CALL OF THE WILD. It was her curiosity that made me think about:

5 Fast Facts: Health Concerns in Savannah Cats.

1. It's important to screen Savannah kittens for PRA. Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) - it is caused by a recessive gene that destroys the cells of the retina which ultimately causes blindness.

2. Savannahs should be screened for a specific type of hemolytic anemia called erythrocyte pyruvate kinase deficiency (PK deficiency). Ultimately causing weakness and fatigue.

3. Heart conditions. A variety of breeds can be affected but Savannahs should be monitored for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy - is a disorder where the heart muscle becomes thickened and less efficient.

4. Male sterility. Direct offspring of servals and domestic cats can't reproduce. Male Savannah cats are sterile for at least 4 generations removed from the Serval ancestor.

5. Savannah's are a controversial breed and are illegal in Georgia, Hawaii, Nebraska, and Rhode Island. Delaware requires a permit.

It's rare for me to see a kitten that will gladly 'fetch', 'sit', and 'stay' but perhaps Dijon is just trying to be the model Savannah citizen
