Responsible dog owners provide for their dog's needs throughout their lives, including care, training, and companionship. Here are some tips for being a responsible dog owner:

✨ Provide care
Provide your dog with food, water, shelter, and regular grooming. Make sure their food is nutritious and balanced. Also, consider pet-proofing your home.
✨ Train your dog
Teach your dog polite manners and obedience. You can try taking obedience classes together.
✨ Socialize your dog
Expose your dog to different people and environments, such as parks, pet stores, and walks. Reward calm behavior around strangers and other dogs. (Make sure they are fully vaccinated)
✨ Keep your dog safe
Keep your dog leashed, especially in public, and don't let them stray. You should also consider microchipping your dog so you can be reunited if they get lost.
✨ Prioritize health
Schedule regular vet visits, even if your dog seems healthy because they can be stoic and hide signs of illness. Don't forget to prepare for emergencies. Consider getting pet insurance.

It's hot outside and that means the pavement is even hotter.
Walk your dogs in the early morning or late afternoon.
Instead of walking on cement, walk them on a grassy area as much as possible. Don't let their little toe beans get burnt.

Here are some tips for taking your dog on a boat this summer. 🚤⛵️

* Hydration
Be sure your dog has access to plenty of fresh water in a safe bowl. If you're in salt water, limit how much your dog drinks.
*Shade
Provide a shaded area for your dog to rest to protect them from the sun.
* Sunscreen
Apply dog-friendly sunscreen to your dog's skin, ears, and nose about 20 minutes before getting on the boat, and reapply throughout the day.
* Life jacket
Invest in a well-fitting life jacket designed for dogs to help keep them afloat and make it easier to retrieve them if they fall overboard.
* Swimming
Let your dog practice swimming in their life jacket before your trip. Even if your dog is a strong swimmer, you should still keep a close eye on them in the water.
* Comfort
Before boarding, take your dog for a walk to relieve themselves and give them time to get used to the boat and wearing their life jacket.
* Safety gear
Keep lures, bait, and hooks out of reach of your dog. You should also bring a leash in case you need to moor the boat at a busy marina or explore new places.

Several pathogens can cause respiratory disease in dogs, primarily transmitted through the air by respiratory droplets when dogs breathe, especially when they cough.

The signs to look for are listed below.
Initial therapy is prescribed based on likely respiratory pathogens and information about the coverage provided by various antibiotics. Dogs with more severe symptoms may need more aggressive treatment, such as hospitalization (with isolation) and provision of IV fluids, oxygen support, and nebulization.

If you notice any symptoms, come see us today.

05/31/2024

Foxtails can be dangerous to dogs because they can cause pain, infections, and even death. Foxtails are the seed heads of grass-like weeds with barbed structures that can get stuck in a dog's skin. The most common way dogs are exposed to foxtails is by inhaling a barbed seed while running through a field of foxtails with their mouth open. Inhaled seeds can get stuck in the lower airways of the lungs, which can cause pneumonia. Foxtails can also enter the body through the skin, for example, when a dog steps on or brushes a plant without realizing it.
If caught early they are relatively easy for your vet to remove. If left untreated they can cause infection, and in serious cases, can travel through the body to your pet's internal organs and even cause death.
How do I tell if my pet has a foxtail?
Signs of a foxtail in the nose or throat include:
Persistent sneezing, Snorting, Nasal discharge, Head shaking, Pawing at the head, Head tilting, and Gagging.
Other symptoms of a foxtail injury include:
Swelling around the paws
Licking an area more than usual
Squinting
Limping
Licking one area of the foot.

You should bring your pet in if you think they may have foxtails.
Walk-ins are welcome

It's snake season 🐍 Here are some things to know that may lessen your dog's chance of being bitten by a snake.
Avoid walking in long grassy areas and don't allow your pets to explore holes or dig under rocks, don't allow your pet to approach a snake even if it appears to be dead. Keep dogs on leads or a harness when outside walking or on adventures in the bush.
About 80% of dogs can survive a snake bite if they are treated right away. If left untreated, dogs are less likely to recover, possibly causing death.

Time is of the essence when it comes to snake bites and your pet.
If your dog is bitten by a rattlesnake you should take them to the nearest emergency vet with antivenom. Antivenom is the only treatment that can fight the effects of snake venom and is best administered within four hours of the bite.

This is considered an emergency and your pet will be seen right away for treatment.
