It will never cease to amaze me how smart our dogs are. Dogs think, they problem solve, and it can be argued that they affect our behavior as much as we affect theirs.

One of my favorite things about teaching dogs is the time I get to watch the wheels turn in their head as they make connections and try out different behaviors.

This is also why clicker training is so cool to me. If you really think about it, your dog has a much bigger burden in the learning equation. We say something like “sit” or let’s be honest, it’s more like “sit sit sit” and then your dog tries out a bunch of things: barking, jumping, pawing, and then bingo! they try sitting. We give them their reward and try again. Your dog has to whittle away all of the other possibilities and make the connection that our word “sit” means their body movement into a sitting position. They also have to connect that responding correctly to our word “sit” will earn them reinforcement.

There are a lot more moving parts to learning even the simplest behavior. Our dogs deserve respect, understanding, and a willingness to strive for clarity when we teach. Your dog is thinking, so let’s try to be the best teachers we can be.

Practice practice practice.

Okay, so muzzles can be a little tricky to fit and close properly. It is easy to fumble a lot when securing the straps, so grab a stuffed animal and practice a bit. Your dog should already be happily holding their nose in the muzzle for a good 15-20 seconds before you start practicing with the closures.

😍😍😍 seriously tho?!

Living with a dog who has behavioral issues can feel overwhelming.

It’s okay to take a break from working on it. It’s okay to miss a day. It’s okay if today you could only do the bare minimum.

Your mental health matters. Your dog will be fine.

This is one of my favorite quotes by Carl Sagan and if you haven’t read any of his books, I highly recommend that you do.

This quote rings true for me in so many ways. When it comes to living with and training a canine companion it is my responsibility to ask the right questions and be truthful about the answers.

I often tell the families I work with about struggling to get a loose leash with my dog. If I’m very honest with myself the loose leash is not my top priority and therefore hasn’t become consistent. Has it gotten better? Sure, but have I committed to it the way I need to? The honest answer is no.

In my not-so-great moments do I get frustrated with and judgmental of myself and Winter? Yeah. But most times I choose to live with the honest answer about where we are at and why we are there.

It’s understandable and absolutely okay to get frustrated with training progress, but we also need to stop and really ask ourselves the courageous questions and learn to accept the honest answers. I always hope that you are gentle with yourself and your dog.❤️‍🩹

I was in a pet store the other day when I overheard a conversation about how the owner couldn’t stand “these people with their clickers”.

That same day a person at the dog park was dragging positive reinforcement through the mud… “dogs will listen if they know who is boss”. I’ll admit that I cracked a smile when their dog wouldn’t come when called.

I truly believe that dominance and alpha-based training techniques would become a thing of the past if more people understood their dog’s capacity to learn and what effect dominance has on their well-being.

Does punishment work? Yeah, you bet it does. But what kind of relationship do you want? Do you want to suppress behavior or change behavior?
