Story relaxing.. halter and ba****ck.. this pony has been through it.. this moment has taken a long time but I couldn’t be more proud and happy for her. Meet your horse where they are, for us it has taken months to just walk through gates without riding, MONTHS! Groundwork and more groundwork, building connection and trust one day at a time.

Happy International Women’s Day gorgeous souls!

Sending love and heartfelt blessings to every single beautiful woman on Earth. Let us embrace those that are struggling, victims of war and violence, oppression and those rising up breaking through these chains. We see you and are here, sending love, we are one.

Together may we uplift and support one another.

May all women find the courage to live from the heart and to grace this world with life force balanced feminine energy.

Let us honor our elders and may our daughters know who they really are and their connection to mother earth and that all is sacred and that sisterhood is precious.

May we step into our true power and ancient wisdom, may we honor all the women that paved the path before us and may we know shine our light and magic for those that could not. That were burned and hunted for their divine feminine energy. May we all help heal this collective wound in our society. A wound we all feel, the fear to speak up, to be seen, to be heard, to take up space, to trust.

Let us be full of love , wild authentic and FREE!

A happy and incredibly blessed international women’s day!

Now the NRHA allowing horses to be drugged before competition .. WHY??

Now the NRHA allowing horses to be drugged before competition .. WHY??

I am overwhelmed, no, stunned at this latest move by one of horse sport’s major governing bodies. Have you been watching the news? The NRHA - National Reining Horse Association, a worldwide organization, has just okayed the use of Sedivet within thirty minutes of competition.

What does this tell us?

It finally, finally gives us permission to do whatever is necessary to win by showing man’s mastery over nature. Gone are the days of sparkling eyes and beautiful energy. The people who call the shots are saying that we want the heads down, the staggering steps, the dropped pen*ses dripping urine, the horses who crumple after a set of spins…

Sedivet, of course, is at its name hints. A sedative and preanaesthetic in horses, it is used to facilitate handling, examination and veterinary treatment. Now, it can add to its uses as a drug to mask a horse’s energy, lookiness, trainability and showability in competition. It is now a legal way to strip a horse of all his inherent qualities and dignity. A way to make him put his head down and take whatever we dish out.

Now we can show horses who are sore, without anyone being the wiser.

My newsfeed is showing a few top trainers openly calling, “What the actual hell, NRHA?” A very few. Mostly, it is filled with appalled horse(wo)men sharing videos that should have the owners and trainers disbarred from competing ever again, in my mind. This proof of drugging in competition is so revolting, I had to quickly turn off the first video I saw. If you are interested, you will have no trouble in finding the Sedivet story online.

In the name of balance, I have tried and tried to look up reasons why this would ever be considered ethical. Perhaps to mask a horse who is sore? To ensure the safety of someone who is overmounted? To make the sport more beautiful if we can’t see these horses openly resist in the warm-up pen? Nah, none of it makes any sense.

Drugging horses is not limited to reining, don’t kid yourselves. We see it in the lowest levels of 4H competition, never mind events that have prize money in the millions, or where little hunter ponies and pigtailed princesses are pitted against one another (on ponies that are insured for more than a modest house). One thing we know for certain. Anything beautiful will be turned to dreck the minute we involve a pile of money. And so it is, for the horses in sanctioned reining competition.

The crickets sounding forth from the industry pros—in all breeds and disciplines—is very telling. By their silence, it tells us that most of these pros are fine with drugging their horses.

I don’t know about you folks, but I am ashamed for my fellow man. I’ve watched these horses curl into themselves, lower and lower, in order to win. Bred smaller and smaller, started younger and younger, so often carrying overweight men… and now, this.

When will our abusing horses ever end?

Some love horseback riding, and some love horses. Some love both. However, if you had to choose between caring for the horse that can't be ridden any longer, or selling the horse for a younger model so you can ride, which would you choose?
Which do you think your horse hopes you choose?
Which do you think is more ethical?
A lot of people sell horses that they 'outgrow' etc and maybe the next owner is kind, and maybe even the owner after that. The PROBLEM is that the horse loses it's own continuity with equine friends, a sense of connection to land and home; it's family. ALSO the more this flipping happens, the less any one owner feels beholden to the idea of senior care. And senior care is needed by EVERY LIVING BEING. Normalizing the act of 'getting rid of' an animal because it no longer serves tells the next generation that it's ok, and the cycle continues. This is how old horses end up at auction, alone and undefended, equines that were once well trained and trusted to carry children, or accomplished athletes, or hard working partners in the field or on the road. No one stood by them in their hour of need.
It just seems that our species is capable of better treatment to another living being that 'we' have created and used. Every horse deserves a decent end to a life they did not choose, but may have tried their best at anyway, for as long as possible.
We step in for a few as we are able, but handing them over to a rescue ought not to be normalized either. There is not federal, state or local revenue supporting these efforts, each is headed by a slightly crazy horse person who saw a need and stepped up.
Our opinions are not secret, we live them every day. Sadly if more agreed with us, we would not need to be here.
Wouldn't it be great to normalize connection, value beyond just a skill, loyalty, and the beauty of caring for one who relies upon you? Because there is great beauty, and meaning, in standing beside another living being, one that you chose to bring into your life, and protect them for the rest of theirs.

Equine abuse is unfortunately so rampant in every discipline, this is not a Dressage bash.

But a cry and plea to do better! We must do better.

Having been immersed in the H/J world, AQHA, AHA showing and having worked for very well known “famous” trainers I swore OFF the show world in my early twenties because of the abuse I witnessed.

The sheer terror and heartbreak in some horses eyes I will never unsee.

I promised I would help as many horses as I could and teach people that there is a better way. An honest and amazing way. A dance and pure connection with your horse on the ground and undersaddle is possible.

And knowing there IS a better way tears your heart wide open when witnessing such behavior. I will not stand for it not will I support the facilities and shows that sweep these criminal behaviors under the rug.

I dove into Natural horsemanship (before it even had a name) 20 years ago and learned everything I could and apprenticed with some amazing natural horsemen. I started hosting clinics, working with wild mustangs and had my own ranch with a barn full of horses yet..I still never wanted to enter a show ring again.

Until my daughter wanted to show.

We started with a few small shows and then ended up moving my business to a show facility (not a first choice but so very few options in LA). While this was a good experience to stack up some ribbons, titles and work on personal goals for my daughter, I knew in my heart it was not where I was supposed to be.

After a few years of successful local A/B and IEA shows I called it quits, for real this time.

I was very hopeful that things had changed and evolved, and that California was more progressive than Tennessee but boy was I wrong. The amount of abuse I’ve witnessed, out in the open mind you, at show facilities and by well known local trainers is beyond disgusting and I will never be able to support these trainers or facilities. From severely malnourished horses, horses staying in stalls for weeks, horses being tied to one side with a bit and left in an arena only to fall, freak out and hurt themselves, horses drugged DAILY so that trainers “get the job done” and on and on…

My passion and drive comes from the heart of the horse, we have to do better. I will do better, our horses deserve it. 🙏

Moving forward I will be offering more Natural Horsemanship workshops. If you are curious about how to help your horse with certain issues, or if you want a more natural approach, or to go bitless or bridleless, I can help you. If you want your horse to stop pulling on you, jigging, disrespecting you on the ground, bolting, biting, spooking etc, I can help you!

I am offering virtual help for FREE through Feb.

A pack horse librarian delivering books in rural Kentucky in 1938. During the Great Depression, the Pack Horse Library Project was a Works Progress Administration (WPA) program in which the librarians, who were often called "book women" or "book ladies," delivered books to remote parts of Appalachia.

To share their inspiring stories with kids, we recommend "That Book Woman" for ages 4 to 8 (https://www.amightygirl.com/that-book-woman) and "Down Cut Shin Creek: The Pack Horse Librarians of Kentucky" for ages 8 and up (https://amzn.to/3N8WAtf) 🙂

For adult readers, there are also several excellent historical fiction novels about these determined librarians: "The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek" (https://amzn.to/47ZbdHz), its sequel "The Book Woman's Daughter" (https://amzn.to/3RqH6Cn), and "The Giver of Stars" (https://amzn.to/4a0Ym9A)
