Sometimes it take up to ten minutes to move ten feet when you are in a therapy dog class. Everyone wants to learn about the dogs and what they are doing. When we explain they are learning about meeting strangers and encountering distractions so they can handle the stress and excitement of being a therapy dog, people are happy to help by petting the dogs. Small children, strollers, a wheel chair, fountains, slippery shiny floors, stores, glass elevators and heeling on stairs is all part of the day for a working therapy dog. And they loved it today. Great class of students!

February HDOC Members meeting is in the books. THANK YOU members who attended.

A HUGE THANK YOU Allen Lenning for braving the LA traffic from the OC to come speak at out February meeting. Allen brought his newest dog Malia. Malia would be his second dog training as a human remains dog. His original dog Abby Normal has 15 confirmed finds, I previous thought it was 5 impressive.

Malia he referred to as a “used” dog. Malia was raised by an inmate in prison. From there she went into the FEMA program. Now I. Allen’s hands. He spoke, like many “rescues” of having to assure her she is not going anywhere. Then started her training expanding her “library” of scent.

Ended with a demonstration. A human femur was hidden, as ahe swung an out the container she barked, her single as some searches are conducted in i the dark. Seanf around circling and found the femur her reward was her pull toy. As one identified barking she circled out. A very impressive search as we know our park is full of scent her nose was for one scent and she altered.

All and all a great meeting that included a birthday Luna! We celebrated a birthday, LUNA owner Megan Desantis we had cookies, donuts and a variety of beverages.

Another interesting and informative meeting.

This is an X-ray of a dog’s bent front leg. See that tiny white spec? That’s a microchip! It has migrated down the leg....far from where it was inserted, between the dog’s shoulders. This is actually quite common.....

When lost pets are scanned, the entire body SHOULD be scanned to catch any that have migrated. But, as an owner, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY AT THEIR YEARLY VET EXAM, to ask for a quick scan to make sure that: (1) the chip is still working, (2) the location of the chip is good, and (3) that the chip info is correct.

Remember microchips save lives and reunite families with their pet.... just have it checked regularly!

A therapy dog class will be starting on Sunday, March 2. As a prerequisite the dog should have passed the CGC. This is not an obedience class, it is a class structured to learn what is required of therapy dogs and handlers and to work through distractions. If interested please contact Karen Saunders or leave a comment here. Smitty is my fifth therapy dog and he loves visiting people.

One of our members was warned by her vet to be very careful if you are feeding raw. There have been five deaths of dogs in Southern California due to bird flu that came from raw food/milk. Photo of Smitty added for attention, he eats dry kibble with yoghurt. Thank you Angie for the photo.
