŸ’™πŸŽ
If you want to have success riding or training horses, everything you do has to be rooted in the fundamentals of safety, respect, and love. If you prioritize the safety of your horses and riders, you'll quickly realize that there's a lesson in every day, and that it's ok to go at the speed your learner (horse or human) needs rather than the speed of the show circuit. If you prioritize respect for the strength and intelligence of your horses and riders, you'll quiet the noise enough to focus on the subtleties of the conversation between horse and human. If you prioritize love, you'll be driven to do the hard things, to find the joy in every precious moment on and around horses, and to approach training from a place of gratitude for the opportunity to learn. Every day, every ride, every moment is a chance to lay another brick in the road you'll travel to success. Keep going.

It's not how you start, it's how you finish. 🐎
One of my favorite exercises to teach riders new to jumping is about the landing side of the jump. It's easy to get caught up in the anticipation of the takeoff: will my horse chip or take a long spot? Will she run out? Can I make the turn to the next fence? How's my pace?
Those kind of thoughts can push out everything that comes after your takeoff, and forgetting to finish is how you get in trouble. I like to have new riders jump a crossrail or small vertical facing the arena edge, no more than 4 canter strides away. In the time between their jump and the end of the arena, they have to focus on staying straight and performing a full halt. It's best to start this exercise at a trot before moving to a canter so the rider doesn't become too heavy-handed and pull the horse's mouth excessively. The real ask for the halt comes as soon as the rider feels the horse land after the jump. By lengthening your spine upwards, sitting deep in the seat, and creating an even steady pressure with the reins, you are building the foundation for clean landings on bigger jumps. This also works to improve horse and rider communication, as it shows both of them that to proceed they need to be on the same page.

Nite's year in review!πŸŽ‰πŸŽπŸ•°οΈ
Nite started last year jumping cavaletti, and used the experience running cross-country at the Copper Meadows Eventing Sun Series to become braver and bolder. He swiftly moved from the 2' division at Route 101/ETI Corral 101 to the .70, .80, and .90m jumpers at the West Palms Events A-show in April. In July, he got more practice at the K/A Productions Fun Under The Sun show, doing the .90 and 1.0m jumper classes. After walking in a parade with other Friends of Oak Creek Horses in Tehachapi, we relocated our stable and kicked training into high gear. We capped off the year at Desert International Horse Park, with the Desert Holiday show. Nite rocked the .90m, and we discovered that he does better when the fences are over 1.0m! He did his first 1.05m class, and just keeps getting better, stronger, faster, and smarter.
I couldn't be more proud of this wild stallion-turned-jumper pony extraordinaire. In a year, he has gone from trotting crossrails to winning ribbons in massive shows. This is why I love training horses. It's not one moment of success... it's a thousand moments that build over time to equal a triumph that just keeps on going.

Big show this week! Team Phoenix is heading to Desert International Horse Park in Thermal, CA to compete in Week 2 of the Desert Holiday series.

I'm also excited to announce that I am now officially riding for Albion England, makers of my favorite jump saddles! You can see how much Nite enjoyed our last little pre-show jump school in my beloved Albion Kontrol saddle. Can't wait to get him his new custom made-to-measure Albion saddle ASAP!

If you're going to be at Desert Holiday let me know and we can meet up. I have a few exciting horses in the pipeline, so if you're in the market for an amateur jumper, equitation horse, or pony we should definitely talk. See you in the desert!

Just in time for the holidays: Mojave, the OTTB who never EVER wants to jump! πŸ˜‚
12yo 15.3hh chestnut gelding w/ Birdcatcher spots!
We've had Mojave since he stopped racing at Golden Gate Fields nearly 7 years ago. Mojave was a long & slow rehab/restart. He finally opened up and accepted kindness and love, & I'm not exaggerating when I say that he is now the horse he was meant to be: a thoroughly sweet boy who looks & acts like a QH with a TB pedigree!
So if Mojave is so good & has wonderful lead changes, great movement off the leg, & a soft mouth why on Earth would you sell him, you might wonder. Mojave thinks jumping is about as fun as a root canal without Novocaine, & we jump. Since we love this dude, he needs to find a home where no one will make him leave the ground.
Ok, so what would Mojave excel at? Dressage, Western dressage, barrel racing, pole bending, even reining, you name it...Mojave looks fabulous in Western tack, I've cantered him through the barrel pattern casually, & he has an excellent ability to regulate his speed at any gait. He is a kick ride until he's sure you really want to gallop, & then you'll leave everyone in your dust. He's also on the lazier side & doesn't need to work every day to stay sane. We ride him every other day & turnout or lunge in between & he's totally happy with that. He goes equally well in a double-jointed snaffle bit as he does in a hackmore.
Disclaimers: Mojave is not a typical "husband horse" or bombproof. He is not a deadhead lesson horse. He likes a challenge, learns well, & has light maintenance needs.
Looking for the best possible home. Sale, lease or lease-to-purchase considered. Mid-high four figures sale. Located in Lakeview Terrace, Los Angeles California. JC name: Rogue Status

Not everyone who gets a pony from a backyard barn as a training project ends up with the most incredible horse imaginable. I am that exceedingly lucky person. Nite is that insanely talented horse. β˜€οΈ
After my vet made the chance discovery that Nite had a microchip, I connected with one of his prior owners, Raeann James. She told me he was from the herd of wild horses near Tehachapi, California, that are known as the Oak Creek Horses, or Oakies. They are believed to be descended from Morgan horses that belonged to local ranchers in the 1800s. Nowadays, there is a herd ranging from 80-100 individuals managed by Diana Palmer and a few smaller, unmanaged bands just a short ways away. The Dunn family runs Broken Arrow Ranch and runs cattle on land that overlaps with one of the bands of Oakies. Turns out that with the help of Facebook and internet detective work, I was able to determine that Nite was caught from the wild on February 18, 2018. He was stopping the Dunns from collecting their cattle, who he had decided were HIS herd after he was kicked out of his former band. Young stallions either win some mares or are forced out, but Nite adapted and took up with the cows! πŸ˜‚
At any rate, I now know the origin story of my brave, fierce, opinionated, sweet, and talented Super Pony. He has stepped from the harsh life on the range into the A-circuit show ring like it's easy as pie... because for him, it is. Huge thanks to Brandie Dunn and Lalita Ragoobar-Share for the wonderful photos of Nite when he was still in the wild, and to everyone who helped me fill in the gaps in his story. I was right to name him Midnight Sun - he is the rarest of the rare, a thing one can only hope to glimpse during our short time on Earth. If you look closely at one of the pics with him and the cows, you can see from his shadow that he really is a unicorn. πŸ¦„πŸ’™

Now Available in Los Angeles: Fantastic lesson, family or trail pony with potential for the show ring!

Lyrical "Lyra" is an 11 yr old, 13.1hh Morgan mare. Started late through no fault of her own, and very safe and sweet. Will tote around a beginner walk/trot kid, or w/t/c and jump with a more advanced rider. Floaty mover with comfortable gaits, awesome with kids, loves trail rides. Could be very cute in the local hunters with some polishing.

Barefoot, not mareish, easy in the barn. Great opportunity for a kid on a budget looking to make up a show pony, or would be an asset to a lesson program.
