Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic condition that affects a dog's gastrointestinal (GI) tract, including the stomach and intestines. It's caused by a reaction to chronic irritation of the intestinal tract, which leads to an allergic-type response and inflammation.
This inflammation impairs the dog's ability to digest, absorb nutrients, and pass waste normally.
Symptoms of IBD can include:
diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, lethargy, fever, decreased appetite, weight loss, flatulence, and abdominal discomfort.
Symptoms can vary in severity and may be intermittent or chronic, lasting more than four weeks. If left untreated, IBD can lead to poor nutrient absorption, weight loss, abdominal distension, and swelling of the extremities. In extreme cases, it can cause blood clots, which can be fatal.
